Govt approves plan to strengthen ITBP posts along China border

New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) Government has approved a restructuring plan to strengthen border posts of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) which includes acquiring modern weaponry and specialised vehicles for the force which guards the country's icy frontiers with China.According to sources, the Finance Ministry has okayed the proposal sent by the Home Ministry which will allow the 45,000 personnel-strong force to recruit additional support staff.Home Minister P Chidambaram, during the 48th raising day of the ITBP on October 23 last year had said, "we are considering an ITBP restructuring plan. The plan includes measures to strengthen border posts." Under the new plan, the Home Minister said, the ITBP which guards 3,488 kilometres of the Sino-India border will have 15 new battalions, three recruit training centres, a counter insurgency and jungle warfare school and a high-altitude medical training centre."The force had submitted the restructuring proposal last year. With the expansion of the force, additional support staff is required," ITBP chief R K Bhatia told PTI.Under the new plan and keeping in mind the modernisation of the force, new training centres will be set up. With these centres, the ITBP will ensure quality training for its existing and newly recruited personnel, he said. The modernisation plan will also ensure additional computers, recovery vehicles, fibre-reinforced polymer huts, high-power snow cutters, deep-search mine metal detectors, hand grenade simulators and other devices for the ITBP troops.Sources said the force is also planning to undertake more Short Range Patrols (SRPs) as compared to the present Long Range Patrols (LRPs) along the borders.Under the modernisation plan, the ITBP will also provide its border posts with additional satellite phones, oxygen cylinders for personnel and more vehicles to enable them to keep a strict vigil along the border.ITBP posts are located at heights ranging from 9,000 to 18,500 feet. While 60 per cent of them have no road connectivity, almost 30 per cent are maintained by helicopters.Communication between patrol parties and the base locations and posts is often disrupted by bad weather. The Home Ministry has earlier sanctioned all terrain vehicles, solar power generating apparatus and two oxygen cylinders of 620 litres each for every border outpost. The troops have already been supplied with high-altitude clothing similar to the one provided to army troops who are stationed at Siachen glacier.Sources said the exact financial implications of the restructuring plan are being worked out.

Good initiative we should raise more ITBP personals and equip them with best equipments.

one question,
why govt did not brought the all paramilitary border force under same roof,I mean why there does not exist single paramilitary border force?

There should be an entire regiment in the main Army for the Tibetans like Gorkha Rifles, Naga Regiment, Sikh regiment etc. Recently we got the clearance for a Sikkim regiment and Arunachali regiments.

I hope ITBP is transformed into a specialized commando unit with a passive role of patrolling the borders.

Tibet is not a part of India so its cannot have its own regiment.

Can someone tell me what is the role of ITBP in case of a war with China?...will they fight with the Army like the BSF does.

Having a separate regiment for Tibetans would not be a good diplomatic move especially if they r not native to India (they r our welcome guests and will stay so).
