German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday announced plans for the army to lease Heron TP drones from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) rather than buy Predator B drones from US defense contractor General Atomics.

General Inspector Volker Wieker, head of the army, favors the Israeli drones which like the Predator B can be armed, government sources said, adding Germany planned to lease between three and five drones from 2018.

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are to be stationed in Israel and will cost about 580 million euros.

"This is about drones that can be armed, that will be standard in the future," von der Leyen told reporters. "It is important for the protection of soldiers," she said, adding she would provide more information once the contracts had been agreed.

Germany already has three earlier versions of the Heron reconnaissance drone which are deployed in Afghanistan. They are maintained by Airbus and cannot be armed.

The new drones are to serve as an interim measure until the EU has developed its own, von der Leyen said.

Germany, France, Italy and Spain plan to jointly develop a drone by 2025.

Interesting news. Israel is an advanced technological military power. It's arm industry produces very high tech/quality weapons, which are at par with the U.S/U.K/France and other western powers in terms of quality and performance. I always admire countries who strive to do their best and who are forward looking. Kudos to Israel. At least you make the Middle East proud.:D

Germany already uses Israeli unmanned drones in conflict, like this one

Israel has supplied 60.7 percent of the world's drones since 1985, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. As a result, Israel is the single greatest source of drone proliferation in the world. In second place is the United States, which accounts for 23.9 percent of global drone exports, followed by Canada at 6.4 percent, France at 1.6 percent, Austria at 1.4 percent, Italy at 1.1 percent, Germany at 1 percent and China at 0.9 percent.

Israeli Hermes 900 : In 2013 Israel exported $4.6 billion worth of military drones/UAVs to Britain India Germany Poland Netherlands Spain Ethiopia Nigeria and Uganda. In 2014 Israel became the Earth's largest exporter of drones. Since 2013, Israel has deployed more unmanned military drones over occupied territories and Gaza to reduce risk of Israeli soldier causalities.

The reason why they are going for the israelli drone is not because they are better or cheaper. American are really sensitive when it comes to technology, i bet if ther was no isseu between jews and arabs. All of the inventory of Arabs would be jewish:-), jews don't ask what are you going to do or they don't come and control ther weapon. They are more flexible...
