Gen.Kayani To Visit Russia This Month

So all that talk (and resultant war) of Russia coveting a warm water port through Pakistan was incorrect?

Perhaps a distinction between 'Soviet Russia' and 'Russia' would help us put things into a better perspective !

USSR was Russia with its vassal states; Russia still exists.

It's not bad to mend relations with any country and Russia can provide some technical help. Pakistan should welcome but not at the cost of giving them another playground. The area has been a play ground for world powers and the effects are visible. Make friends and allies but keep them far away from your border.

ISLAMABAD: Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani will walk into the corridors of the Kremlin this month, signalling the possibility of a marked shift in Pakistan-Russia ties marred by the Cold War rivalry.

Gen Kayani will become the first Pakistan Army chief to undertake a state visit to Moscow, though former military ruler Gen Parvez Musharraf did visit the Russian capital as the head of state in 2003.

Official sources confirmed to The Express Tribune that Gen Kayani would make the “historic trip” in the second week of September, marking the beginning of a new phase of otherwise troubled ties. He is expected to be given a warm welcome in Moscow, where he is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart and also President Vladimir Putin, sources added.

Gen Kayani was originally scheduled to visit the former superpower in early August but the trip was delayed due to a series of meetings with US officials as part of rapprochement between Islamabad and Washington.

What does this visit mean?

The army chief’s visit is being seen as a significant development as it comes just weeks before the Russian president undertakes his first-ever visit to Islamabad in early October.

“We have turned a new page in our relationship with Russia. It is a major shift,” said a senior official at the foreign ministry requesting anonymity.

A senior military official added that the two countries would push for greater military-to-military ties during Gen Kayani’s trip. “Ironically, Pakistan and Russia have more points of convergences than Pakistan does with the Americans,” he added.

The two countries are thought to share similar views on the Afghan endgame and have voiced concerns over US military presence in the war-torn country beyond 2014.

“The old Cold War rivals are going to be strategic partners. And this will change the entire strategic map of not only Pakistan but also of Afghanistan and Central Asia,” said defence analyst Maria Sultan.

Pakistan and Russia had remained bitter cold-war rivals in the 1980s when Islamabad joined the US-led alliance which defeated the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

However, relations have shown gradual improvement in recent years with two countries seeking to bury their bitter past.

Increased cooperation is believed to be a cause of concern for the United States. Washington, an official said, was not expecting Putin to visit Islamabad.

“You will not see that much bullying of Pakistan. It is going to have a sobering effect on Pak-US relations,” argued Maria.

However, some experts have warned that Afghanistan may become a new battleground for regional and international players in the wake of this realignment, fearing that if Pakistan-Russia ties are about “strategic advantages and disadvantages,” it will have negative implications for the Afghan endgame.

A 30-member strong Russian ministerial delegation will also visit Islamabad on September 9 for a joint inter-governmental commission meeting. The meeting is part of preparations for the upcoming visit by the Russian president to Pakistan.

Moscow has shown interest in investing in the expansion of Pakistan’s Steel Mills and has also singnalled its willingness to fund the Iran gas pipeline project, whose fate hangs in the balance because of US sanctions on Tehran.

Shift in policy?: Army chief to make

Better India Pakistan relations can be expected if both are friends of Russia.

Easier said than done, what Russia and Pakistan can do max at this moment of time is shake hands, exchange smiles and nothing else, allies/friends is a very long way to go

What can Pakistan offer to Russia ?? Seriously :hitwall:

Hi,

Nothing much---if you cannot see it----bu t a lot if you can---. Russia has lost all its allies in the middle east in a years time. Its power base has shrunk extremely fast---so fast that it did not even had the time to react to it either.

A road and a rail road to gwadar---is the end goal---a dream supposedly to come true for russia---. A naval and a merchant shipping port----oppurtunity to establish a mega oil refinery in that area---a steel mill upgradation---a mega rail road project---transportation of goods thru an intermediate route---and not the least---a major setback for the Obama policies----.

If this things happens and if it happens fast---real fast---the republicans are going to smash Obama's policies to kingdom come---.

Nothing more satisfying to see this loud mouth braggart fall to his knees in humiliation---it would be a tragic moment for the u s foreign policy and foreign office.

The balance of power projection would shift one more time.

Pakistan will ***** America in Afghanistan already and soon if US will try any **** against Pakistan. Pakistan already create another option to block NATO and US influence to allow Russia and China into Baluchistan. BIGGEST FAILURE of US POLICY!

Good point! I think Russia would be able to ease the tensions between Pakistan and India to a certain degree, but expecting it to mediate in disputes will be a non starter as this would require both Pakistan and India to agree. Considering India's stance on third party intervention, this will be a non starter.

It's politics and vested interests on both sides that prevent amicable resolutions to all existing disputes. And Russia cannot change this mindset.

Hi,

For that reason---I have always stated---humiliating pakistan was the worst possible thing that a sitting u s president could do.

Nothing would please me more to see his legacy in ruins and shambles for degrading my motherland as he did. A lots of blacks that I know---are great orators---but of very little substance---Obama a great orator and a man of substance---but he totally lost it when it came to pakistan. I hope and look forward for him to pay a heavy price for his bad judgement.
