I think our political people get nervous in front of western reporters and cameras. Local journalists respect them but westerners may be very offensive in terms of our own standard.

I have watched one or two interviews of our Hasina Bibi by a Lady journalist, American (?). She was not appeasing Hasina and was talking very straight. And this made Hasina very nervous. She was calling her, "Prime Minister", and she is used to hearing Honorable Prime Minister.

However, we have also to understand that western journalists are educated and taught to find out the truth and our journalists are taught to appease those from the higher stratum.

It’s a lot more simpler and sadder. Local journalists rise in prominence depending on the number of high profile connections and ‘confidants’ they have and the exclusive invites they receive. In case of India — a government like the one right now, there’s really no point right now talking to the opposition or taking a critical view on governance. Going after big corporates mean less ad money.

Don’t play nice and you just end up losing any access to exclusive high level commissions or sound bites on policy (etc etc) — making you irrelevant as a ‘journalist’. In print — people think there’s autonomy up top. Getting to the edit page and/or op-eds take time and your stuff has to be approved by the senior editor.

Major newspapers in india sadly engage in this nasty form of truly subservient self censorship which I find quite repulsive to be honest. There’s a few that are coming up now that’s bucking the trend. Guess we will see what happens.

Recently, India is appointing FM from the bureaucrats because politicians are half-educated and are unable to talk diplomatically with their counterparts and the bureaucrats joining him in a meeting get frustrated.

I have noticed that even Ambassadors may not fit into the chair of a FM. The present Indian FM is an exception. Ambassador is a diplomatic post but our Ambassadors are not fit to become a FM.
