Seriously dont know..what to say... Only you yourself can make the best judgement since you know tht person... Having met him...do u think he is mentally fit and alert? None of us, can tell u tht.....Personally i dont care much abt age... People over retirement age can be mentally and physically fit to perform their duties wel...so i dont think, age only should be much of an issue.. But as u said, tht recently hes gone through a major surgery....so am doubtful on this aspect...tht whether he is physically fit for this job or not..... But as i said, since you know tht person, only u can make the best judgement...have u ever seen him driving? Did u ever sit in the car, with him, driving?

But another question is tht...u said he is financially sound...so why does he need this job? Did u ask him tht? Because if he needed money for his family's survival...then there could be humanitarian consideration as well...before making final decision...but thts not the case.... So is it even worth it...to take the risk?

I didnt vote...because i dont know which option to choose.,before knowing the full details

Well personally I don't think he is mentally fit you know ........... I prefer people should retire when they are supposed to retire. I have seen him in the driving seat when I was a young kid ........... he has been a driver on and off.

But the problem is he insists he can and is fit for this job. I want to know what should I do........... should I refuse him based on his age and fitness? Or should I let him try and see what happens?

He Should be hired but not as a family driver but as a person who can drive, pay bills and can buy groceries for you.

Okay options have been edited can you vote now.

As I said you should hire him if you can but for different job means he may drive but alone to pay bills, visit market to bring groceries etc.

Look... If you are thinking..he is not fit for the job..ONLY because of his age...then i think its not a fair criteria... Many people are quite active, and alert, even above the retirement age...so as i said, age alone cant be a criteria to deny him job... Its his physical and mental alertness, tht matters more, than only age...and as i said, its u who can judge best...how can we tell you..if he is fit...when we have never seen or met him?

Maybe you should sit with him, and see him drive now...tht how well he drives now? Or as someone else pointed out..maybe u can hire him, not as a family driver, but as a driver who pays bills and does your grocery.....but then, only you can decide, knowing his mental and physical alertness...not anyone else...

At the risk of over-complicating the options, I would say that you should add another one:

Hiring him on probation / a trial period. If he doesn't perform up to your expectations, you can adjust his role or apologize and let him go (with some small financial reward for his troubles).
I think most people will have a very hard time picking an option without having at least spoken to him or having asked him to drive them around Islamabad for 5 mins to see how he does.

Agreed but since you feel for him and he ask for the job you should hire him for any role he may be have hope on you don't break it if you can afford him.

Problem is endurance since member know this person since long time and knows he drives well but can't say about his endurance due to advance age and medical condition.

In this condition he should be hired for commercial driving not for passengers since risk is high or you can hire him for different role other than driving. IF U CAN AFFORD.

No I am not at all a fan of his driving I want him to retire but he creates a scene every time he is asked to retire.
Then talk to him for other option believe me he need money which may be refused by his relatives.

I will appreciate if you could choose an option for me. And do it as someone who travels and uses roads and think about if he is safe to be on the road where you too may be travelling.

I am sure about his financial standing, believe me he is very sound financially. He is just crazy to be in the driving seat.

.
How old he is means age if you know and what type of medical condition he is suffering or operated for. My uncle is doctor I may ask him about that to advice you about he suggestions.
