Follow-on Kaveri K9+ & K10 Turbofan Jet Engine Projects worth $400 Million Await CCS Clearance

That's what I was thinking for a long time. The programme was shelved....what bloody shelved? People get IAS or IITs after 3-4 attempts. No matter what others say, we must take it to its conclusion...i.e complete it. And I swear If at all the funds are sanctioned or programme starts, we will hear US or UK or Russia have offered to make Engines in India or even they will say they will source the parts from inside.

in short : Kaveri programme was "never shelved" but haters gonna hate so what :coffee:

And also we have made 9 prototypes, right and some 10 LCAs (different type demonstrators). Why till now they have not fitted at least one of these with one engine and test it? These TDs are not going to be used in the battle, right? Why not put old Kaveri engines on TD1 and see what happens!!

This is layman's POV. Am no expert, but your view?

Indeed - Four years ago, when Indian aero-engineers walked into the Gromov Flight Research Institute in Moscow, they were shocked to see Chinese engineers there. The Indians had come to flight-test Kaveri, India's first indigenous jet engine. The Chinese, too, had come on a similar mission. And, the Indian engineers were worried whether the Chinese would beat them to it.

Kaveri, which was developed at the GTRE, successfully completed the sub-sonic test in Moscow by flying a giant Ilyushin-76 aircraft. The Chinese test was a failure. Four years later, however, it seems the Kaveri story is going to have a sad end, while the Chinese are making steady progress with their project.

The project always had funding issues right from the beginning - Engineers at GTRE didn't have enough funds to buy fuel for running the engine. On other other hand the Chinese were busy investing billions in the same!

The valuable experience and expertise gained through Kaveri will be crucial for K9+ and K10 projects - and this time I don't think funding will be a problem.

‘Our budget was stagnant for 5-6 yrs… This has been restored’, Avinash Chander, Director General,DRDO | The Indian Express

Meanwhile the Kaveri Marine Gas Turbine (KMGT), a recently developed derivative of the GTX-35VS Kaveri engine for ships is going fine with the Indian Navy -

Actually Scientists at DRDO/GTRE altogether deny that Kaveri was to power Tejas anytime soon - The reason why it was not even tested on the TD's.

Scientists deny that India had to buy GE engines to power Tejas, India's first light combat aircraft, because of the delay in Kaveri. "Nobody in the world puts an untested engine in an untested aircraft," says a scientist. "Even if Kaveri was ready by now, we would have put some other engine in Tejas. It is always like that. The first engines are always put in proven aircraft and untested aircraft are always powered with proven engines."

Jet engine lag

Congress deliberately scuttled the project by squeezing the funds ,I hope course correction is done under Modi.

It will be onboard UCAVs before a manned plane more than likely.

HI I wanted to ask a question regarding Rafale

In another thread in PAF section ; you were confident it will happen ( I am banned from that section 8-) )

Are you really sure about Rafale

The way I understand it, the Kaveri did not quite meet power requirements stipulated by the ADA as such it would not be allowed to be tested on a single engined aircraft. The Kaveri was tested on a multi engined a/c (Il-76):

Once the Kaveri is able to demonstrate it has met the specific criteria set forth by the ADA/IAF in both ground tests and flight tests it can be put on a single engined fighter (LCA), but not before that for inherent safety considerations.

If the Kaveri is to be re-explored as a jet engine for fighters it will most likely be fitted on a twin-engined fighter (IIRC GRTE are looking to procure their own Su-30MKI for this explicit reason) before progressing onto the LCA.

100% certain.
