First 'Silk Road' train arrives in Tehran from China

Tehran (AFP) - The first train to connect China and Iran arrived in Tehran on Monday loaded with Chinese goods, reviving the ancient Silk Road, the Iranian railway company said.

The train, carrying 32 containers of commercial products from eastern Zhejiang province, took 14 days to make the 9,500-kilometre (5,900-mile) journey through Kazakstan and Turkmenistan.

"The arrival of this train in less than 14 days is unprecedented," said the head of the Iranian railway company, Mohsen Pourseyed Aqayi.

"The revival of the Silk Road is crucial for the countries on its route," he said at a ceremony at Tehran's rail station attended by the ambassadors of China and Turkmenistan.

The journey was 30 days shorter than the sea voyage from Shanghai to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, according to Aqayi.

The railway will not stop in Tehran "as we are planning to extend the railway to Europe in future," generating more income for Iran from passing trains, he added.

The train will leave every month and the frequency will be increased if necessary, Aqayi said.

The train is run by private companies using existing routes, Iranian railway company spokesman Sadegh Sakari told AFP.

According to Iranian media, more than a third of Iran's foreign trade is with China, which is Tehran's top customer for oil exports.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani agreed last month to build economic ties worth up to $600 billion within the next 10 years.

It came during a visit to Iran by Xi, the first by a Chinese president in 14 years, and just days after sanctions against Tehran were lifted under a historic nuclear deal with world powers.

Xi's signature foreign policy initiative known as "One Belt One Road" is touted as a revival of ancient Silk Road trade routes.

The Silk Road is an ancient network of commercial land and sea routes, named for the lucrative Chinese silk trade, that were central to business across the Asian continent connecting China to the Mediterranean Sea.

China's Silk Road revival steams ahead as cargo train arrives in Iran

Goods travel 6,462 miles in 14 days as part of efforts to resurrect ancient trade route connecting east with Europe

A long-distance cargo train has travelled from China to Iran as part of an attempted revival of the ancient Silk Road, a trans-Asian trade route connecting the east to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea.

The 32-container train, which arrived in Tehran on Monday, took 14 days to complete the 6,462 mile (10,399km) journey from China’s eastern Zhejiang province through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – one month less than the sea route from Shanghai to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian officials have indicated that the ultimate aim is to extend the rail route to Europe, positioning Iran on a key stretch to the continent. The train, which departed from Zhejiang’s trading hub Yiwu, travelled an average of more than 700km a day.

“Countries along the Silk Road are striving to revive the ancient network of trade routes,” said Mohsen Pour Seyed Aghaei, president of the Islamic Republic of IranRailways company, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency. “The arrival in Tehran of the train in less than a fortnight has been an unprecedented achievement.”

He said the train had outstripped “truck and road transport” and demonstrated the great advantage of the route.

China is Iran’s biggest trading partner. Commercial ties continued despite decade-long international sanctions over Tehran’s nuclear programme, which were lifted in January after last year’s landmark nuclear deal.

Last month, Chinese president Xi Jinping became the first global leader to visit Tehran since the sanctions were lifted. The two nations signed an agreement on boosting trade to $600bn (£420bn) over the next decade.

The revived Silk Road is envisioned as a rail and sea route, part of China’s “One Belt, One Road” economic development strategy. An Iranian container ship, the Perarin, arrived in Guangxi in southern China last month, delivering 978 containers from a number of countries along the maritime route.

“Iran is strategically located in the Middle East, sharing land borders with 15 nations and sea channels on its northern and southwestern coasts,” said Iran’s state-owned Press TV. “China sees Iran as a country that can play a crucial role in China’s New Silk Road initiative, given its access to extensive delivery routes connecting to the Middle East and Eurasia.”

In October 2014, a long-distance luxury train, operating in the style of the Orient Express, arrived in the Iranian city of Zanjan from Budapest – the first time a European private train had been permitted to enter Iranian territory. Prices for the two-week tour on the Golden Eagle Danube Express ranged from £8,695 to £13,995 per person.

As I have mentioned in the below thread, The Oil trade to China would use this existing train route and not CPEC.

CPEC would be primarily used for the logistics support to the Chinese naval base in Gwadar apart from trade with Africa.

Guys!!! Is Pakistan in trouble regarding CPEC? Iran offers China | Page 15

Simply that the rail connecting Iran to China via Pakistan still not ready, doesn't mean that CPEC will not be use in the future to carry oil, your assumption is just too premature. CPEC will be a bright future to China, Pakistan and eventually Iran once it's connected.
