India has undocked its first indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited.

The successful completion of the 40,000 tonne aircraft carrier puts India in the elite group of four nations - the US, Russia, the UK and France - in the world capable of designing and constructing aircraft carriers.

Will undergo fitment and trial processes

Basic design

The basic design of the indigenous aircraft carrier was done by the Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design, which was developed into detailed design by the design team of CSL.

Take-off runways and a landing strip

It has two take-off runways and a landing strip with three arrester wires, capable of operating STOBAR aircraft including the indigenous LCA, as well as a range of helicopters with hangar facilities.

Trials

Major outfitting work of the ship will be done now.

Later basin trials and extensive sea trials will be undertaken prior to delivery to the Navy, the CSL officials said.

Aircraft will be deployed

Eventually, fighter aircraft - Mig-29K, Light Combat Aircraft and Kamov-31 helicopters - will deployed on board the carrier which will also carry an array of other weapons systems.

Capacity

INS Vikrant has the capacity to carry 36 fighter planes.

The flight deck of IAC will have the capacity to hold 19 aircraft and the hangar inside will have room for 17 fighters.

Other details

The time interval between the take-offs of two fighters from the ship can be as low as three minutes and can be reduced to less than two minutes, naval officials have said in the past.

Built indigenously

Nearly 90% of INS Vikrant's hull has been built indigenously with DRDO and SAIL supplying high quality steel.

According to the Indian Navy, the ship's ability to sense and control a large air space around it will be enabled by modern C/D band Early Air Warning Radar, V/UHF Tactical Air Navigational and Direction Finding systems, jamming capabilities over the expected Electro Magnetic (EM) environment and Carrier Control Approach Radars to aid air operations.

Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR SAM) systems with Multi-Function Radar (MFR) and Close- In Weapon System (CIWS) will form the protective suite of the ship.

The control room looks advanced and clean.
Its looks cleaner than the chinese casino...And the russian built vikramaditya...
 
I was thinking I would never get to see this in my life time. So glad to see it undocked and finally taking shape. Godspeed Vikrant !!

And yes, that control structure looks super clean .

New Delhi (Sputnik) – The LR-SAM has long-range engagement capability to penetrate deep water and land to intercept all types of aerial targets like subsonic & supersonic missiles, fighter aircraft, maritime patrolling aircraft (MPA), helicopter and sea skimming missiles. It will be effective in countering newest generation anti-ship missiles like the Harpoon and Exocet. The Indian Navy has already decided to equip its all the naval ships such as INS Kolkata, INS Kochi, and INS Chennai guided missile destroyer
