Firing between Pak-Afghan forces at Torkham border

I now firmly believe that ...Taliban's have to be brought back in Kabul... we can't afford Indian annexy in our backyard

I said this before

A stable Afghanistan has ceased to be in our interest

The Afghan government and military in its current form is an enemy

We should drastically reduce Afghan trade access if not completely block it, let them wait for Chabahar (whenever that will be ready ) and refuse any extention to the right of afghan refugees to remain in our country

If they want emnity, lets give them emnity

Lets see if Iran, CA or anyone else will tolerate these haram khor afghans like we have

Using dead horse Loy Afghanistan to futher their political goals thats Afghanistan for you little do they know this will harm Afghan army more than Pakistan

What Loy Afghanistan ? Afghanistan has threats from her ownself with half of Pashtoon population while half or more non-Pashtoons. As long as you do not give political representation and equal one to all sides you cannot see a peaceful Afghanistan. Pakistani Pukhtun population has nothing to do with internal Afghan politics of blood and dead bodies

@WebMaster @Horus

Just received some graphics in one of which at least 8 Afghan soldiers' bodies are lying down. Due to forum policy I can't post but if anyone wants for personal information you can inbox
If this is the picture where one soldier is sitting beside the head of the bodies, and the dead soldiers have bandages around their faces then that is an old picture,

I know that is why I wanted to confirm before circulating even privately. It was some other angle . The one you are talking about is of incident where many of them were beheaded in Taliban ambush.

KHYBER AGENCY/ISLAMABAD - The situation remained tense at Torkham border following new clashes between security forces of Pakistan and Afghanistan after a short-lived ceasefire on Monday.

Overnight skirmishes killed at least one person wounded 18 others, forcing around 200 Pakistani families to relocate to safer areas.

At least seven security personnel, including one Frontier Corps (FC) trooper and three Khasadars, and 10 civilians sustained injuries in the clashes over installation of a gate by Pakistani officials.

Both the forces used heavy artillery, targeting each other’s positions. The wounded were shifted to Landi Kotal military and civil hospitals. Those in critical condition were referred to Peshawar. The hospital sources confirmed 10 civilians were injured in the border firing.

A ceasefire was agreed early on Monday but Afghan forces resorted to firing 20 minutes before Iftari which led to retaliation by the Pakistanis.

Local sources said Pak Army repulsed the attack of Afghan forces. Lt-Col Amir, Major Junaid and Iftikhar, a soldier, were injured in the clashes.

Afghan media, quoting Afghan forces, said their one soldier was killed and five others were wounded in cross-border firing. Extra troops equipped with heavy weapons were deployed on the border to tackle the situation, the sources said.

Curfew was imposed in Torkham and Landi Kotal bazaar and people were asked to stay at home while all kind of movement was restricted.

Due to the tension, the residential area of Bacha Mena near the border was evacuated; dozens of families fled and took refuge in Landi Kotal, locals revealed. Zawar Amir, a resident of bordering area, said scores of mortar and artillery shells landed near their houses in Bacha Mena, forcing them to rush to Landi Kotal along with their families.

Parking lots, located in Torkham, were vacated and Afghanistan-bound loaded trailers were sent back to Peshawar, a truck driver, Abdullah, disclosed.

It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan has never accepted Torkham as a formal border. The Afghans are of the view that Afghanistan and the British India had been partitioned by an agreement signed by Amir Abdur Rehman and the British representative, Durand, in 1893.They say the pact expired in 1993, so Torkham is no more a border.

According to ISPR, the Afghan security forces targeted the under-construction gate at Torkham, which is 37 metres inside the Pakistan territory. ISPR said the gate was considered essential to check and verify documentation of all border crossers with special regard to stop terrorists’ movement.

"Pakistan wanted to build new installations and Afghan border forces didn't allow it. Pakistan went further and fired towards Afghan forces,” Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah told a meeting of ministers in Kabul.

Abdullah insists bilateral understandings bind the two countries to seek mutual consent before constructing new installations near the border.

Pakistan also Monday summoned the Afghan Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad to convey its “strong protest” over what it called the unprovoked firing by the Afghan forces.

“The Afghan Charge d’ Affaires was told that the firing incident was contrary to the spirit of friendly relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Afghan side was urged to thoroughly investigate the incident and share the findings with Pakistani authorities.

It was further emphasized that all steps should be taken for avoiding recurrence of such incidents in the future, the ministry added.

“It was conveyed to the Afghan side that the regulation of movements at Torkham is part of government’s policy to strengthen border management, and Afghan government’s cooperation was needed as it would enhance mutual security and help to combat the threat of terrorism,” the statement said.

Afghanistan also summoned the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul to protest the firing incident.

Two girls among 13 injured; Afghan diplomat summoned to FO to lodge strong protest

LANDIKOTAL: Afghan forces again fired at Pakistani positions at Torkham on Monday when the Pakistanis restarted work on the construction and re-installation of the border gate, sources said.

The Afghans reportedly used mortars to target the Bacha Maina village close to the Pak-Afghan border. However, no casualty was reported. The reinforced Pakistani forces at the border returned fire. The Pakistan Army had earlier sent reinforcements to Torkham backed by tanks and other heavy weapons to deter the Afghan authorities from attacking Pakistan’s border installations. The soldiers were in the lead as they took positions on the border while the paramilitary forces and the Khassadars were holding the second line of defence.

Two girls, a Frontier Corps soldier and some Khassadars were among the 13 Pakistanis who were earlier injured in late Sunday firing by the Afghan forces on the Pakistani security personnel when they were installing a gate at the Torkham border crossing, sources said.

A senior Pakistani official, on condition of anonymity, told The News that the incident took place when Pakistan’s border forces were busy in reinstalling the Torkham border gate that had been removed in 2004 when the Pakistan-funded Torkham-Jalalabad Road was being built.

He said Afghan border officials reacted angrily and exchanged harsh words with the Pakistanis who were busy putting up the steel gate. The Afghan government doesn't recognise the Durand Line as an international border and skirmishes have broken out at Torkham in the past as well whenever Pakistan took steps to strengthen border management. Recently, the Afghan soldiers cocked their guns while threatening Pakistanis doing fencing work inside Pakistani territory at Torkham and Pakistan reacted by closing the border for nearly four days.

The sources said the personnel of the Afghanistan National Army (ANA) and Afghan border police took positions and resorted to unprovoked firing at Pakistani installations Sunday night. They added that various positions near Torkham inside Pakistan and the border village of Bacha Maina were targeted with light and heavy guns.

The sources said the Frontier Crops, Khyber Levies and Khassadar force personnel retaliated to repulse the attack by the Afghan forces. They also targeted the Afghan checkposts and offices on the Afghan side of the Torkham border.

At least 13 persons, including two girls, a Frontier Corps soldier and two Khassadars received bullet injuries. They were rushed to the Agency Headquarters Hospital in Landikotal. Seven of the injured persons were later shifted to hospitals in Peshawar, the hospital sources said.

Those wounded were identified as Khassadar Sepoy Fazal and Sepoy Sartaj, nine-year old Aleena Bibi, eight-year old Nargis Bibi, Majid Khan, Noor Said, Etibar Gul, Hazrat Nabi, Wali Khan, Johar Ali, Shoaib and Shams. The name of the injured Frontier Corps soldier could not be ascertained.

The firing at the border began at 10:00pm Sunday night and continued till Monday morning. An Afghan soldier was reportedly killed in the exchange of fire while five other soldiers injured, sources said.

The political administration imposed curfew in Landikotal subdivision to prevent any untoward incident. The Landikotal and Torkham bazaars remained closed on Monday. Residents in Landikotal were asked to remain at home to avoid harm. Around 2,000 Pakistani families were evacuated from the Bacha Maina village sited at the border with Afghanistan.

Sources at the Afghan side of the border told this scribe that the Afghan Customs House building, Afghan Commissioner Office and several shops caught fire after being hit by heavy guns fired from the Pakistan side.

Emergency had been declared at the Agency headquarters Hospital and the Combined Military Hospital in Landikotal. Extra contingents of paramilitary troops were deployed at various border localities to repulse any attack from the Afghanistan side, sources added. A large number of Frontier Corps contingents backed by tanks and heavy guns were also moved to take positions alongside the Torkham border, sources said.

The Torkham border remained closed on Monday. More than 2,000 heavy trucks loaded with fresh fruit, vegetables, construction material and other export goods were sent back to Peshawar from Torkham due to closure of the border.

All the roads leading towards Torkham were blocked and paramilitary forces were seen patrolling the road between Landikotal and Torkham. Meanwhile, Pakistan lodged a strong protest with Afghanistan over the unprovoked firing by the Afghan forces at Pakistani forces at the Torkham border crossing.

A statement from the Foreign Office said the Afghan Charge d Affaires was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and asked that the incident be thoroughly investigated and the findings be shared with Pakistani authorities. It was further emphasised that all steps should be taken for avoiding recurrence of such incidents in future, the statement said.

The Afghan Charge d Affaires was told that the firing incident was contrary to the spirit of friendly relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Foreign Office said the firing was aimed at disrupting the construction of a gate well inside Pakistani territory at the border designed to facilitate cross border movement of people and vehicles.

It was conveyed to the Afghan side that the regulation of movement at Torkham was part of government’s policy to strengthen border management. The Foreign Office said the Afghan government’s cooperation was needed to enhance mutual security and help combat the threat of terrorism.

Pakistan, Afghanistan increase troops at Khyber Pass border after clash
PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN|BYJIBRAN AHMED

A Pakistani military officer died on Tuesday after being shot by Afghan forces during a clash at the Torkham border, Pakistan's military said, a development likely to ratchet up tension between the neighbors who sources said were beefing up troop numbers on either side.

The main gates at Torkham remained closed for a third day on Tuesday, leaving thousands stranded on either side of the most frequented official border crossing at the end of the Khyber Pass.

Firing between Pakistani and Afghan forces first broke out on Sunday evening at the crossing, about 45 km (28 miles) west of Peshawar, over the construction of a new border post on the Pakistani side.

Major Jawad Ali Changezi was among nine Pakistani and six Afghan troops who were wounded in the fighting, according to security officials. One Afghan soldier was killed, Afghan officials said on Monday.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's office and the Pakistani military's press wing confirmed Changezi's death.

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained for months. Kabul says Pakistan is harboring militants seeking to overthrow the Afghan government, including the Haqqani Network and the leadership of the Afghan Taliban.

Pakistan denies it supports militants and says it is building the gate at Torkham to stop the movement of militants across the border.

"This gate (is) considered essential to check & verify documentation of all border crossers," tweeted Asim Bajwa, the Pakistani military's chief spokesperson, on Monday.

On Tuesday, Afghanistan summoned the Pakistani ambassador to register its protest at the violence. Pakistan had similarly summoned the Afghan Charge d'Affaires in Islamabad on Monday.

Pakistani security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, said the army had moved heavy weaponry and additional troops to the Afghan border on Monday night.

On Monday, an Afghan border police commander also confirmed that reinforcements had been deployed to the Afghan side of the border.

The Pakistan-Afghanistan border has long remained porous and disputed. Afghanistan has blocked repeated attempts by Pakistan to build a fence on sections of the roughly 2,200km (1,370 mile) long frontier, rejecting the contours of the boundary.
