Gros contrat en vue en Inde, Actualités

The source is said to be close to Dassault and should have good infos, the costs at current exchange rates would be $2.1 billion dollar for the upgrade and $700 million to $1.2 billion for missiles (depending on quantity).

The Rafale newsblog is also reporting about this, but mainly with infos from Livefist, but the last comment is interesting:

Rafale News: MMRCA, India clears Mirage upgrade deal

Would be interesting what changes are included to make it close to the UAE Mirages and could also be a hind on why the upgrade is so costly.

and they will serve 20-25 years more..

.
So...basically they are almost at rafale's standards. IF we select rafale, it will be 126+51=177!!! Nice move.

It will have similar techs and weapons, but there is still a huge gap between the upgraded Mirage 2000 and the Rafale F3+. The Rafale will have AESA radar, passiv detection capabilities, a more capable EWS and can carry way more loads to greater distances. It's more like, these upgraded Mirage will be between LCA MK1 and Rafale in terms of capablity and performance.

waow price of brand new
Mig 29k - around 48 million${including spares}

Gripen NG-around 55-60 million {with AESA}

F 18 SH- around 60 million ${i think that was wat offered to India in MRCA competition}

J 10b- around 40 million$

And here we are wasting 48 million$ on upgrading a 30 year old piece of scrap...and mind this upgrade doesn't include engine.......hhh wat a waste of money.....and then we say that why Russia is charging us so much for there aircrafts

.
There has to be something in the clause that we dont know about which makes this deal sound so costly.

Not all details will come out in the public, right?

.
Not sure about that but will be definitely a big boost. But I think the important point here is that only 2 jets will be flown to France for upgrades. The rest will be upgraded in India itself.The Indian facility in the future would theoretically support Rafales.
Yaa..that would be the bottom line. Maybe it is a bit pricey, but what we are getting in return is priceless [the technology transfer].

IMO, they are bringing these jets to F-16 block 52+ for obvious reasons.;)

Moreeover, India is trying to absorb all it can and what ever fighter it purchases henceforth will be built in India totally so that we can put the experience and knowledge on our indigenous fighters. [Eg: Su-30MKI, Mirage, MMRCA]

India approves proposals for French firms to upgrade IAF fleet

NEW DELHI (PTI): The Indian government has cleared proposals worth over $3 billion for upgrading the fleet of 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

As per the proposals, French firms Dassault and Thales will upgrade the aircraft, which will add 20-25 years to the life of the Mirages, inducted by the IAF in the mid-80s.

"The proposals related to upgrade of the Mirage 2000 were cleared by a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)," a defence ministry official said Wednesday.

Two different proposals, one for the upgrade of systems of the aircraft and the other for over 400 MICA missiles for the upgraded fleet, were placed before the CCS.

Under the deal, the French firms will help in upgrading the avionics, navigation systems, mission computers, electronic warfare systems and radars bringing the aircraft to the Mirage-2000-5 standards.

The French companies will have to invest over $900 million into the Indian defence sector as defence offsets.

As per the Indian defence offsets policy, foreign vendors bagging deals worth over Rs 300 crore have to invest at least 30% of the worth of the deal back into the Indian defence, civilian aerospace and homeland security sectors.
I think defence ministry should increase the offset limit to 50% for this specific deal{like mrca}....they are charging tooo much from us for polishing the aircraft.....

Government okays $2.4 bn Mirage-2000 upgrade
NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday cleared a $2.4 billion deal with France for upgrading India's Mirage-2000 combat planes, informed sources said.

The deal was cleared at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh , the sources said.

The move comes even as India's defence ministry and the Indian Air Force top brass is split over the high cost of upgrading the IAF's 52 Mirage-2000 aircraft and the likely benefits to the country's future air power needs.

Taking into account $1 billion for new weapons and another $500 million for new facilities at Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the upgrade, the cost could rise to close to $4 billion, defence ministry officials said.

The cost of the upgrade may work out to $7.9 million per aircraft, which, the opponents of the deal contend, is the same as that of a new fighter jets that India is buying under the $10.4 billion medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) tender.

Those supporting the deal argue that once upgraded, the aircraft will be as potent as a new combat plane.

Among the upgrades planned for Mirage-2000 are a night vision goggle-compatible glass cockpit, advanced navigational systems, advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, advanced multi-mode multi-layered radar, fully integrated electronic warfare suite and advanced beyond visual range (BVR) capability.

The new weapons include 450 MICA interception and aerial combat missiles. French firms Thales and MBDA will be the weapons systems integrator and missiles supplier respectively.

Two of the planes will be upgraded in France by manufacturer Dassault Aviation, two in India with French help and the remaining 48 entirely by the HAL. The upgrade of the entire fleet will take nine years.

The IAF inducted the Mirage-2000 between 1982 and 1986.
