Fear pervades China's Uighurs

Point is not that, it is the corollary - If Muslims suffer anywhere except Pakistan and China, it is because the local government is oppressive (also called terrorists) and anti-Islam. Or if Pakistan, China or any Islamic country oppress their minorities, it is because their minorities are unpatriotic and anti-national. Don't you think that is hypocrisy?

I am fully in agreement with the latter logic btw. Just that we should maintain consistency when judging the role of the state in controlling its people.

Assuming and blowing out of proportion is not a wise thing as this only happned once and happened in 2007 and ever since it is no mre, So lay off and don't uproot dead from their resting place.

Shamefull deduction comparing it with genocide.

exegeration of the worst kind.

I know Indian agenda, to divide as it did in the case of East Pakistan, read many Bangladeshis brothers on this forum, they are right fully mad at india.

my P.O.V is that by saparating a people from their larger partners loses its quatitative and qualitive edge and is susaptable to bullying of those who are mean spirited and have alterior motives.

If u Indians are so welfare minded and are so concerned about opression of other why don't u than let kashmiris decide their fate as per their wishes.

U and I know that indian army has killed 90,000 Kashmiris so far. so it looks if u have an agenda and do not really have concern for the welfare of Uighers.

Where is LeT, Al-Qaida ?? The protectors of Islamic brotherhood ?? Do they have any guts to take on the Chinese ?? I guess not. They will reduced to ashes in the very caves they are hiding in, if they face China's wrath !

U R assuming that some sects as per u have no guts, is a clever try to rile people against china.

Dictator CPC and Han chauvinism is really pain for minorities. Millions of Uigher Muslims and Tibetans are facing danger on daily basis. But other countries just do plain talking and not help Uighur Muslims.

Xinjiang is Chinese Land, NOT East extended territory of Turkey.

Pakistan should raise the issue of Uighurs with the Chinese. We have close cultural and religious links with Uighurs. Uighuristan and Pakistan have common border. Uighuristan had close contacts with Mughal Empire.

There is NO Uighuristan

This is Xinjiang

Our West Region

If you are pan-Islamists, I definitely tell you that WE ARE NOT SERBIA!!!

We (1.4 billions of brothers) will not allow Xinjiang beome next KOSOVO!!!

I expect the PRC nationalists to belittle the reporters words. But, yes, the Pakistanis will turn a blind eye. Better to rail against the Israelis and their treatment of "brother" Palestinians then comment on what is going on over the border in your powerful neighbors yard. The all-weather friend must be protected from criticism.

I don't know why White American always want to destabilize China via minorities' issue.

This is absurd - Secondly there is no such thing is Uiguristan - There is only one China and we should support strong united China.Mughal Empire is long gone - These type of justifications cannot be used to support Islamic Radicals.

China seeks Pak help to deal with separatists on border

BEIJING: China on Thursday made it clear it is banking heavily on Pakistan's support to fight the Uighur separatists in the border region of Xingjian, who have posed on of the biggest challenges to Chinese authorities.

The two countries have devised an anti-terrorism program under which Pakistani security forces will push back Uighur fighters trying to cross the border to seek sanctuary in terrorists camps in Pakistan.

"We should work together to deepen bilateral cooperation in defense security and other sectors," Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the Chinese parliament, told the visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The two neighbors are now trying to intensify their "strategic cooperative partnership".

Pakistan has obtained huge benefits including nuclear assistance by utilizing China's fears of Islamic fundamentalism spilling over to its border. But Wu's public statement will prove to be an added help to Pakistani leaders in their quest to gain public support for the operation against Uighur separatists who enjoy some support within Pakistan.

Both We and Chinese defense minister Liang Guanglie asking Kayani to enhance the involvement of the armed forces from the two sides in the fight against what is called the 'East Turkistan Islamic movement' by Uighur seeking to split China to create an independent nation. One of the things Beijing desperately wants is Pakistani help in cutting off the links between Uighur separatists and Islamic fundamentalists groups across the border in Pakistan.

China and Pakistan have held anti-terrorism exercises at the Xinjiang's Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County bordering Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2004 and a second such exercise in the hilly area of northern Pakistan's Abbottabad in 2006. Preparations are on to launch another military exercise involving troops from both countries to frighten the Xingjian separatists, sources said.

Wu said the "bilateral all-weather friendship" between the two countries in the fundamental interests of the people in their respective countries besides promoting regional peace and development. Kayani said Pakistan was ready to seek stronger relationship with China, the official media reported in Beijing. "Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang said.

Several Chinese leaders including Meng Jianzhu, Minister for Public Security and Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission met Kayani, who is on a five day visit to China.

The Real Story of the Uighur Riots
Heavy-handed police tactics by the Chinese turned a peaceful assembly into a bloodbath.

By REBIYA KADEER in WALL STREET JOURNAL

When the Chinese government looks back on its handling of the unrest in Urumqi and East Turkestan this week, it will most likely tell the world that it acted in the interests of maintaining stability. It will most likely forget to explain why thousands of Uighurs risked everything to speak out against injustice, or why hundreds of Uighurs are now dead for exercising their right to protest.

On Sunday, students organized a protest in the Döng Körük (Erdaoqiao) area of Urumqi. They wished to express discontent with the Chinese authorities' inaction on the mob killing and beating of Uighurs at a toy factory in Shaoguan in China's southern Guangdong province and to express sympathy with the families of those killed and injured.

A peaceful assembly turned violent as some elements of the crowd reacted to heavy-handed policing. I unequivocally condemn the use of violence by Uighurs during the demonstration as much as I do China's use of excessive force against protestors.

A woman is hit with a baton held by a Chinese soldier wearing riot gear as a crowd of angry locals confront security forces on a street in the city of Urumqi in China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region, July 7, 2009.

Wang Lequan, party secretary of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, has blamed me for the unrest. However, it is years of Chinese repression of Uighurs -- topped by further confirmation that Chinese officials have no interest in observing the rule of law -- that is the cause of the current Uighur discontent.

China's brutal reaction to Sunday's protest will only reinforce these views. Uighur sources within East Turkestan say 400 Uighurs in Urumqi have died as a result of police shootings and beatings. There is no accurate figure for the number of injured.

A curfew has been imposed, telephone lines are down, and the city remains tense. Uighurs have contacted me to report that the Chinese authorities are conducting a house-to-house search of Uighur homes and are arresting male Uighurs. They say that Uighurs are afraid to walk the streets in the capital of their homeland.

The unrest is spreading. The cities of Kashgar, Yarkand, Aksu, Khotan and Karamay may have also seen unrest, though it's hard to tell, given China's state-run propaganda. Kashgar has been the worst effected of these cities and unconfirmed reports state that over 100 Uighurs have been killed there. Troops have entered Kashgar, and sources in the city say that two Chinese soldiers have been posted to each Uighur house.

The recent Uighur repression has taken on a racial tone. The Chinese government is known for encouraging a nationalistic streak among Han Chinese as it seeks to replace the bankrupt communist ideology it used to promote. This nationalism was in evidence as the Han Chinese mob attacked Uighur workers in Shaoguan.

This official encouragement of reactionary nationalism among Han Chinese makes the path forward very difficult. The World Uighur Congress that I head, much like the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan movement, advocates peaceful establishment of self-determination with genuine respect for human rights and democracy. Han Chinese and Uighurs need to achieve a dialogue based on trust, mutual respect and equality. Under present Chinese government policies, this is not possible.

To rectify the deteriorating situation in East Turkestan, the Chinese government must first properly investigate the Shaoguan killings and bring those responsible for the killing of Uighurs to justice. An independent and open inquiry into the Urumqi unrest also needs to be conducted so that Han Chinese and Uighurs can understand the reasons for Sunday's events and seek ways to establish understanding.

The United States has a key role to play in this process. It has always spoken out on behalf of the oppressed; this is why it has been been a leader in presenting the Uighur case to the Chinese government. At this critical juncture, the U.S. must condemn the violence in Urumqi and establish a consulate in Urumqi. A consulate can act as a beacon of freedom in an environment of fierce repression and monitor the daily human-rights abuses perpetrated against the Uighurs.

As I write this piece, reports are reaching our office in Washington that 4,000 Han Chinese took to the streets in Urumqi on Monday seeking revenge by carrying out acts of violence against Uighurs. On Tuesday, more Han Chinese took to the streets. As the violence escalates, so does the pain I feel for the loss of all innocent lives. I fear the Chinese government will not experience this pain as it reports on its version of events in Urumqi. It is this lack of self-examination that further divides Han Chinese and Uighurs.
