NEW DELHI: With an eye on China as well as in keeping with India's "Look East" policy, the Navy is slowly but surely bolstering force levels on the eastern coast with new warships, aircraft and spy drones as well as forward-operating bases (FOBs).

So much so that the Navy has now upgraded the post of the chief of staff (CoS) at the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), which is next only to the flag officer commanding-in-chief, to a three-star general rank. Vice-Admiral S Lanba will take over as the new CoS at ENC on May 1, 2011. The other full-fledged naval operational command, the Western Naval Command (WNC) based at Mumbai, has had a vice-admiral as the CoS for quite some time now.

Additions to the ENC, which has around 50 warships at present, include the new indigenously-manufactured stealth frigate INS Shivalik, which is packed with weapons and sensors, and the 16,900-tonne INS Jalashwa, the huge strategic sea-lift amphibious warship second only to aircraft carrier INS Viraat in size.

"The next two indigenous stealth frigates being built at Mazagon Docks, INS Satpura and INS Sahyadri, which should be commissioned by 2012, will also be based in ENC. Tuticorin and Paradeep are being developed as FOB and OTR (operational turn-around) bases," said a source.

Then, the new fleet tanker, INS Shakti, which should come to India from Italy by September, and the P-8I Poseidon long-range maritime patrol aircraft will also be based in ENC. India is acquiring 12 P-8I aircraft, the first of which is slated for induction by early-2013, from the US for over $3 billion to plug the existing gaps in its surveillance of the entire Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

While these aircraft will be based in Rajali, Navy is also going to deploy spy drones or UAVs at the Parundu air station in Tamil Nadu. At present, Navy has two UAV squadrons based at Kochi and Porbandar, with Parundu and Port Blair next on the agenda. As part of Navy's three-tier aerial surveillance grid for IOR, the drones are already being used for the innermost layer reconnaissance up to 200 nautical miles.

The west is in decline, whilst they are becoming more and more like the former Soviets. The East on the other hand, is rapidly growing financially and militarily. This is great news for Asia.

If India would just release Jammu & Kashmir and South Tibet (Arunachal Pradesh) from its illegal control, India would not have to worry about confronting China.

Going by this analogy if China were to renounce its claims over Formosa ( Taiwan) it would not have to worry over confronting the US .

China claims Taiwan and considers it a renegade province . It does not matter if this claim is right or wrong but the claim is respected by most of the world & the UN who gave its UNSC seat to Mainland China taking it away from Taiwan.

Similarly, India is right when it says the land in its possession belongs to it.

@ the topic , to progress within and to have its word taken seriously all nations must have strong economies & defence. This is just another step in that direction.

I think you have the Formosa situation wrong.

Taiwan is governed by a Chinese government, the Republic of China government. The communist mainland claimed the island after the preceding government fled there. For years the the ROC government on Taiwan claimed the mainland as part of its China, but had given up after the older generations passed on.

And this misconception of Indians that Taiwan had a permanent seat in the security council overwhelms me. The allies and China (ROC) founded the UN and UNSC after World War II (when Indians still enjoyed British citizenship). After the pro-American government lost to the communists on the mainland, they fled to Taiwan and continued representing all of China until Mao decided to collaborate with the US in the fight against the Soviet Union. (At which point, the US had given up trying to remove the communist government through Taiwan but instead turned it into a deterrent against Chinese expansion; much like how China is trying to set up naval bases in Sri Lanka)

Having anti-ship ballastic missiles; which can take out Nimitz class supercarriers; in their hands I don't think no. of ships is going to create a diffrence...

Btw I am don't believe that there could be long term war b/w these two. Both India & China can't afford it.

Well we will never do that & even if we do China will then start claiming Assam & Himachal Pradesh.

Chinese anti-shipping ballistic missile can't evade SM-3 interceptors especially the block-3 ones

How are assets divided among the Eastern command and the Western command primarily for the navy?

Off late all new machines are being added to the Eastern command only.

.
Where are we going to deploy Our Indigenous Aircraft carrier ?
We should deploy IAC at eastern command and Vikramaditya at Western command.

.
Please, deploy all your ships on the eastern command. The bulk of US forces to your west are all smiling.

The Security council seat was held by ROC from 1945 to 1971. PRC first attended the UNSC meet on 23 Nov 71. Till then the rep of Repubic of China ( ROC) now located in Taiwan occupied the seat.

The seat always belonged to the country of "China". First represented by the Republic of China, which was then succeeded by the People's Republic of China.

Similar to when Russia inherited the seat that once belonged to its predecessor, the Soviet Union.
