Egypt shows interest in buying of Pakistani JF-17 Thunder fighter jet

RAWALPINDI (APP) – Egyptian Ambassador to Pakistan, Sherif Shaheen called on Federal Minister for Defence Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain here on Friday and showed his country’s interest in buying JF-17 Thunder.

During the meeting, the minister said that Pakistan is presently selling its traditional weapons to USA, United Kingdom (UK), Germany and Far-East.

He offered sale of JF-17 and Super Mashak to Egypt and said Iraq has already signed an agreement for purchase of 20 Super Mashak with Pakistan while deal with Turkey to buy 52 Super Mashak is almost finalized.

Rana Tanvir also emphasized on joint venture in defence Production between the two countries.

Admiring Egypt’s strong and close ties with Pakistan, he said Egypt is keen for cooperation in the field of defence production.

“A close cooperation between the two countries will also help other Muslim countries over the world,” he added.

The Ambassador said his country is looking at collaboration in defence industry as the core of relations between Pakistan and Egypt.

Moreover, the Cadet Exchange programme in the field of military training is much appreciated by both the countries.

Sherif Shaheen said that Egypt will send a defence delegation to visit the defence production establishments and look into buying defence related products from Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Egyptian Ambassador to Pakistan, Sherif Shaheen met minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain and showed his country’s attention to purchase Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder.

Responding to Ambassador’s interest, the minister said during the meeting that Pakistan is currently selling its weapon production to USA, United Kingdom, Germany and Far-East.

The defence minister proposed sale of JF-17 as well as Super Mashak to Egypt while bragging off Iraq’s signing an agreement to buy a score Super Mashak and Turkey’s agreement to buy 52 Super Mushak is almost done.

Lauding Egypt’s potent and close relations with Pakistan, Tanvir said Egypt is ardent for collaboration in the area of defence production.

“A close cooperation between the two countries will also help other Muslim countries over the world,” added the defence minister.

The Egyptian Ambassador expressed his country’s wish to collaborate in defence production as the core of ties between Pakistan and Egypt.

The Ambassador said that his country would send a defence delegation to pay a visit to have a brief look at the defence production establishments and look into purchasing defence weapons from Pakistan.

If the pockets are deep enough there is no harm in getting two platform one in the Medium and the other in the Light category especially when there is an option for local assembly.

We already ordered 15 KT-1T from KAI in April 2015 as a stop-gap solution until we begin producing Hurkuş...

why would they do that? no offense, but i like to think of the jf-17 as a disposable fighter. it can do quite a lot of things, and built like a rock,and if for what ever reason its damaged or destroyed its no bigee as it did not cost much to purchase. that basically means you can buy bulk at a low price. thats what paf is doing. or you can buy low numbers, which is about 12 or a single minimum squadron. which is what catic and paf is banking on as the countries who are interesting in buying it would have little money. so if Egypt is interested in it then it would make sense they buy a lot of them [48+] as it can compliment other fighters and would be good for short range patrols, but this makes no sense as eygpt is a huge country geographically and it needs the range. hence why the mig 29 was chosen over the jf-17.

Mate, it's not logical... We operate 40 KT-1Ts for basic trainer.

We are about the begin producing Hürkuş.

But as a stop-gap solution army wanted 15 additional KT-1Ts and officials ordered, deal is done. After the deal, officials came under fire as media, people started saying "Why don't we produce Hurkuş and order a foreign trainer instead"... officials had a hard time to explain that "They only bought them as a stop-gap solution".

This thing makes absolutely non-sense for me.

Buying JF-17 is the very same reason why they buy China K-8. They want an aircraft with low maintenance while giving them more input in dealing with production of aircraft. This is something buying a Mig-29 will not accomplished. MIg-29 is a fine aircraft but Mig is nototious company when comes to spare and repair plus the 2 engine is quite hefty maintenance problem especially for not a rich country like Egypt.

Super Mushshak is a more advanced, upgraded variant of the MFI-17 Mushshak basic trainer. It was designed by and is being manufactured at the Aircraft Manufacturing Factory, Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Pakistan

The KAI KT-1 Woongbi is a Korean single-engined turboprop, basic training aircraft.

The TAI Hürkuş is a tandem two-seat, low-wing, single-engine, turboprop aircraft being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries as a new basic trainer and ground attack aircraft for the Turkish Armed Forces
