It really wouldn't matter that much because NATO is a defensive alliance.

If NATO is a military pact (like Warsaw Pact) then yes, controlling those strategic location would benefit NATO if there were any offensive operation or strategic gain, but since NATO is a defensive alliance, those strategic location wouldn't really mean much in times of a collective defence because someone has to cross over the line to attack NATO member before NATO kick in. For Turkey case, it only benefits NATO if NATO uses Turkey to invade the Caucasus for whatever reason and take land from Russia, Georgia or Kazakhstan, that probably go against the principal of NATO collective defence strategy.

The only way Turkey make sense is when NATO admit Georgia into NATO, then NATO would need a land bridge to deploy force to Georgia and Turkey would become a lot more accessible.
