I need your help guyz.

I have this cousin brother who was born and brought up outside India. Brilliant in studies and an all rounder. Popular among the students.

His parents wanted him to do his graduation and masters in US/Australia but he insisted on studying in India as most of his friends had plans to join colleges in India.
He managed to get into one of the premier engineering colleges in India and is doing his Mechanical engineering,2nd Semester.

His exams are going on and suddenly I got this message from him today, asking me to help him choose between Mass media and Mech Engineering.

He says he was under pressure from his parents to choose this field. I'm not surprised as my cousins and me are 2nd generation of engineers in the family, from both the sides.
So I can imagine his dilemma.

He has entrusted me with this and I hope to help him.
But I have no idea about mass media and have no friends who have done the course.

I will be grateful if anyone of you could help me with this.

@Levina It will take time for your cousin to get a career mark in Mass Media unless he has some connections. Patience is important. Even in India core Engineering jobs are available to those who are patient enough to wait for good opportunity.
One advantage of Mech is, he can do his future masters or go to jobs related to Mech, Marine, Aviation etc. He has a wide career option at his disposal. If he is good in Solidworks or ProE then rest assured he will have a good career in Mech.

Madame career in mechanical engineering lot better than mass media.A mechanical engineer can be software engineer, engineer defence services,Govt engineer as a administrative officer, mechanical engineer in auto industry including aviation and space lot more.A person mass media back ground doesn't have that much choice except TV n print media, govt I&PR department jobs etc.

Finish the job what he started and then follows his dream. His parents will be happy because of his Engineering degree and then they go for Mass communications and tell them i make your dream reality and now it is time to make mine.

First rule of life finish what you start.

Unless he isn't good with studies or his girlfriend is going for mass media he shouldn't have been considering this option.

Well if he is born & brought up outside and intends to stay outside then mass media or any other career that he's passionate is not a bad thing.
Even in engineering any stream if you are on top of it, you can still make a mark. But not being passionate or focused 100% will not lead to great results in long run.

He should simply do a skill & aptitude assessment instead of getting carried away by glamour & blitz. People can always jump from technical to non-technical career if they are socially savvy.

Frankly this could be a reason. I do doubt it. But since his exams are going on I don't want to distract him by asking these questions.,

And I'm sure we don't have any.

Thank you so much guyz.

True that.

I am not in favour of forcing career on children because its children who has to live with it for the rest of their lives and they will not excel in something which they don't enjoy while studying or working....so peace of mind and enjoying what you are doing is more important so he should go for mass media if its what he will enjoy as career

Absolutely no idea on mass media. Sounds pretty artsy so that is quite a different thing from my line of work/experience.

Mech engg to me is no brainer in choosing in comparison...he should persist with it unless his passion for engg is sapped or he never was interested in it in the first place. If he got into a premier engg college, it means he must have a good aptitude for it, nahi? But yah he must make this decision before he commits more time to engg study.

With mech engg as has been said, there are many diverse fields of further pursuit, both domestic and abroad...and also Indian economy is putting good premium on talented mech engineers, and its increasing with time as IT reaches saturation....and production/manufacturing scaling + RnD is turning into the new sunrise sector.

With mech engg you remain quite flexible in what job options you have too....because it shows you can compete and succeed at highest level of academics. It will probably use up more of his raw aptitude while still allowing creativity should he want to harness it (say in industrial design, 3D modelling, 3D printing, prototyping, university projects+competitions and a whole host of things he will be engaging with after he has finished his first couple years of basic core subjects). Or can go more theory based research with a masters, phd etc.. later if thats his cup of tea instead.

Basically its a bit of the solid "boring" stuff for 2 - 3 years till you hit the lode of cool interesting stuff in the 1 - 2 years at the end....so it can be bit of struggle for some people to get over that initial hump of foundation...some do drop out and go for more immediate creative pursuits. Mass media could very well have it...but I have no experience unfortunately.

an engineer can always become a media person, but a media person can never become a engineer

And these days its not important to have studied journalism to become a writer or a media person.

@Levina I agree with him. Go for Mech Engg.

I dropped Mechanical Engineering in 2nd Semester. It was forced upon me by my parents and I just couldnt bear it. (I come from a family of Engineers and nothing else is considered as quality education, quite primitive imo).

I transfered to Civil Engineering, which was easy as merit of Civil was low from mechanical back then in my uni (NUST, Islamabad). Equally boaring for a person who is not into engineering, but the added adventurism (working on huge projects, usually on outdoorsy, daring deputations) renders it bearable.

My advise is, if he is not into engineering and comes from a family that doesnot require him to financially contribute asap, let him follow his dream. He lives abroad, he ll make a carrier in anything he is passionate about. If engineering is a "must" switch to civil.

GoodLuck to your Cousin.

He says he was under pressure from his parents to choose this field.
I think this is where there could be a problem. Important thing is what your cousin wants to do.
Mass media and Engineering are chalk and cheese.
Mass media has great prospects and given his friendly personality (as you mentioned), wouldn't be a problem to make a name in that field.
As far as mechanical engineering goes, i would probably put the same question to him what Professor Subbarao put to me in 1997:
Do you like (passionately) Thermal engineering / Material Science / Stress Analysis?
If he thinks he is attracted to any one of those, safe to say Mechanical engineering is best course right now.
Best wishes to the kid! May he have a great future.

Hi, I believe though your cousin have done good in Academic, however he/she might be leaning towards mass communication. My advice will be, he should give full attention to mechanical engineering first and secure his/her future. And if by this time he/she has will, can go for part of time career in mass communication. It will keep him/her away from tensions while giving him/her good motivation. Thank you.
