Egypt Sidelines Rafale Jets For SU-35s; Claims Only Russian Jets Can Match US/Israeli War Planes

As reported earlier by EurAsian Times, despite boasting of awe-inspiring capabilities, the French origin jets didn’t see many buyers. Egypt was the first overseas contract for the Rafale jets, 14 years after it entered service in France.
Other than France and Egypt, only India and Qatar are using Rafale jets and that too in very limited numbers. The Rafale’s practical ceiling is lower than the J-16s and even in engine thrust, the Chinese J-16s and Russian Su-35s are far superior to the French combat aircraft.
Last year, Egypt had inked a deal worth US$ 2 billion to buy 24 Russian-made Su-35 fighter jets. After receiving 24 Rafale jets, Egypt has now received Russian Sukhoi Su-35, a first for Egypt.

The Sukhoi Su-35 fighters are capable of speeds of 2,800 kilometres per hour over an altitude of 11 kilometers, with a range of 4,500 kilometers. With the added external fuel tanks, it will allow the fighters to travel even further distance without having to refuel.
Their in-flight refuelling capabilities make them competitive with US F-35 fighter jets. It perceived as the ultimate variant of the big Russian fighter sometimes referred to as the “Super Flanker.” The Su-35 features thrust-vectoring engines and a brand-new mission suite, including a Tikhomirov NIIP N135 Irbis Passive Electronically Scanned Array (PESA) radar and a “glass” cockpit.

Major-General Nasr Salem, the former head of the Egyptian army’s reconnaissance department and professor of strategic studies at the Nasser Higher Military Academy said that the Egyptian acquisition of the Su-35 fighters, along with MiG-29Ms, Rafale fighters and F-16 Falcons, will ensure air control so as to protect Egyptian interests.
However, the US threat of sanctions now looms on Egypt. Washington objected to this deal last year when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper urged Egypt’s defence minister to cancel the deal. They warned of sanctions under the US’ Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) provision.

Experts believe that Egypt’s purchase may be aimed at diversifying its supply. Egypt has been long dependent on the US for its military equipment. Egypt received $1 billion in U.S. annual aid that it is largely required to spend on American gear.
Even after the aid was restored, the relations between the two nations soured. “Egypt has been so dependent on the U.S. that it is beginning to try to find some kind of contingency arrangement so that it can’t be levered by Congressional pressure to change their policies on dealing with dissidents,” said Anthony Cordesman, Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Salem has also echoed a similar sentiment questioning the US. “Why doesn’t the US supply Egypt with the F-35 fighters that it supplied Israel since it is objecting to the Russian Su-35 fighters deal?” he asked, adding that Egypt’s military seeks to procure equipment equal to that owned by Israel.

Su-35 and Rafale are not the same class. Su-35 is 21 meters. Rafale is 15 meters. Think cruiser and frigate. They serve different roles.

Trump’s policies really shook up the global order, and now everyone is heading for the exits. Considering Egypt’s alliance with France against Turkey, to lump France in with the US and sideline French jets for Russians one is very telling.

Western Hardware, no matter which specific country is falling out of favor unless a country is ready to toe the line 100%

For this reason, IMHO PAF will just double down on Project AZM and the JF-17, which will also pay off in terms of having a non-western/non-Russian option for the non-aligned countries to purchase. While Pakistan may not want to sell to the likes of North Korea, Venezuela, or Iran, the JF-17 Block III would be a potent aircraft for them to acquire if given the option. It’s value for money, especially if the RCS can be lowered with RAM and some improvements to shaping as has been done with the Rafale. China may create a work around or just give Pakistan a share of the profits if these counties purchase the jets.

More Likely, if the JF-17 can field a Meteor class missile (PL-15E), it may win sales in a place like Egypt, which would want to diversify from western platforms to not only modern Russian but to a Modern Sino-Pak System. Finally, one can not discount the high operating costs; the Egyptians would have been better off going for the Gripen. With the JF-17 Block III hopefully reaching Gripen level performance, the Egyptians will accept the shifting political winds and their finances and choose to buy Sino-Pak fighter.

Not only the ERBIS-E PESA radar with a 400km range, it also has the famous Russian OLS-35 IRST with a range of approximately 50-80 km so that once it's in that BVR range, it can shut down the ERBIS and not have it available to detect and help active missiles, but out of all the radars it has, the wing-mounted AESA radar is the most impressive element in this aircraft.

The infrared search and track fire control system, OLS-35 IRST, includes an infrared sensor, laser rangefinder, target designator and television camera. The accuracy of the laser rangefinder is 5m CEP (circular error probability), to a maximum range of 20km against airborne targets and 30km against ground targets. The OLS-35 is a high-performance system with ±90° azimuthal and +60°/-15° elevation coverage.

The system’s acquisition range against a non-afterburning target is 50km forwards and 90km rearward.

Not to mention the slew of killer weapons this amazing machine carries. Only 2 of them can ruin an entire air force's day and leave the rest of its aircraft naked without any AWACs protection as this thing is an AWACs killer. One with the Gibhiney ECM wingtip pods can locate, jam the enemy AWACs while the other launches Kh-31 CMs, even a pair of RVV-SD and probably just one R-37M would do the trick along with a couple of R-27ERs and other choices as well and it effectively eliminates the enemy's eyes and ears and more, and the rest are left at the mercy of fighters in support.

I think it’s all about what Egypt can get without any sort of restrictions to please some nations in the region. As if they look to Egypt in particular as their sole threat.

This Super Flanker monster was built by Russia to deter the F-22.. While building the SU-57 to counter it.. That is why it is so potent..

Ever since India acquired the Rafale it’s been called essentially junk by Pakistanis on PDF. No one wants it. No one uses it. But it was only a few years ago that Pakistan was thinking of purchasing the same aircraft.

The article is sourced from a dubious Russian publication which, not surprisingly, is pushing the Su-35 as a better product.

This is simply not true. For one thing, the Rafael's AESA radar is superior to the Su-35s Ibris-E PESA. All Russian fighters, including the Su-57, lack sufficient BVR capabilities. The Su-35 can definitely outperform the Rafael in WVR with its fancy thrust vectoring but that is about it.

The Rafale with the Meteor is about as good as it gets and not much out there to compete with that package, especially with SPECTRA in full mode. But your comment about Russian BVR hardly has any merits. The ERBIS-E with the RVV-SD is on par with the AIM-120C-7 and then there's a slew of missiles that are on the same range level as the AIM-120D like the R-37M which is actually more if I'm not mistaken and the R-27 in many of its forms is a super BVR missile. So the Russian systems can certainly carry their own.

If has, which one?
They can't talk to Su-35 and Rafale at the same time.

Yaa both Rafale and Sukhois have thr strong points but currently Rafale with meteor will bet first hit on Su-35... but can it survive F-35 most probably no
