Most air combats today take place WVR. Super Hornet shot AMRAAM at age old Su-22 and missed. Had to do it with AIM-9X. Modern fighter jets like Su-35 have such powerful EW BVR is essentially ineffective. Modern air combat mostly take place WVR. F-35 is JSF. Joint Strike Fighter is strike fighter, built for strike, air to air is secondary. F-35 has same role as Su-34. Many planes have F prefix like F-111, F-117, F-35 are not built for air to air, but rather for strike.

F35 is stealth whereas SU35 is 4.5 Gen at best so there is really no comparison. I was comparing fourth gen aircraft's in different countries. Only competition to F35 out there right now is Chinese built FC-31.

FC-31 is only in testing not in production yet. F-35 will get better with updates.

The F22 is a glorified F14 no more no less....prone to get pneumonia in humid areas.
