I don't know about the expected value of the deal, but indeed the number of required planes is high (100+ plans). On the other hand, Egypt currently is not seeking for assembly, the AOI ( Arab Organization Industry ) is seeking for production, to be specific, AOI planned to produce an air frame and import other parts, just like the K-8E case.



Allow me to clear a point; some brothers said that Egypt has no BVR missiles. In fact that is not correct; EAF F-16s carry AIM-7m while Egyptian Mirage-2000 carry super-530. Both are BVR missiles. But the problem is nether of them are ARHM, both are SARHM, so Egypt is looking for something like Aim-120, R-77 and SD-10.

On the other hand, all available radars for JF-17 has a limited range relatively ( about 100KM only) this meaning the plane can't use any missile with longer range with – let's say 80 km? This point needs some work in the plane nose- it is little small for larger and stronger radars




I will be honest with you, I support Jf-17 to replace Mig-21s in air defense role, Egypt look at the thunder as its effective solution to replace second line fighters. But the current thunder is not equal to 4++ planes, Egypt is also looking for first line fighter and there is a discussion with china for the J-10. Yet, thunder has great development potential and that what make Egypt interested in it especially that it will include cooperation with friendly nations like Pakistan and China



This is not how plans business is happening those days or even earlier. States with defense industrial base don’t just buy "full package" china in the best has no problem to give Egypt the right to assumable F-7s and F-6s. And even production under lisenes like K-8E. Even for other nations, you can take Brazil as example, it demanded technology transfer in the last bid and it was ok for all the bidders. India on the other hand put French equipment on its Russian plans.

Both Egypt and Pakistan has special history of cooperation in defense matters. The Egyptian pilots who fight 1973 war said that the PAF pilots were great help, spicily with there secret maneuver with Mig-21 which known as (Zero speed maneuver) which they pass it to the Egyptian pilots and were very effective Vs Israelis.

Also in 90s, Egypt provided PAF with Egyptian made F-16s spare parts when US cut the supply; in return PAF helped the EAF to upgrade its Mirage-5. I hope the deal will go on and be fruitful for both counties.

Egypt mulls JF-17 co-production and signs for more F-16s

According to Jane's Defence Weekly (Date Posted: 04-Mar-2010) Egypt is in talk with Pakistan on the co-production of the JF-17. If the deal goes through it will represent a major milestone for this program.

Cairo is in talks with Pakistan to begin joint production of JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft, Jane's understands from Egyptian defence industry sources.

Even as the talks continued regarding JF-17 assembly in Egypt, however, the US Department of Defense announced on 2 March that an initial contract worth some USD213 million had been finalised with Lockheed Martin for Egypt's procurement of additional F-16C/D multirole fighters. .. .. .. While the number of aircraft Egypt plans to acquire has not been revealed, the inclusion of local assembly in the deal suggests that the contract would be for at least 48 JF-17s.

Brigadier General Mohammed Abdul Azim, a senior official at the government-owned Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI), told Jane's on 3 March that negotiations were continuing and that a final contract announcement was not expected for several weeks.

Wow, if Egypt is such advanced in aviation technology and has such brotherly relations with Russia, then why even think about JF-17s let alone inducting them.

Egypt should have been by now an exporter of weapons and should not have been asking the US for more fighters, rather should have been rolling its own 4th generation fighter and researching their 5th gen stealth plane.

Am impressed by Egypt and its advanced military.

And one more thing, Pakistan has equal marketing rights in JF-17 program as it invested in the program also, that is why Egypt is talking to Pakistan for sale, but in the end the technologies if provided, would be both from Pakistan and China. majority would be from China, and some things would be from Pakistan.
