Egypt Buys Rafale and FREMM

Was there some sort of an RFP/tender process where multiple planes were considered, or did they just buy this without considering other planes?

I believe the MiG-35 was being considered (some say it still is being considered). Egypt was already set of the Rafale since they got to fly it in 2011 before the deal was blocked due to political instability. The F-15 was previously blocked by the US.

@Gabriel92

The F3R I believe since the AASM is coming with the weapons package and that's the tranche currently being built in France. Hopefully there's a deal for the Meteor as well in the coming years.

Spoke too soon.....

Egypt: the contract confirmed Rafale

In Defense , Combat Aircraft

The Elysee has just announced "The Rafale fighter won his first export contract . The signing will take place on February 16 in Cairo. I asked the defense minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, of sign on behalf of France " , said the head of state.

Dassault won the team's first export contract for its fighter jet, at 24 copies. Great news for the French fighter as well as for the defense budget! For military planning law (LPM) is based on assumptions of the Rafale export to lighten his order and thus smooth the financial burden of the program.

If the conditions of the contract are not yet fully known, the first three aircraft will be removed from the production line to the French army. So the first 3 Rafale products early this year will go directly to Cairo, reports a good source. Still, it will take some work to adapt "défrancisation" to bring them to the Egyptian standard.

This means that the Egyptian Rafale will be virtually the French standards.

Side arms, according to a close case, the demand of Cairo is about "French Suite" or Scalp cruise missiles, air to air missiles Meteor MBDA and Sagem 2ASM propelled bombs.

If Egypt has French Mirage fleet, Cairo is traditionally an American client. Still, Cairo has decided to diversify its arms purchases following the decsion of the US administration to limit its arms supplies with the arrival of Morsi government. While Paris is at the forefront in the fight against terrorism in the region including the Operation Barkhane.

President El Sisi is modernizing Egyptian Air force. Good move.

Anyone knows any Egyptian plan for a domestic fighter jet development?

I thought eqypt buying jf 17..was it a myth created by jf17 fanboys?

Hi,

I am glad that Egypt got what t wanted in the shortest period of time. Both the choices are excellent major weapons systems and when you save time in getting major weapons---that in itself is a force multiplier.

Mabrouk to our Egyptian brothers and sisters.

This is great news for the defense industry of France too. It was much needed to finally be able to sell the Rafale fighter aircraft to a foreign nation. I expected Qatar or India to become the first recipient nation though.

OK, if those planes purhased by gulf states money that is so good and congrats.

Any way each plane cost approximitly 185 million dollar the rest for the fremm.

Now India in bad situation their negociation will be hard.

There is no such thing as "Gulf Nations" to begin with. It's an inaccurate description. KSA is as much a "Khaliji nation" as Iraq is. The correct description for most of the GCC states would be Eastern Arabia which is an ancient historical region. One of the oldest.

Eastern Arabia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No, the GCC did not pay for this deal. Even if GCC were to help finance this deal partially then it would be a great thing regardless as Egypt is a brotherly neighboring Arab country, an ally and a stable Egypt means a stable GCC. You as a Iraqi have no clue about the close relations on almost all fields between for instance Hijaz and neighboring Egypt as you are located far from Egypt.

For a person that supposedly lived as a refugee in KSA for years you seem really hostile for some unknown reasons. If you got a problem with Kuwait or Qatar then sort that out.

What's the reality of Saudi funding this whole Rafale deal ?

@Gabriel92 Can you tell us what is difference between the f3r and the other tranches thanks.

It is the new variant of the Rafale, the F3R can carry the missile Meteor, the new pod that we are developing, and the RBE2 AESA radar.

The new F3R standard Rafale will include a new-generation laser targeting pod and major software changes. The upgrades will complement the enhanced Thales RBE2 active electronically-scanned array (AESA) radar which will allow the aircraft to deploy the MBDA Meteor Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), along with improvements to the aircraft’s Thales SPECTRA self-defence system and Mode-5/Mode-S-compatible Identification Friend or Foe interrogator/transponder.

Rafale indeed is a great aircraft. I do think though that 24 wont be enough.

Burst: how Egypt will pay?
Details of the contract that includes such Scalp cruise missiles.

The agreement between France and Egypt, to be formally signed earlier this week in Cairo, was 5.2 billion euros. This is, in fact, five different contracts signed with Dassault Aviation Rafale for MBDA for missiles, DCNS FREMM frigate for Sagem for A2SM bombs and Lacroix for different systems as decoys. The smallest of them is more than 100 million euros, says one in the entourage of the Minister of Defense.

Egypt will fund its own funds "a little less than 50%" of the total, more than 2 billion. For the rest, Egypt will borrow money to French banks at below-market rates for a country in the economic situation in Egypt. These loans will be fully guaranteed by Coface (French Insurance Company for Foreign Trade). The facilities are paid at the time of delivery.
