KARACHI: The Sindh Textbook Board has decided to dub Abdul Sattar Edhi, Malala Yousufzai and Arfa Abdul Kareem as national heroes in its textbooks for grades I to VI while ‘purging’ textbooks of references to “non-democratic heroes”.

The provincial education department’s special secretary, Syed Zakir Ali Shah, who holds an additional charge for the textbook board, confirmed the revisions to The Express Tribune.

“The elimination of the mention of non-democratic heroes was undertaken as per the democratic government’s policy that was reiterated by former education minister Pir Mazharul Haq and current education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro,” said Shah.

According to the textbook board technical affairs director, Yousuf Shaikh, the text that has been eliminated had been systematically included to ‘glorify’ the regimes of former dictators — General Muhammad Ziaul Haq and General Pervez Musharraf.

“A chapter on Abdul Sattar Edhi has been introduced in the general knowledge book for grade three, while chapters on Malala Yousufzai and Arfa Kareem have been added in the social studies book for class four,” said Shaikh. Meanwhile, chapters on Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto are going to be a part of grades V and VI, respectively.

“For the ease of students who have to carry multiple textbooks, the board has decided to publish the new textbooks in a single jacket, having multiple books for the relevant grade,” said Shaikh.

Controversial decision

The textbooks that had to be based on the recommendations of the 12-member advisory committee on textbook reforms will be made available in April for the start of the 2014-15 academic year. “The textbooks have been sent for publication after being approved by the committee members,” said Shaikh.

However, at least two committee members, when approached by The Express Tribune, denied any knowledge about the changes that the textbook board officials are claiming to have made. “I highly doubt that the members of the committee have unanimously endorsed these changes as I have not done so,” said Fateh Muhammad Burfat, a committee member and professor at University of Karachi’s sociology department. “We have not even finalised the draft for the revised curriculum yet.”

For Dr Burfat, the inclusion of a chapter on Malala Yousufzai will make the textbooks more controversial since it will invite a difference of opinion. “I do not hold anything against Malala but I strongly feel that the textbooks should reflect a national consensus rather than promoting controversies and disputes,” he said. “The culturally-rich Indus Valley, having a history of thousands of years, has an abundance of undisputed heroes, who can be a part of the textbooks.”

He explained that the very purpose of the committee was to remove the existing contradictions in the curriculum and to promote evidence-based knowledge rather than focus on controversies and mythology.

While Shaikh did concede that though there was some hesitancy and disagreement amongst committee members over the inclusion of a chapter on Malala in the grade four social studies book, the writer had ultimately convinced the committee members of its inclusion.

Welcome change

Meanwhile, Edhi Foundation spokesperson Anwar Kazmi was appreciative of the decision to include Edhi as a national hero. “What I should say is that it is better late than never,” he said. “Edhi Sahab has never shown an interest in personal publicity, but we at the foundation feel that he should have been introduced in the list of national heroes much earlier.”

For Kazmi, the inclusion of social activists and humanitarians as our national heroes will inspire the younger generation to aspire to similar ideals.

The Pak Studies education system is flawed in Pakistan it does not covers true history of Pakistan post independence

Infact our teacher told us end of the grade 9th or 10th.... what you learn in the books is hardly the truth , and he went on explain the Kashmir issue in depth with geographical context etc and many other things in that one final class of the year then he did the whole year reading the book

The book/ history is flawed

The studies does not covers the role of prominent leaders during the post Independence Era
The studies does not covers major Economic strategies that Pakistan used during 50's
or 60's and 70's or 80's and 90's
The studies does not focuses in Leaders like Fatima Ali Jinah or Liaqat Ali Khan in depth
There is no explaination of why a popular leader like Fatima Ali Jinah did not win elections
There is no focus on the History Monuments or cultural areas in Pakistan
There are no tours done by Schools to these historic areas in Pakistan due to lack of funds
There are no museum and historic artifact studies , and study of past artifacts or art forms
The studies does not covers the comparison of Military rule vs Democratic rule in detail
Pakistan studies talks about Trade that Pakistan does with other nations yet it does not teaches you how can one "Graduate" to be part of that economic cycle and become a trader
Pakistan studies does not covers topics about failure to create water Dam's in country and what were consequence of these actions.
Pakistan studies does not covers, any forign policy in depth and does not covers details of strategic alliances Pakistan has had since 1950's
Pakistan studies needs to cover the good work done in Musharaf's time with IT , Farming , Railways , and job creation. Just as it would cover the work during Ayub Khan's time.
A course or study that does not teaches importance of Mushraf's work 2000-2010 is missing alot
Pakistan studies does not covers topics of regional politics and impact on governments
Pakistan studies does not covers , judicial systems in regions of Pakistan
Pakistan studies need to focus on Provincian development and funding over decades and literacy rates
Pakistan studies need to teach students about different mode of Government that have been tried in last 50 years in Pakistan, and compare that with "statistics from world sources" on GDP growth etc

a) Military
b) Democracy
c) Socialism
d) Communism etc
f) Capitalism

Pakistan Studies need to cover , Major Military battles and tactics used and incorporate these into studies for Youth. And detail the shaheed's of nation

There are no chapters on East Pakistan, and its importance in past to economy etc

Pakistan studies need to focus on cultural langueages and areas of Pakistan

There is no detailed analysis of economy and benefits to citizens during Military or Civilian rules and what areas of society suffer in either case etc

Most of the criculum in books is "butchered"

True. Politicians have always done there part in destroying the economy of our country and they are continuing to do so as well. This my friend is one other proof!

Well Malala is a wonderful Youth , and future role model , and Mr Adhi sahib is another servant of people.
Their place in education books is legitimate However the education has to be more "complete"

Malala is no hero at all... this bitch name should not be included in text books of our childrens... she is good enough for her western masters and there books

Have respect for a little girl, who was the target of the mullah led idiots. What happened afterwards is a function of the not just her 'supposed' western masters, but also your media.

Edhi and Malala deserve place in the history books but not zulfiqar bhutto, benazir and arfa karim.
