The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to grant voting rights to overseas Pakistanis, Express News reported on Tuesday.
The decision will allow 3.7 million Pakistanis living abroad to vote.
The debate on whether overseas Pakistanis should be allowed to participate in Pakistan’s elections gained steam after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan moved the Supreme Court, seeking that those living abroad should be permitted to vote.
In a meeting of the commission on Tuesday, which was chaired by ECP Secretary Ishtiak Ahmed Khan, participants decided that names of overseas Pakistanis will be registered in the electoral rolls, DawnNews reported. Participants also discussed the mechanism for voting, including the option of postal balloting and setting up polling booths at Pakistani embassies. A voting mechanism has yet to be decided.

Only 3.7 million Pakistanis living abroad? I thought the figure was around 6 million..

Wiki says There are approximately 4.2 million Pakistanis living abroad but there won't be more than 1.4-1.8 million Pakistanis who would be in the age of vetoing. On average a Pakistani family has 3 kids who may not have reached the age to vote. But even if this number is 1.4 or just 0.14 millions, its right of Pakistanis to Vote as long as they hold National ID and Pakistani Passport.

Although I welcome this step, this approach could be prone to corruption as Alians might be looking to cast vote. You cannot trust PPP/MQM/PMLN even on their deathbed.

@figures: It all depends upon how many pakistanis (the people carrying Pakistani Passport) living aboard, so I think the figure must be far less then given figures.

@Topic: Good or Bad news this all depends upon implementation, and I don't trust current government.

Imran khan's future looks more brighter, we all know that almost all oversea Pakistanis like him.

PTI would be happy. I am also happy with this decision.

Imran Khan has vote of 9+ part of my family, +5 more I know :)

I am also planning to vote PTI. Let's hope I don't have to fly out to some big city. I hope they allow voting by mail.

Also, this is mostly a symbolic vote. Even of ALL overseas Pakistanis vote it will not move the needle an inch because the numbers are insignificant and even those numbers are going to be split between 300+ direct constituencies. Rigging will not matter!

BTW, some of you Pakistani bloggers here need be a little less cynical and put some faith in Pakistan's 'system'. Today the NA in Pakistan passed a historic 20th Const. Amend. Bill which dictates neutral caretaker setup to oversee elections. NEVER in the history of Pakistan the politicians have shown such maturity and accommodation as in the present Parliament. Yes, I know the 'corruption' part but Pakistanis are not unique in the world. Ask any Indian here.

But you are only good at shooting down everything just because of your visceral hatred of Zardari. Sad.

Just wondering the missions in UAE cannot handle the normal daily rush of people coming for Consulate related transactions how can they manage the elections as it will be on a fixed day and time for all of the Pakistani community in UAE.

In one day only 400 transactions are accepted at the Dubai consulate what about the 100,000s eligible to vote on a specific day and time?

That's very good. Lots of votes for PTI in my family, friends and acquaintance circle.
