Geneva: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scored a big win for India's bid to be admitted to the Nuclear Suppliers Group or NSG, a 48-member club of nuclear trading nations.

After a meeting with Mr Modi in Geneva today, Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann, said, "We have promised India support in its efforts to become a member of NSG."

India has been shut out for decades from the NSG because of its refusal to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty while it developed its nuclear technology.

In the meantime, a civil nuclear agreement with the United States, signed in 2008, has given India access to foreign suppliers without giving up its arms or slowing down its nuclear programme.

This week, when Prime Minister Modi meets President Barack Obama for the seventh time in two years, they will discuss India's route to the NSG. President Obama and his administration officials have said that they backed India's desire to join the group, but the idea faces resistance from China.

The Prime Minister, who is visiting a series of countries currently, added Mexico and Switzerland to his itinerary because both had expressed reservations about India being included in the NSG after Delhi applied for membership last month.

Later this month, a big session of the NSG will take place in Seoul and the PM wanted to ensure that India's lobbying was handled at the top level before its application is reviewed in detail.
Even one country's vote against India will block its bid.

Lets wait for the Seoul meet.

I am afraid it MIGHT be premature. Its likely to take another turn of the cycle before India is in the NSG

In order to get India in, they will amend the bye laws, just like the Bush administration did. They want India in NSG come what may.

Not very optimistic about this. But if only 'one' country is against India's application, it will be a good development, as that country will be singled out.

The good thing is China is looking for "others" to block India's bid. China was speechless when President Pranab pointed out that historically India has never opposed China's bid in any organisation, even for UNSC.

I think China will succeed for this year. But maybe not in the next year.

Man. US lobbying is the powerful thing I have ever seen. With Russia on our side, its China which will be "isolated" if it votes against.

India should lobby to block China's entry into MTCR, if China blocks India's entry into NSG

China wants to be isolated and then finally agree for Indian member ship to NSG, so that Pakistan feels china tried its best (Remember NSG Waiver). China has lot to gain from India and cannot stop India's growth. Membership to associations reflect the relations between nations and not other way. India has always been non aligned and china will want India to remain neutral in the coming wars. Also, there is lot of economic gain to be had. India is watching, China better behave.

I dont think China is desperate to enter MTCR. But I believe India's strategy is quite clear. Its to become member of all "important" multileteral organisation and finally corner China into accepting an Indian seat at UNSC. This may take few year if not a decade.

Again China will not block India's admission on its own. It will try to persuade other members to block it on its behalf. If it does not find volunteers China will give in. Maybe it will get an US assurance that it will support upto 8 chasma reactors according to its first MoU with Pakistan.
Remember insignificant members like NZ and Austria blocking Indian waiver at IAEA?

India is fast becoming the blue eyed boy of the west. Gaining favors it could not even dream of earlier when it was a cold war ally to the Russians. It is now being seen as a liberal bulwark against Islam when it is barely liberal. This positive attention India is getting is bound to hurt Pakistan which is now without allies other than China. I think we should take some solid steps to improve the image of Pakistan internationally.

If India becomes a member of NSG than there is no reason for them to celebrate because the actual credit of getting them in credit goes to the west and not to them at all.

Agree totally

So this is how you are going to console yourself :-):-):-)
