Done. PM Modi Gets Swiss 'Yes' For India In NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group)

India is fast becoming the blue eyed boy of the west. Gaining favors it could not even dream of earlier when it was a cold war ally to the Russians. It is now being seen as a liberal bulwark against Islam when it is barely liberal. This positive attention India is getting is bound to hurt Pakistan which is now without allies other than China. I think we should take some solid steps to improve the image of Pakistan internationally.

Does Pakistan produce a lot of whatever it is that you smoke?

DOHA: Indian engineering and construction giant, Larsen & Toubro, has won the country’s first contract to build a venue for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, organisers announced on Monday.

Along with local contractor, Al Balagh, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) will build Al-Rayyan Stadium, a 40,000-seater venue to the west of the capital Doha, Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy announced.

The announcement comes a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a two-day trip to Qatar, and after the two governments signed seven agreements covering areas including investment.

Jens Huckfeldt, L&T’s chief executive in Qatar, said securing the multi-million dollar contract was “a matter of intense pride for us”.

Al-Rayyan will be used for matches up to the quarter-finals stage in 2022.

Qatar is spending as much as $10 billion on World Cup stadium construction, Hassan al-Thawadi, head of the Supreme Committee, said last month.

Organisers have estimated the total cost of hosting the tournament at $30 billion.

All steps begin with acting within.

Geneva: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has scored a big win for India's bid to be admitted to the Nuclear Suppliers Group or NSG, a 48-member club of nuclear trading nations.

After a meeting with Mr Modi in Geneva today, Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann, said, "We have promised India support in its efforts to become a member of NSG."

India has been shut out for decades from the NSG because of its refusal to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty while it developed its nuclear technology.

In the meantime, a civil nuclear agreement with the United States, signed in 2008, has given India access to foreign suppliers without giving up its arms or slowing down its nuclear programme.

This week, when Prime Minister Modi meets President Barack Obama for the seventh time in two years, they will discuss India's route to the NSG. President Obama and his administration officials have said that they backed India's desire to join the group, but the idea faces resistance from China.

The Prime Minister, who is visiting a series of countries currently, added Mexico and Switzerland to his itinerary because both had expressed reservations about India being included in the NSG after Delhi applied for membership last month.

Later this month, a big session of the NSG will take place in Seoul and the PM wanted to ensure that India's lobbying was handled at the top level before its application is reviewed in detail.
Even one country's vote against India will block its bid.

Lets wait for the Seoul meet.
The good thing is China is looking for "others" to block India's bid. China was speechless when President Pranab pointed out that historically India has never opposed China's bid in any organisation, even for UNSC.

I think China will succeed for this year. But maybe not in the next year.

Man. US lobbying is the powerful thing I have ever seen. With Russia on our side, its China which will be "isolated" if it votes against.

There are 48 member nations in the NSG, the entrant of a new member nation requires unanimous approval- just one vote against India will ensure India is kept out.

Interestingly, 2 nations that had been opposed to India's entry into the NSG are, wouldn't you know it......Switzerland and Mexico. Modi has gone to Swtizerland and somehow extracted their support for India's bid and he will be visiting Mexico in a few days so let's see if he can make it 2 for 2. As the bloc opposing India gets whittled down one by one the last one standing, I suspect, will be China and it may take a combined effort from Modi and Obama to get them on side but the Chinese themselves to not like to be internationally iosolated in these affairs so are more likely to concede and ditch their nonsensical "Pakistan must get membership too" stance once it is the last opponent.

It's not a done deal at all but the stars are alligning...

How Pakistan and India are perceived in the West are mutually exclusive. Pakistan is not disliked because India is liked but because of what activities it engages in, the West are not blind to this and thus judge harshly. Pakistan needs to stop its obsession with India to truly break free from the zero sum game they have been playing for decades.

Think about this, Modi has visited Arab countries (UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia), Iran, will visit Israel shortly and is a regular visitor to the US. Very, very few leaders/nations in the world could claim to have this kind of masterful engagement and no other major nation barring China perhaps.

I guess you haven't seen what we've been doing in the South China Sea. :P

The opinions of foreigners do not ever take precedence over our national interests.

If you really want it you'll have to give something in return.

Mod and team did everything they could... Very aggressive diplomacy indeed. Good to see US doing well to pursue many other great free minded countries in the group. China has two options. Get real and get a life with benefits from India. As we already hinted recently 'India never opposed China's entry into worldwide organizations historically' it means lots of things. If India would enter missile control regime before China then it means we could do anything and everything to stop stop by all means. China may not be desperate but it really need this to happen which could give massive respect for their technologies regarding drones and missiles... With US on our side Russia on our side India's position is becoming increasingly popular and robust.

Our position on SCS recently should be our new diplomacy. India could make hell for China in years to come.

Hope China sense the change and change itself. Leave it's arrogant iron brother behind and move forward

.
Reiterate that there is absolutely no reason for the Indians to celebrate.

If there is a country in the world which is the greatest beneficiary of 9/11 than its India. West has opened up its flood gates in terms of political, economical, financial and even in nuclear field.
