Law enforcement agencies and investigators have widened the ongoing crackdown against trolls who have been targetting the Pakistan Army allegedly on the behest of a political party.
At least 25 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered so far and 135 notices have been served on various accused, SAMAA TV’s Investigation Unit reported on Wednesday.
In a crucial development, the authorities have sought permission from the interior ministry for the arrest of a former Pakistan Army major. An FIR against Major (retired) Nadeem Dar has already been registered in Rawalpindi.

Profiles of at least 250 suspects who attacked the defense institution have been compiled so far, according to SAMAA Investigation Unit.
The troll campaign began in recent months but took an ugly turn after a Pakistan Army helicopter crashed in Balochistan’s Lasbela on August 1. All six on board including Corp Commander Quetta Lt. General Sarfraz Ali were martyred.

Notices and FIRs

As the law enforcement agencies sprang to action against the anti-army trolls, notices were served on multiple people.
Adil Farooq from Rawalpindi was sent 30 notices and asked to appear before investigators.
Lahore’s Abdul Shakoor was sent 25 notices and an FIR was registered against him.
Kashif Saeed, another alleged troll from Islamabad, was sent 16 notices while Ali Faisal from Gujranwala was also asked to appear before the investigating officers.
At least 15 notices were served on suspects in Karachi and 20 in Peshawar.
Most of the FIRs have been registered in Gujranwala.
At least four cases each were registered in Islamabad and Rawalpindi and three cases were lodged in Lahore.
The federal interior ministry formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on August 8 to probe the troll campaign. The team mainly comprises FIA officials but one senior officer each from the ISI and IB has also joined it.
The investigators have not only identified trolls within the country but also revealed that some Twitter accounts were operated from India.

Arrest of Ex-major sought

Authorities are seeking the arrest of Major (retired) Nadeem Dar in relation to the troll campaign.
An FIR was registered against him with permission from the competent authorities. Now, investigators have sought permission from the interior ministry for the arrest.

  • Sources says investigations showed 17 Indian accounts were involved in social media campaign.
  • Say campaign was launched against Pakistan Army by workers of a political party.
  • People who led the campaign will also be arrested after investigating the individuals involved in the propaganda.
The government has decided to arrest all the people behind the negative propaganda against Lasbela helicopter crash on social media, sources privy to the investigation told Geo News on the condition of anonymity.

Sources said that the people who led the campaign will also be arrested after investigating the individuals involved in the propaganda. They added that the investigations have shown that Indian accounts were also involved in the social media campaign.

They added that a campaign was launched against the Pakistan Army by the workers of a political party and Indian social media accounts actively participated in it. The investigations show that at least 17 Indian accounts were linked to the campaign.

FIA tasked to probe malicious social media campaign

Last week, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing registered a case and launched an investigation into the malicious social media propaganda following the martyrdom of army officers in the Balochistan helicopter crash.

A joint investigation team headed by Additional Director General Cybercrimes Muhammad Jafar is carrying out the probe.

The investigation team includes Director Operations Waqar Chauhan, Additional Director Ayaz, and Assistant Director Imran Haider, sources told Geo News.

The development follows after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif characterised the campaign as "horrifying".

"The social media campaign belittling and ridiculing the sacrifices of our martyrs was horrifying," he wrote in a message on Twitter.

The prime minister attributed such vitriol to "self-righteous political narratives".

"They poison the minds of the youth and weaponise hate speech. Which way are we headed?" he asked.

Meanwhile, in a conversation on Geo News programme "Naya Pakistan", the Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations Major General Babar Iftikhar condemned the negative social media propaganda.

"The way this happens on social media, we have to look into this and reject such elements involved in it," he said.

"We can do this collectively. That's why we issued a press release as it was important to highlight this matter. This has to be condemned at every level."

The press release issued by the ISPR stated: "We have been distressed since the accident on August 1. The propaganda has caused immense pain, particularly to the families of the martyrs," he said.

Emphasising that this should not happen, Maj Gen Iftikhar said that elements spreading negative propaganda and rumours should be rejected.

“Insensitive behaviour is unacceptable and should be condemned on every platform,” he asserted, adding that the Pakistan Army is grateful to the nation which continues to stand by them and the martyrs.

The helicopter crash

A Pakistan Army helicopter had gone missing on August 1 in Balochistan during flood relief efforts and was reported crashed by the ISPR the following day. It was found near Musa Goth in the Lasbela district. Six military personnel were martyred.

The military chopper had gone missing as it was en route from Quetta to Karachi at around 5:30pm.

The personnel in the chopper were overseeing flood relief efforts in the southwest of the country.
Rather than investigating how the helcopter crahsed they r investigating who commented on crash ... They r crack

You haven't experienced even an inch of what it feels like to live under the nose of India and Israel woh tho tumhare jeso ki tatti nikal dete hai beta. Everyone and their chachu are trying to score emotional brownie points. This jahil Qoum is equally to be blamed for Pakistan's miseries.
that somehow make this all okay. thank you. phew

Am not here to start a harangue but I do agree with certain points of yours the leadership will and should be criticised if not performing, not the average sentry.

sir, I generally tend to agree with you. But this is wishful thinking. It should be this way only. But, people are irrational. Why do you think the people in FATA etc harass soldiers, because they don't find the generals walking the streets. the soldiers, to them, are the representation of their perceived oppressors. so can you really expect them the hug and garland the soldiers when they have grievances against the general that the soldier obey (rightly so)

Don't you think the generals should be thinking how he should ruin about a soldier's dignity among the public that so loved him? Why is the onus on the dumb irrational public and not the highly educated and savvy general?

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday alleged that a “negative” social media campaign targeting the tragic incident of an army helicopter crash amid flood relief operations in Balochistan earlier this month was a “joint project” of the PTI and India against the Pakistan Army.

After the chopper crash in Lasbela, a section of social media activists and certain political zealots launched an abhorrent and unacceptable online campaign to advance their personal and political malice, which drew a strong reaction from people belonging to all walks of life, political leadership and the state institutions.

The ruling coalition blames the PTI’s social media team for launching the smear campaign at the behest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

Addressing the issue at a press conference in Islamabad today, Asif said 18 Indian accounts were found to be involved in the social media campaign.

“Their channels say, ‘the work Imran Khan is doing for us, even if we had spent billions of dollars we would not have been able to create the kind of network to safeguard and advance India’s interests in Pakistan as how the PTI and its leader is doing,’” the defence minister said.

Asif claimed that while the nation was mourning the Lasbela helicopter tragedy, the PTI’s social media accounts, with the help of Indian and other offshore social media accounts, were running a “smear campaign” against the country and the army.

Referring to reports run in the media a day ago, Asif said an investigation into the campaign had found that 529 Pakistani accounts, 18 Indian accounts and 33 accounts from other countries were involved.

“This investigation is reaching its conclusion,” he said, adding that action would be taken on the results in accordance with the law and the Constitution.

He said the matter had shamed the entire nation before the martyrs’ families that “there are such people found among us who can fall so low for their political motives.”

Asif said the data was “confirmed and verified” and more revelations would be forthcoming.

The defence minister termed the PTI’s alleged campaign, party leader Shahbaz Gill’s comments regarding the army and subsequent claims of him being tortured in police custody as “diversion” tactics to remove attention from the verdict in the foreign funding case.

Asif said that Imran had subsequently distanced himself from Gill’s comments when he saw that the move had ended up hurting the PTI instead of accruing any dividend or political benefit.

The defence minister called for this process of diversionary tactics to be “stopped immediately”.

Let's accept hypocrisy from Pro-IK, Pro-PTI who were also Pro-Army, including I.
We were happy when Asad Ali Toor, Mohsin Baig, Mutiullah Jan, andany anti-Estaishment journalists and activists were hounded and tortured by agencies. Now same has happened to Imran Riaz Khan, Sami Ibrahim, Arshad Sharif, and Shabaz Gill is tortured.
Moral of the story, never believe establishment and agencies and stand for fairness and justice for all even for opponents.

Sure we saw how ordinary PMLN supporters were rounded and totured like its happening now

And geo had it license reworked for months too

Sure the PTI made wrong decisions and sided with establishment when they shouldn’t have.

The proverbial veil is off.

Never were the establishment and generals on the wrong side. Every Pakistani you meet is on an establishment cursing spree. A good thing as there are no holy cows.

Respect is mutual. Pakistani awam no longer respects army because army no longer respects awam.
You and all will respect if there's a war tomorrow.

When Bajwa group started cutting pensions of veterans, you should have realized Pakistan Army has been hijacked.

Even warriors that have fought in actual wars no longer respect PA under the leadership of Mir Bajwa.
This isnt a new thing. This always happened. Especially. in musharraf days when retired folks were not allowed to question WoT on state media. and even before..its a discplinary action nothing against any one in particular.. There was an instruction for both serving and retired to have neutral pov while appearing on media.

Shabaz gill said what? People need to hold COAS accountable? If you can over throw a elected government, refuse to hold elections when majority of the country is demanding it, why can’t chain of command be challenged?

ZIA didn’t plant his own bomb, someone from establishment did it. When Nawaz sacked Musharraf ( he was legally within his right to do that) Musharraf went against chain of command and sacked Nawaz. When Musharraf launched Kargil without approval he went against chain of command.

COAS is not a prophet that he can’t be challenged. He will destroy the country and than retire in a western country while millions of Pakistani will continue to suffer. Army must stand united against this traitor and appoint a new COAS. Army personal must realize majority of them and their families can’t go to other countries after they retire. Pakistan is all they got, fight for the country not follow “chain of command” when it has been violated by these generals them self.
