Russia has launched its first air strikes in Syria. But they may have missed their targets!

On Sept. 30, the Russian Air Force contingent based at Latakia launched its first air strikes against targets in Syria following the approval from the Russian Duma.

According to the Russian MoD, that has been quite active on Social Media all day, the air strikes targeted 8 ISIS targets in Syria and involved 20 sorties flown by Russian aircraft and hit “military materiel, communication centres, ammunition and fuel depots of IS.

Now take a look at the following video, that shows some of the targets being attacked by the Russian warplanes.

Although we are unable to ID the weapons used against these targets it looks like that either the targeting pod was aiming somewhere else or the attack missed its target: the first part of the footage (most probably filmed from a targeting pod or maybe a drone) shows shrapnels from a bomb possibly exploded south of the target; the second part shows the same target and other shrapnels, but you can also clearly see the blast of a bomb at the bottom of the scene; the third one shows bombs (2 or 3) seemingly missing their target by several meters.

According to some photographs on Twitter, Su-24M2 may have been involved in the first air strikes in the area of Homs. And, as proved by the footage released by the Russian MoD, they probably used unguided bombs….

So Russia is using unguided weaponry. What could possibly go wrong?

. .
And how can they match against F35 and F22?

.
If the Russians continue to use unguided weapons their air campaign will be about as effective as Assads barrel bomb strategy. Also look for increased reports of dead civilians.

How do you now it is unguided bombs?

The video we all see could be possibly from the drone therefore we can not see where the bombs have actually landed or what their targets actually were. The video mostly shows shrapnel flying after the hit.

Looks like a fuel depot got hit.

Not the same place, one is a village and other is a city.

The bombs are unguided. Guided weapons are not released in a salvo and are usually of smaller warheads. These were heavy ones used in a salvo to compensate for the lack of accuracy of these dumb bombs. The brave pilot is literally risking his life each time he dives for those targets. If something happens and he gets captured by those cannibal zombies on the ground, then you know what is going to happen to him.

As for the video, this is from a drone circling overhead. This is a relatively new tactic, being used by forces that do not have effective drone launched smart weapons. The drone is used for scouting the targets and for post-hit analysis and the hits are actually done by manned aircrafts. Even Iran has been using this tactic.

Surely Russia has better weapons in their arsenal.

Maybe. There is a difference between having a weapon in an R&D lab and having produced and deployed a large enough of them along with training of the troops to use them.

There is no doubt that Russia has technological know how to develop more sophisticated weapons, perhaps not as sophisticated as Western ones but pretty decent cost effective things. But what we are seeing in the video is that they are dumb munitions and the planes are Su-24 which are from Soviet times.

But as long as they get the job done, I say hurray to them. Because what is the use to have the most sophisticated weapons and instead be supporting "moderate rebels".

Definitely not the same place. Russian airstrikes were reported officially in 4 places. Not sure what other reports are suggesting. Its only been a day, we will see more activity in the coming weeks hopefully.

I am not sure but anything close to the + sign was destroyed I prefer not to be standing on the + sign in that video
