Dhaka road to be named after Indira

Indhira Gandhi did far better thing than Hasina or Khaleda. If their name could be inscribed on everything from toilet paper to space craft why cant we at least name a road after Indhira??

My 3 cents.. one extra for AL-Zakir.. LOL

Personally, I have no comment on anybody's wish to rename any road after Indira Gandhi. In Bangladesh specifically; it is the prerogative of the people of your country if you wish to do so, considering the Indira Gandhi connection (in some way) to the Liberation.

But its an interesting coincidence that the South Asian region has some kind of peculiar fondness of naming roads after personalities; when names like Gulmohar Road and Palm Avenue would be good enough. Then there is some added significance attached to the name given that means everything or nothing; depending on how one sees it.

A case in point is in Calcutta: when the Communists came to power there; they promptly renamed one of the most important roads there as Karl Marx Sarani and after that took particular care to rename the road passing the US Consulate as Ho Chi Minh Sarani. After all, the Viet Nam war was on!

Apart from causing some faint amusement, there was no other effect.

The Americans of course believe that they saved France, Europe and the world. The Soviets lost 25 million men and probably have the loudest shouting rights to winning the war. In their own way - they are all right and in their own way, they are denying credit to their allies. India, Bangladesh are in a similar boat - both want credit but neither could have done it without the other.

Let alone thanking or giving credit, these guys are going to the other extreme by accusing the Indians of looting and destroying their economy. They need a valid reason for hating us. Us being Hindu majority is good enough for them but it looks uncivilized. So they are creating new and more ridiculous reasons.

This is the very reason why I always preferred the US style of naming their streets in some cities. For smaller towns, use street A, B, C, D .... for bigger cities use 1st St., 2nd St., 3rd St. and so on.

When will the subcontinent get away from this extra burden of naming cities after political leaders and riding through all sorts of controversies.

Anyway it is not a matter of whether a road will be named after Pakistani or any Bhartis... but the issue is these is a completely political propaganda to raise the status of the bhartis in front of bangladeshis... where the image of the bhartis is all time low... when there is already a road named after Indira in dhaka newar national assembly or jatiya sangsad ... then what is the need to name another road by the same person in the diplomatic area!!!

Are you not aware of Indira Road in Dhaka? Why stop there? Why not rename Bd to mujib desh or bangabandu desh and then rename dhaka to indira city. While you at it, rename all the city and tdown after the Hindu solder that got killed by Pakistan army.
