KARACHI (By Amar Guriro ) Influential Hindus of northern Sindh began threatening local Sikh community of dire consequences if they pursue the blasphemy case, in which a close relative of Hindu Panchayat chieftain had torn the Holy Guru Granth Sahib into pieces.
Some local extremist Hindus on June 18, 2013 tore the most sacred book of Sikh religion, in Pano Aqil town in Sukkur district and despite passage of more than two weeks, police have not registered the case due to the influence of a Hindu parliamentarian of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). The incident happened at a local Hindu temple of Nanak (Guru Nanak) Panthi Hindus.
The news broke like wildfire and Sikhs from different cities of northern Sindh started gathering in the town to protest against the incident. They rushed to the local police station to lodge an FIR, but police refused.
The influential Hindus are threatening us to dissuade us from registering an FIR and resolve the matter at community level without involving police, but we will not accept it. We request the government to intervene, register a case and arrest the actual culprit, said local Sikh, Jai Ram Singh, while talking to Daily Times over the telephone.
He said that apart from threats, also they hired a poor local Hindu, who was working as a servant at the Hindu temple, where the incident took place, just to save the actual culprit.
Local Sikhs, who are a minority within minorities, are afraid, as police, minority leaders, parliamentarians and government authorities are not listening to them. Even the local journalists were not ready to report their story under the influence of the powerful Hindu businessmen.
Case history: The current desecration case can be traced back to an incident in March 2013, when a Hindu religious leader at a temple of Nanak Panthi Hindus in Shikarpur, Samadhiyan Waro Sadho, wrote a Hindu religious symbol on Guru Granth Sahib and also his own signature.
He took photos of his signature and Hindu symbol on Guru Granth Sahibs page and posted on social media site Facebook. After several shares, it reached Sindhi Sikhs, who considered it disrespectful towards the holy book. Following which, they rushed to the Hindu temple in Shikarpur and talked to local Hindu religious leader, who after a long debate accepted it was a mistake and apologised.
As the Hindu leader in Shikarpur is the spiritual leader of local Hindus in Pano Aqil, they decided to take revenge of the incident, forcing a local Sikh leader to apologise to Hindus, while threatening that they will tear the holy book, said a local Sikh of the town.
Local Sikhs are afraid to get their name mentioned in the story.
Jai Ram Singh said, It was a local Hindu of Pano Aqil, Sudham Chand, son of Daya Ram, who works as a health technician at Mehran Maternity Home, and he has threatened us that he will tear the holy book.
Sudham Chand, nephew of Panchayat leader Dr Maha Nand, a close relative of PPP MPA Lal Chand Ukrani. Thus the local Hindus with Panchyat leader and MPAs help forced police authorities not to lodge FIR against the real culprit and instead got Mahesh Kumar, temple help arrested.
However, PPP MPA Lal Chand Ukrani has already denied the allegation and said he is not involved in the case.
On Contact, SHO Pano Aqil Barkat Korai admitted that he has arrested Mahesh Kumar on request of local Hindus. We have not register the case on request of local Hindus as they are going to resolve it on community level, as it their internal matter, he said.
The police authorities were so pressurised that even DIG Sukkur and SSP Sukkur were not willing to issue their statement.
Sikhs are not ready to accept Mahesh Kumar as the culprit of the case and demand government to arrest the actual person who is responsible.
Our Sikh delegation met Mahesh in Pano Aqil, to try and understand why he did so, but he is so scared and unwilling to say anything. We still believe he is innocent and is being sacrificed by local Hindus, the actual culprit is Sudham Chand, so we demand his arrest, said Pakistan Sikh Council Chairman Sardar Ramesh Singh.
Former minority parliamentarian and PML-N leader Javed Michael condemned the incident and demanded government to arrest the actual culprit. For us, all the holy books of every religion must be sacred, but some extremists within minorities have started creating chaos, which is unacceptable. This is not the first such incident, a similar incident happened in Shikarpur and if at that time police had arrested the culprits, it may not have repeated, said Michael.
He said that police must lodge the FIR and investigate the case. There is a law in Pakistan and we demand to launch FIR under section 295-A and 295-B of Constitution of Pakistan to punish the real culprits, he demanded.
