The pictures and the accounts of
@Darius77 shared here show a truly horrifying image of India! I too have noticed, from the travel videos, even very poor African countries have people with better sense of personal hygiene. But India is a very large economy, unlike those countries and so should be able to provide some basic facilities to its population.
My old experience in India from the two trips I made decades ago was not something which would want me to prioritize travel to India over most other countries of the world. A few memories:
In a small town's main market/center area, pigs and piglets literally coated wet with dripping water/urine and feces were roaming freely in between crowds of people while at the same time vendors were selling snacks in open carts. The animals would show up all of a sudden and if you are not careful would brush against you as they pass by. In the same town, in a house, the toilet was sort of an out-house where, when you did your 'business', pigs would appear a few feet below you to eat your crap! OMG, I was so horrified when I first saw that! There was supposed to be a janitor lady who would carry off the crap periodically to wherever but the pigs were her free co-workers
Then there was a strange custom of drinking water in public places: Apparently it was okay to drink tea out of a glass container but never from a steel container. Sometimes someone would pour water into your cupped hands so you quench your thirst.
Will I ever go back to India? Yes, but only to mountain regions like Sikkim.
