So finally our own heavy weight torpedo Varunastra is being inducted into navy tomorrow.
PS: Varunastra has a range of 30 km and speed of 40+ knots...... surely nothing like Black Shark or SeaHake but still good.

GoI is silently pushing all projects with aggressive attitude .
Good development
Some months ago SJha had tweeted that a team of navy had green lighted the heavy water torpedo. Also they were impressed with the light weight one.
Along with this Coast Guard had given green signal for getting improved INSAS and Indian made AK47 rifles.
If heavy water torpedo news is correct, other two should also be.

BRIEF NOTE ON VARUNASTRA TORPEDO
Varunastra is the first indigenous state-of -the-art heavy weight ship launched anti-submarine electric torpedo designed and developed by Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a premier lab of DRDO. It is capable of targeting quiet and stealthy submarines, both in deep and littoral waters in intense countermeasure environment.
Varunastra has been designed with latest technologies such as high speed and long endurance propulsion, software driven intelligence, conformal array acoustic homing with wide look angle and advanced digital signal processing. It is also having advanced autonomous guidance algorithms with low drift navigational aids, insensitive warhead which can operate in various combat scenarios.
Varunastra exercise variant has integrated instrumentation system for recording all the dynamic parameters of the weapon, redundancy in recovery aids in case of emergency shut down or malfunction. It has GPS based locating aid, a unique feature in contemporary torpedoes in the world. Varunastra is extensively tested at sea in association with Indian Navy for evaluating the weapon capabilities as per Naval Staff qualitative requirements. The weapon has completed all environmental qualification tests like shock, vibration, temperature cycling, marine environmental tests, EMI/EMC tests etc.
This torpedo has been developed with high degree of modularity with more than 95 per cent indigenous content. All the test systems, accessories, special tools and handling equipment are developed simultaneously, enabling smooth maintenance, sourcing of spares, industry support and up-gradation. M/s Bharat Dynamics Ltd. has been associated with NSTL in the development of Varunastra as a production agency.
This is in line with “MAKE IN INDIA” initiative by Hon’ble Prime Minister.

Raksha Mantri Manohar Parrikar hands over first production variant of indigenously designed and developed Varunastra heavyweight torpedo to Indian Navy today said a reliable source close to idrw.org.
Varunastra heavyweight torpedo has been developed by DRDO’s Naval Science and Technology Laboratory and has successfully completed its developmental trials and has also gone through user evaluation trials and was waiting for clearance to go into production.
Naval officials which were part of trials have briefed Navy that heavyweight torpedo has performed well which were tested from Naval Warships and are confident heavyweight torpedo meets their requirements .
1500 kg torpedo can achieve speeds in excess of 40 knots and is powered by an electric propulsion system with multiple 250 KWs Silver Oxide Zinc (AgOZn) batteries.
Varunastra heavyweight torpedo will be manufactured at the Bharat Dynamics Ltd. facility.
