The four-lane highway, designed for fast traffic, will reduce Dhaka-Faridpur travel time by several hours

Bangladesh’s first ever expressway, from Dhaka to Faridpur's Bhanga upazila, will open for public use on Thursday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the high-speed superhighway via videoconference from her office, according to Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Engineer Khandaker Golam Mostafa.

Mostafa, also the project manager, told Dhaka Tribune that officials concerned will join the videoconference from the city’s Dholaipar area — from where the 54.7km four-lane Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway begins.

He said commuters will be able to take full advantage of the expressway after the now under-construction Padma Bridge is completed. According to the Bridges Division, the 6.15km multipurpose bridge will likely be opened to traffic in June 2021.

The expressway will reduce travel time between Dhaka and Faridpur by several hours, improving connectivity between Dhaka and the southern districts.

It is also part of the Asian Highway 1 (AH1), connecting Dhaka and Kolkata through the Benapole border, which will make international journeys more comfortable.

Now, commuters usually spend seven to eight hours to reach Faridpur from Dhaka as their usual route is only a two-lane road, which almost always suffers from severe gridlock.

Moreover, a limited number of ferries and their slow movement contribute in making the journeys needlessly longer. All of these will change once the expressway opens to traffic.

Tk11,000cr project

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) had approved the expressway project on May 3, 2016.

RHD and Special Work Organization of Bangladesh Army, under the supervision of the Road Transport and Highways Division, are implementing the project at a cost of Tk11,003.90 crore.

Initially, the estimated project cost was Tk6,252 crore and was scheduled to be completed by December 2018. It was later revised to Tk6,892 crore, but the construction was still only half done with the allocated funds already spent.

The government then took a new initiative to finish the incomplete work of the expressway’s Dhaka-Mawa part with an additional Tk4,111.86 crore, aiming to complete it by June 2020.

The expressway was implemented in two parts — 34.7km from Jatrabari to Mawa and 20km from Pachchar to Bhanga, with each kilometre costing over Tk200 crore.

About the expressway

An expressway is an urban motorway or highway designed for fast traffic, with controlled access.

On the four-lane Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway, drivers will get four entry and exit points between Dhaka and Mawa, and three between Pachchar and Bhanga.

Slow moving vehicles will have to use two service lanes on either side of the expressway.

The 54.7km four-lane Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Dhaka and Faridpur by several hours, improving connectivity between the capital and the southern districts | Syed Zakir Hossain/Dhaka TribuneThe expressway includes a five-metre-wide central reservation, two service roads, three large bridges over Dhaleshwari and Arial Kha rivers, and 28 culverts and bridges of different lengths, officials told Dhaka Tribune.

Six flyovers and four railroad overpasses have also been constructed under the project to ensure uninterrupted vehicular movement on the highway.

Additionally, there will be designated space for elevated rail services.

During a recent visit, this correspondent found that a railway overpass in Jurain area of the expressway was ready for opening, with vehicles already using it.

The expressway starts from the Dholaipar intersection, where an artery of the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover (Gulistan-Jatrabari) descends, and goes towards Mawa through the Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge (locally known as Postogola Bridge) over Buriganga River.

The bridge may briefly hamper a smooth journey as it is much narrower than the expressway. The Babubazar Bridge over the Buriganga also hinders easy passage in a similar way.

Project manager Mostafa said the government will also build two bridges over Buriganga River to improve conditions of traffic going towards the expressway.

Cycle rickshaws on expressway:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yeah I saw that. No police around of course to stop these folks. :-)

These days you gotta watch out for these poor ignorant suckers, 80 MPH vs. 5 MPH is no match, they'll get smashed and killed instantly...

Now, commuters usually spend seven to eight hours to reach Faridpur from Dhaka as their usual route is only a two-lane road, which almost always suffers from severe gridlock.
By the time the Padma Bridge construction goes on the R&H should develop the Gabtali-Aricha road to a 4-lane one. Aricha connects not only Faridpur, Rajbari, and Kushtia, but also greater districts like Pabna and Rajshahi. So, this is an important transport artery.

Great to see more progress on the long-term plan to connect all major cities and towns in BD with minimum 4-lane highways by 2030.
BD just needs to continue the momentum.

Seriously we hear so much good things about bangaldeshi economy.
But is this your first expressway?
And that too I mean we have these type in 80s. If you see pakistan's motorways and now throughout country. You would die of awe.
Atleast make international standards project with the money bangaldesh makes.
We near no remarkable projects infrastructure from Bangaldesh. Surely now they can do huge infrastructure spending.

Great to see more progress on the long-term plan to connect all major cities and towns in BD with minimum 4-lane highways by 2030.
BD just needs to continue the momentum.
Pakistan has already done that with 6 lane motorways and 4 Lane expressways in remort part. With international standard motorways not bangaldeshi standards.
But your economy is so good. We in Pakistan give your examples when talking about economy. Why don't you I mean go beyond that.

BD is building it's infrastructure with what the economy can support.
BD external debt gdp ratio is 17% of GDP but 38% for Pakistan.
IMF forecasts this will rise to 20% by 2028 and 21% by 2038.

BD has already completed many other road widening projects like the 4 lane Dhaka-Chittagong Highway and the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.

Many years ago, BD government adopted a multipurpose plan to upgrade 1,752 km of highways to four lanes, along with constructing road dividers and two-lane service roads on both sides of the highways for low speed vehicles to avoid accidents. So most of the "4-lane" highways will actually be 6 lanes.

BD is constructing transport and other infrastructure at full pace now and by 2030-2035 BD will have some of the best infrastructure in the developing world.

Country’s first expressway to be opened Thursday

https://unb.com.bd/m/category/Speci...to-open-up-new-era-of-road-connectivity/46739

Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway, the country’s first-ever international standard expressway, will open up a new era of road connectivity between the capital and south and southwestern parts of the country, reducing travel time by several hours.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will open the newly-constructed 55-km eye-catching expressway to traffic through videoconferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban on Thursday.

The expressway, having two service lanes, five flyovers, 19 underpasses, two interchanges, four railway over-bridges, four large bridges, 25 small bridges and 54 culverts, was constructed to ensure uninterrupted movement of vehicles with the southern parts of the country.

The high-speed superhighway will contribute to the national economy by boosting trade and commerce in the country as it will significantly improve the connectivity between Dhaka city, and the entire Khulna and Barishal divisions and parts of Dhaka division.

564usrkykfulc.jpg

The people of 22 districts in the country’s south and southwestern region, including Munshiganj, will directly be benefited from the modern expressway.

Commuters can get the full advantage of the expressway once the 6.15-km Padma Bridge is completed as it will connect the two parts -- 35-km Jatrabari intersection to Mawa and 20-km Panchar to Bhanga -– of the expressway. The government has planned to open the country’s longest bridge for traffic by June 2021.

It now takes 5-7 hours to reach Faridpur from Dhaka using the two-lane road, which witnesses nagging traffic congestions at different points, and ferries in Mawa.

But the journey will not needlessly be longer because of traffic gridlock and slow-moving vehicles as the expressway was constructed with controlled access. Two service lanes are kept on both sides of the expressway for slow-moving vehicles so that speedy vehicles can move uninterruptedly.

The expressway was constructed at a cost of Tk 11,003.90 crore considering the next 20-year traffic volume on the highway, which will be part of the Asian Highway, connecting Dhaka and Kolkata through the Benapole border and making international journey more comfortable.

The Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Army under the supervision of the Road Transport and Highways Division implemented the expressway project that was approved by Ecnec in 2016.

Now, the expressway which was completed three months before the stipulated time of June 2020 is being opened on the eve of the ‘Mujib Borsho’ marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Visiting the Jatrabari-Mawa portion of the expressway on Tuesday, it was seen that workers were giving the final touch on the expressway on the eve of its formal commissioning. Now, the expressway partly remains opened to traffic.

Mohammad Masud, owner of roadside Nirala Restaurant in Mawa, said it will take only 30-40 minutes instead of two hours to travel to Dhaka from Mawa as there will be no traffic jam on the expressway.

It used to take 30- 60 minutes to cross the Postagola railway crossing, but now it is a matter of 5-10 seconds to cross the spot using the expressway, he said.

“Many people now want to build houses and other establishments in our area due to improved communication system,” Masud said, adding that he believes that their area will turn into a tourist spot.

Arif Chowdhury, a British-Bangladeshi who visited the expressway, said, “It’s amazing. I can’t believe it. It seems to me that I’m somewhere in the UK. The quality and beauty of this expressway gives me a proud feeling.”

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway is the first-ever expressway in Bangladesh. “It’s not a four-lane highway, rather a six-lane one, including two service lanes,” he added.

“It’s a very eye-catching road. I think it’ll outshine many eye-catching roads in Europe. It was constructed with an excellent design,” he said, adding that a plantation move is underway to enhance the greenery view on both sides of the expressway.

Quader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana will go to Tungipara this month using this expressway.

Most people say, "3/4th of the glass is full, yet, there are people who would say, "1/4th of the glass is empty".

Some people see how full the glass is and some people finger point how empty it is. There are many different human minds.
