Could Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei give up on 5G to keep the company alive?

Maximum China can do domestically is 28nm at the moment, not counting SMIC. We still got to move into 14nm, then 12nm, 10nm before considering 7nm. I would say I don't see China reaching 7nm until 2030, given US sanction.
If SMEE can deliver an 28nm single exposure DUV stepper 2020-2021 will be possible for China to do not only 7nm but also 5nm way before 2025. They are ready have the etching equipment, the ion implantation equipment, the photo resists and other tools for that.

Not having an EUV machine will be hard to get the same yields than fabs with EUV but will not be to much far off, remember that ASML EUV machine is 14nm single exposure and according to sources the SMEE machine will be 28 nm single exposure will require more step to reach 7nm but not that much as with an ASML 38nm.

That's true, but remember that production has to be profitable to be sustainable. If low yield can't bring profit, then the technology won't be profitable unless heavily subsidized by the state.

Not useful, as SMIC can't supply Huawei due to fear of being cut off.

Huawei can also just pay for a custom line at SMIC that substitutes AMAT, Lam and KLA tools with AMEC, TEL and Hitachi tools. Rumors are that Samsung already shuffled their assets to separate US equipment from Japanese/Chinese equipment.

Depends, the more the you use local equipment the better and more efficient tools makers become. Even if the yield at the beginning is not very high with local tools those fabs could be there to server locals companies like Huawei, companies in the entity list, government and military clients so the demand could be proportional to the yield, that is until the fabs and tool makers get enough experience to go global.

Huawei overtakes Samsung as world’s biggest smartphone vendor, says report

For the first time ever, Huawei has shipped more smartphones worldwide over a quarter than any other company, according to a new report from analyst firm Canalys. Huawei has long harbored ambitions to overtake Samsung as the world’s biggest smartphone seller, and going by the numbers from Canalys, that’s just what happened during the April-June period this year.

Haha, the mighty US using DIRTY TRICKS got problem killing off 1 private Chinese company.

Could you explain, why an 28nm single exposure DUV can do not only 7nm but also 5nm?

Where do they get this funny idea that huawei is in trouble? Even if they don't export anything, the domestic market is more then big enough to profit and grow
They make this up because Huawei is not traded so it doesn't have any market capitalization.
