‘Corridor’ threats to sovereignty

Nobody is looking for a free lunch. You set the transit fees, if its okay for us we will accept it , if not look for alternate routes.

As I have told earlier so far many theory has been proposed by awamileague law makers... So we do not know what is really in their mind... They sold dream of becoming singapore, then couple of billion dollar income, then no fees n now subsidizing. The whole transit issue is basically in the hand of two Indian dalal rizvi and moshiur and dipu moni & Muhith is making some random claims but in reality are completely out of touch from the issue transit.

So far the highest amount proposed is by BNP and that is the 70% of the savings that Indians will save by going through Bangladesh. But then again it will not be enough to cover the 7 billion infra cost for transit and right now Bangladesh does not have that luxury to spend it for Indian transit routes... Where immediately couple of 1000 mw power is required to sustain 8 to 10 percent development growth and for industrial growth...n definitely a better north south road network. Here east to west play for now less priority as many important projects like padma bridge, metro rail, Dhaka Chittagong highway are on hold along with many others due to shortage of fund.

If India really want to see the project to go through then they will have to invest on the infra if not free then by build operate transfer basis but do not know whether it will be acceptable to the bd people. Even if India invest 7 billion usd it will benefit it in 10 to 15 years term tremendously considering the fueling growth in NE India, WB and due to connectivity to the south east Asia.

Else it will remain always a pipe dream as without infra there will be no transit even though bhartis are getting free rail and river transit using the treacherous 1972 treaty using emotional black maling.

You keep repeating this USD 7 billion. Do you have any link to this as 7 billion dollars is a huge sum and almost equal to the IPI pipeline cost layout. Add a little bit and we can built the Iran-Oman-India undersea pipeline all by our own. That will fuel India's growth much faster than the BD transit.

I think the solution here is BOT, but again that will mean we have to also tax BD vehicles plying the proposed route.

No, I was really talking of $7 billion that is needed to build physical infrastructure in the country to accomodate Indian goods to pass through Bangladesh. If you think of Aricha, it takes more than 3 hours to cross the river Padma. Trucks are queing in both the sides of this river and waiting for many hours to get on board a ferry.

So, under such a dire situation it is not possible to allow additional trucks to pass through this point. The proposed Padma Bridge cannot be the sole route for Indian trucks because it will cause traffic jams there. So, a bridge at Aricha is also neede, so that goods to Meghalay and assam can pass through this point.

Now, the proposed Padma Bridge at Mawa will cost us $2.2 billion. Add many hundred kms of 4-lane roads from east to west. It will take many billion dollars to build. Now, think of other medium and small bridges and culverts that have to be built wide enough to accomodate additional vehicles from India.

So, if you keep on adding these sums, the total exceeds $7 billion. Without this investment it is impossible to satisfy the Indian transit demand. Bangladesh does not really have any plan to build these infrastructures, because this country does not have that kind of money. So, who would foot that large bill. India or Bangladesh?

After India pays to build these, it must also be ready to pay fees to compensate for the daily destruction of these roads and bridges. Otherwise, these will collapse without a proper maintenance within a few years.

Why would myanmar kick out india when they are making money of it, they are not bangladesh, are they?

In case of Bangladesh, not even AL wants a transit of Indian trucks and goods. But, this party does not say it directly. Rather, it says or does something that antagonizes people against India. People start criticizing AL, and AL points this to India and indirectly say: look, our people are against it. So, we are helpless.

Other than talking sweet and a limited water transit through Ashuganj what India has got from this govt? Nothing. But, water transit is being conducted since 1972. Ashuganj is certainly a new route. It is new, but it is also limited. It seems, because its hands are bound by India for some unknown reasons, AL needs all the help from the opposition parties. BNP and others should stage street demonstrations against transit, so that the govt does not have to allow it to India.

Will you shed some light on this billion dollar money making machine????

I hope, Indians are educated enough not to say : We have provided $1 billion loan to you TO BUY OUR GOODS. So, what other money are you asking for?

Benefit for BD with the Transit:

A brief summary for fellow members

Inland water-way use: fixed income for BD govt + shipment charge income for private BD companies (100% indian shipments will use private BD vessels)

Railway usage: charges based on usage

As per WTO rules the charges shall approximately be equal to the cost of the services rendered and shall not be used for augmentation of revenue or for protecting domestic services.

Private BD income from indian shipments
2001-02: 2Crore TK
2009-10: 4.52crore TK

Ashuganj- Agortala road
• Improvement-augmentation costs borne by india
• Cost for setting up transshipment facility borne by india
• Ro-Ro ferry installed by india

I hope the above information pacifies the upset BD members. Clearly more shipments will mean more income for the govt (rail use) and private BD companies (water vessels)

Read eastwatch's post on #63.

Eastwatchs post was, in words of Salman Bashir, mere literature, without any facts and figures.

"We need make culverts, we need new bridges as in existing one there will be traffic jam etc etc!"

Just as I said, a perfect example of Nijer naak kete porer jatra Bhango.

It was connectivity to silk route which made Bengal prosperous once, but who'd knock sense into opinionated people!
