Vaccination drive for people aged 17 years or above begins

The vaccination drive for people aged 17 years or above started today (September 1) as part of the government's strategy to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Earlier, people who were 18 or older were being immunised against coronavirus in the country.

Last week, Umar, the head of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), and Dr. Faisal Sultan, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Health Services,
Regulations, and Coordination, announced a slew of new steps and plans to combat COVID-19 cases.

They announced that 17-year-olds will be able to receive coronavirus vaccine shots from September.

They also said Pakistan is preparing to offer inoculations to 15-year-olds and disclosed the government's vaccine mandates for anybody intending to travel or attend school.

The government will shortly begin an immunisation campaign for people aged 15 to 16 years, with a date to be announced soon, the two said, adding that residents with impaired immune systems aged 12 and up will also receive the COVID-19 shots.

Jewish doctor criticising the narrative and vaccination.

What I have understood so far is that, at the time of Covid vaccination, a person should be healthy/stable with strong immune system. Vaccines(sinopharm/sinovac) have dead/inactivated virus. One a person is injected with vaccine, his immune system respond to it and fights the dead virus and it keeps on fighting it for next 2/3/4 weeks and then stands guard incase virus strikes again. These are called antibodies.

The thing with common cold/flu is that, its also viral. Hence your immune system respond to it and starts fighting, till the time it defeats the virus and they take time to recover and get strong again.

Hence the reason its recommended not to get vaccinated if you are already suffering from cold/virus and get the corona shot afterwards once your immune system is out of battle and is stronger. Now how many days or weeks? That I don't know, could be just a week or could be 2/3 weeks.

Anyway, I once read a comment by @Baby Leone , who got common cold in middle of his 1st and second shot and doctor advised him to delay the second. May be he can put some insight.
Yeah my first dose was in June and the date for second dose was July 8 but I got severe viral fever and then flu doctor said you may take the dose when you are okay and then I took my 2nd dose on Aug 9 I guess and it's okay.

The United States will begin sending over 4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine to Pakistan on Thursday, Voice Of America (VOA) reported, citing a White House spokesperson.

The 4,149,990 doses being sent through the World Health Organization's COVAX initiative are in addition to the more than 9.2 million doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccine already donated to Pakistan since June.

“As President Biden has said: the United States is committed to bringing the same urgency to international vaccination efforts that we have demonstrated at home,” the spokesperson told VOA.

“We are working to get as many safe and effective vaccines to as many people around the world as fast as possible.”

On Wednesday, Pakistan reported 3,559 Covid-19 cases after carrying out a total of 53,637 tests countrywide during the past 24 hours with a positivity ratio of 6.64 per cent, which has taken the national cases tally to 1,163,688 since the pandemic outbreak.

Earlier on Thursday, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar warned that patient inflow at hospitals as well as the occupancy of critical care patients is the highest in Pakistan since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

As Pakistan endeavours to curtail the spread of the novel virus, it is also rushing to inoculate its population, with the country administering 1,590,309 doses of the coronavirus vaccine, the highest in a single day, on August 31.

Meanwhile, 35% of Pakistan's eligible population has so far received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

The country has also started vaccinating citizens aged 17 with the Pfizer vaccine along with immunocompromised individuals between 12 to 17 years of age.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) announced on Saturday that Pakistan has now administered over 60 million jabs of the Covid-19 vaccine, as the ongoing fourth wave continues to take toll on the country.

In a tweet, the NCOC said that during the last 24 hours, 1,151,390 doses were administered across the country, taking the total number to 60,536,148. The forum urged the citizens to get vaccinated, especially those who have not gotten their second dose of the vaccine.

The country intends to vaccinate 70 million people by the end of this year and has also committed to spending $1.1 billion on procuring the Covid-19 vaccine to inoculate its people. Pakistan has been inoculating the citizens with CanSino, Sinopharm, SinoVac, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.

Meanwhile, during the last 24 hours, Pakistan reported 3,980 new cases at a positivity ratio of 6.21%. Seventy-nine people also succumbed to the novel virus across the country.

On Friday, the NCOC decided to impose a new set of restrictions in areas with high coronavirus prevalence in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Islamabad from September 4 till September 12 to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The new restrictions will apply to Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Khanewal, Multan, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan, Peshawar, Swabi, Malakand, Swat, Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra and Dera Ismail Khan and Islamabad.

Under the new restrictions, all indoor and outdoor events have been banned. Additionally, public transport will be banned and indoor gyms and educational institutions will remain closed.

The restrictions were announced after the NCOC took a detailed stock of the current disease situation in different districts, daily hospital admissions, pressure on critical care and availability of oxygen, it said.

In wake of the increasing number of Covid cases, Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar warned on Thursday that patient inflow at hospitals as well as the occupancy of critical care patients is the highest in Pakistan since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

He said that like the rest of the world, the Delta variant has also had an impact on Pakistan, and is rapidly spreading. This is increasing the burden on hospitals, he added.
