As coronavirus lockdown restrictions in China are slowly lifted, one Chinese soccer club aims to quickly get back into the swing of things.

Guangzhou Evergrande has announced that work has begun on an eye-catching, 100,000-seat stadium, which would be the largest football stadium in the world.

Designed in a lotus flower shape, the stadium is scheduled to cost AUD2.7 billion (12 billion yuan) and to be completed by the end of 2022.

The goal is to achieve “a world-class new landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and an important symbol of Chinese football going to the world,” according to president of real estate conglomerate Evergrande, Xia Haijun.

Guangzhou Evergrande has played at the 60,000-seater Tianhe Stadium since 2011.

The 100,000 capacity would surpass the 99,354 capacity of Barcelona’s Camp Nou, currently the largest soccer-only stadium in the world.

The design of the stadium is the work from the Shanghai-based American designer Hasan Syed, following an initial concept from the Evergrande Group chairman Xu Jiayin.

The lotus flower design originates from Guangzhou’s status as the Flower City.

The stadium includes 16 VIP private rooms, 152 VIP private rooms, a FIFA area, an athletes area, a media area and a press room.

According to ESPN, Xia told reporters that Evergrande plans to construct between three and five more stadiums with capacities of 80,000 to 100,000 around China.

This is to create capacity in case the country ever hosts the World Cup.

Guangzhou Evergrande is one of the most successful teams in China and Asia.

Evergrande to build two more 80,000-seat stadiums in China
BY AFP.COM - 20 April 2020

The wealthy owners of Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande will build two stadiums with capacities of 80,000 each, in addition to the club's new 100,000-seat home.

Chinese Super League (CSL) clubs are building or renovating a clutch of stadiums with the country set to host the newly expanded 2021 FIFA Club World Cup and AFC Asian Cup in 2023.

But the rush on new arenas will also heighten speculation that China is gearing up for a bid to host the World Cup, possibly in 2030.

Evergrande Group, a major property developer, has asked fans to pick their favourite designs for two more new stadiums.

"Evergrande plans to build two additional 80,000-seat football fields and invites everyone to recommend two of the six preliminary plans," Guangzhou Evergrande's owners said on social media.

The statement did not give any further information such as where in China or when the stadiums would be built.

CSL champions Guangzhou Evergrande, coached by Italian World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, began work Thursday on their eye-catching new home.

Costing 12 billion yuan ($1.7 billion), it will be bigger than Barcelona's famous Camp Nou and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022.

Evergrande Group's founder is the billionaire Xu Jiayin, one of the richest men in China.

We couldn't care less, you are right, every country looks after their own interests and more and more countries align their interests with China.

Why are you guys throwing money into mega projects that will stay empty? I wonder whether your goverment is aware that using construction as accelerator for GDP growth is only profitable for short term while its long term effects are way worse.

Construction Begins On Epic $1.7 Billion Stadium In China, Set To Be Football’s Largest
TRAVIS YOESTINGAPRIL 17, 2020

GUANGZHOU EVERGRANDE IS BUILDING THE BEAUTIFUL STADIUM, SET TO OPEN IN 2022.

What is set to become the world’s biggest football stadium broke ground on Thursday, with Chinese Super League club Guangzhou Evergrande beginning construction on a venue that is expected to be completed in 2022.

The incredible-looking stadium will have 100,000 seats, which would pass Barcelona’s Camp Nou and equal Iran’s Azadi Stadium as the largest soccer-specific stadium.

The lotus flower shape was designed by Shanghai-based American Hasan Syed. It will be one of the most expensive constructions in sports, easily passing recent stadium builds in Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, $1.5 billion) and London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, $1.3 billion).

“Evergrande Stadium will become a new world-class landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House and Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and an important symbol of Chinese football to the world,” said Xia Haijun, president of Evergrande, a real estate conglomerate.

The stadium will include 168 VIP boxes and 16 even more exclusive VVIP boxes, because money. This for a club that, while one of the biggest in Asia, drew an average crowd of less than 46,000 in 2019 at the 58,500-seat Tianhe Stadium.

Hia said Evergrande plans to build three to five more similar stadiums throughout China.

There are larger stadiums throughout the world, but none built specifically for soccer. North Korea’s Rungrado May Day Stadium reportedly can seat 150,000 and is home to the country’s national soccer team, among other forms of propaganda. A few racetracks (motor and horse) boast more than 200,000 seats and many more pass the 100,000-seat marker. The famed Maracanã was once the biggest football stadium with as many as 199,854 in attendance for a 1950 World Cup match, but it has since had its capacity reduced to about 79,000 for the safety and comfort of fans.

We all know. You control people with breads and circus. Roman themselves were truthful about this fact. Some other places these days , it is a special game( read gambling) , movies, etc. The objective remains the same— perception management.

The whole world suffered from AIDS, Spanish (Kansas) Flu, Swine Flu and Syphilis. Did US ever get into hot water?

One more thing, the primary COVID-29 virus strain in US is the A type, closest to similar coronavirus found in bats. Primary strain in the Wuhan outbreak was B strain, a mutated version. Combine the fact that California is now discovering they may have had COVID-19 cases as far back as November last year, makes US a prime suspect for place of origin.

China is not responsible for your country's inaction, inadequacies and incompetence when you've failed to prepare. WHO was notified of the outbreak on December 31, and the genome of the virus was made available by China by January 12. Human to human transmission was declared on January 18. We locked down Wuhan where the first mass outbreak occurred on January 21 and WHO declared a major health emergency by January 28. If you didn't heed the warnings, it's on you.
