Congress leader VC Shukla 'critically injured' in Maoist ambush, one killed

This is simply maoist propaganda whether intended like that or not. The maoists have been fighting for almost all the years that India has been independent, not like they waited for things to get better. They have only one aim, to overthrow the Indian state & impose their version of a Khmer Rouge regime. Anyone romanticising these terrorists is either a fool or an accomplice. The maoists kill everyone in their way, school teachers, doctors... anyone who does not agree with them. They have been involved in poaching for money, extortion, illegal mining, timber mafia...pretty much everything they can do. Really stupid to see these chaps as some sort of Robin Hood types. They are terrorists who have no real support, if they did & had the guts to test it, they should try & stand for elections. Sorry pathetic excuses about banana republics & "unreal" elections don't cut it.

Do you know , how P.Chidhambaram was declared as won in the sivagangai constituency as MP. Initially the Election officer declared the opposite candidate Rajakannapan has won. When it's almost certain that congress is going to rule the center, again the result changed, after some time the same Election officer declared P.Chidhambaram has won and said there was a mistake and they counted the votes again.Whole tamil nadu knows this story. Everything in this banana republic is only for those who are in power(money), how far the elections are fair??If you have money, then only u can win here. It's pathetic to see how people here are blindly trusting this so-called banana republic.

It's foolish to say that we are democracy, Democracy means U.S. 30 years passed can't able to punish those who are responsible for the death of 3000 sikhs and etc, etc. Then what's the point in believing this so-called democracy/republic and it's law. Almost in all the stories at the end the LAW had a bend.

To a certain extent, while I agree with you, let me share my view point. One of my batchmates mother is intricately involved in development activities in the Maoist corridor. Which means she regularly needs to travel into areas which are considered dangerous and off limits. Below are her, my friend's and my observations :

1. At no point of time has she ever been troubled by the Maoists. She teaches children, specifically tribal children and if possible teaches even adults. And the locations she goes to are avoided by even cops.
2. No doctor who helps the adivasis is ever harmed. Not even at night. No need of any escort.
3. The Maoists target government functionaries, since they believe them to be imperialists.

Having observed the above, we also need to understand why is there a problem in these areas? If, you have been to the above you will literally cry when you see the conditions that prevails. There is only one answer to solving problems, that is improving their lives. The current government initiative of promoting only procurement of raw materials is dangerous. Here you are adhering to requirements of corporate entities whose sole motive is profit, not welfare.

Simple things. Water, electricity and most importantly respect for their way of life. This is what is required in these territories. Provision of electricity and water is the duty of the government to provide. Respect for their way of life comes from including them in the development process rather than imposing development the way as dictated by requirements.

Today, we hear the call to put the army there and back it up with attack helicopters. For what? To cover the failure of the governance mechanism in those areas? These are roles of the Home ministry and not the Defence ministry. As multiple people from the armed forces have observed, they can only provide a clear path, but the maintenace of that clear path falls on the civilian administration. The latter part is what is lacking.

That is standard loose talk. If politicians could always manipulate elections; why only Chidambaram, no one in power should have lost. Those are no excuses. Many people don't pick up guns against the state. To argue a scenario where the maoists are somehow romanticised as heroes is absurd. You use the moniker "Indan Tiger", if the maoists had their way, there would be no Indian tigers left. The system may(will) have its faults, the question is how will an alternative way be established? By riding rough shod over people who don't agree? However bad the present system, we have a chance to boot out people. In a maoist rule, you would only face the boot.

The maoists engage in large scale extortion & loot including of mineral resources. Surely you don't believe all those arms are coming from the trees? You are confusing two different matters. The first one is of under development of those areas which no one can disagree with. The second one is however more straightforward. The maoists are not negotiating for development, their aim; stated or otherwise is the overthrow of the Indian state. While something can & should be done for development, armed rebellion, especially with the stated aim of overthrowing of the state, must be met with no muddle headedness. It must be crushed with the full power of the state, the earlier the better. No other option exists, unless the maoists are willing to negotiate a conversion to a political grouping & willing to test their strength in elections.

We are independent for 60 years, still you are talking about an alternate way to clean up the system. This tells how big we have failed. Never a common man in this country won against a powerful politician. Till that happens, who will believe in this system.

In this country,Poor who steal in hunger undergone more punishment than the ones who done billion dollar scams(Raja, kalmadi everyone is free now). In our country the word "Democracy " seems good for argument shake and to give interview's in TV.

What happens once those areas are secured? Will we continue our existing policies?

These are Indians at the end of the day. They have lost belief in the government. Not the concept of India. So it should not be compared to an insurgency fuelled in other parts where the fight against the State is to carve another.

Now, there were areas which were cleared by the CRPF. Why is it that these areas fell once again? Its because of the sheer absence of a follow through plan. Why do you do once you have sanitised an area? What is the fight for in these areas?

While you agree that development needs to be pushed, why do you also not see that simply killing these Indians is not the solution? If you can provide the development required the violence will drop.

Let me give you a simple example, if someone came and told you to get out of your house without compensation and then starts digging up your place, makes huge amounts of money while you have been brought out in the street what will you do?

Not logical. The maoists are running an ideological movement not just a fight for development. There is no magic wand to suddenly develop a particular area.It will take time, a lot of time. There is no scope for negotiation if the opposing party demands the complete destruction of the state. That is an invitation for suicide. Your arguments are simplistic, maoists were fighting long before even a single mine was sought to be opened. I'm not asking for violence against peaceful protestors. Maoists killed fellow Indians, regardless of their political affiliation, they were Indians & were butchered because they were representative of the Indian state. The response should be unequivocal, violence is a path they have chosen. It must be brought to them till they learn that they cannot succeed.

Again, let me try to make my point clearer. People who adhere to violence have to be dealt with. But dealing with them is an issue of law and order. Area domination, which where the CRPF comes in can be utilised only in short stints. The implementation of law and order is the role of the government. What happens once you clear the area of Maoists? There is no plan today. One of the reasons for militancy to drop in a lot of other areas, was when the government announced amnesty for those who surrender. Provide opportunities to them. While strength can be displayed its usage should be extremely limited.

Let me also tell you. I have also spoken to officials who head anti-naxal operations. They too say the same thing. What after we clear? We can keep clearing, but, is that the objective?

You are discussing strategy & planning. There I have no issues with you. Surrender does not happen in a vacuum, it happens when the pressure on them becomes unbearable. We have fought counter-insurgencies for decades without a final solution in NE, have done it for over 2 decades now in Kashmir, nothing new here. First things first. No muddle headedness in approach. Violence should & must invite a swift & ruthless response. When the people are willing to move away from that, engage them by all means. No blanket amnesty though. The people who have been killed by Maoists were Indians too.

Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh: A ‘political conspiracy’?

Nagpur: May 27: As expected the blame game over gruesome Naxal attack on the convoy of Congress leaders in Chhattisgarh’s Darbha Gahti in Sukuma has begun with the Congress and BJP trading charges against each other. The so called human rights-wallahs and left-secular bandwagon has also joined the chorus in denouncing the Chhattisgarh Government headed by Chief Minister Raman Singh. The Union Home Secretary R K Singh has sounded warning by saying that the attack took place due to ‘security lapses’. He also indicated that the NIA will probe the incident to nail those responsible for these ‘security lapses’.

Senior Congress leader and former Minister Mahendra Karma, who had launched the controversial ‘Salwa Judum’ movement to counter the Naxalites, was the main target. But all those who were either killed or injured in this brutal and dastardly attack belonged to anti-Ajit Jogi camp in Chhattisgarh Congress. Was this a mere coincidence? Or was it a ‘political conspiracy’ as claimed by the family members of the slain Chhattisgarh PCC Chief Nandkumar Patel? A thorough and impartial inquiry into this incident would bring the hidden truth behind this apprehension. But as for the present, it appears that the needle of suspicion in this conspiracy, if at all it is one, points to the former chief minister Ajit Jogi. The circumstantial facts, it seems, further strengthen this apprehension.

According to reports Umesh Patel, the son of Nandkumar Patel, has sought CBI probe into the incident suspecting a ‘political conspiracy’ behind this tragedy. Talking to press persons at his native village Nandeli, Umesh Patel said that the fact that Naxals were asking for senior party leaders by calling their names indicated that there was some political conspiracy behind the killing of his father, brother and other senior Congress party leaders including Mahendra Karma and Vidya Charan Shukla.

In Chhattisgarh state politics, Mahendra Karma, Nandkumar Patel, Vidya Charan Shukla et el were looked down by Ajit Jogi, who became the chief minister of the newly formed state with the blessings of Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi against the wishes of the senior party men, as his strong contenders and opponents. Vidya Charan Shukla had taken strong objection to Jogi’s elevation to the top post at the behest of Sonia Gandhi. He had said on record that Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s “obsession” with the Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi, had led to suffocation in the party, at both the Centre and the State.

It may be recalled that Shukla was attacked on March 7, 2003 highlighting the bitter rivalry between him and Jogi and it was even presumed that the attack was ‘remote-controlled by Ajit Jogi’. Shukla had then criticized Sonia Gandhi for shielding Jogi. “Sonia has a closed mind as far as Jogi is concerned”, he had said in an interview to a news portal.

Mahendra Karma and Nandkumar Patel were also considered strong opponents and contenders to the post of chief minster should the Congress secure majority in ensuing assembly elections in the state. Jogi never missed a chance to let down both Karma and Patel. Karma was a tribal and was a very popular leader. Jogi even went to the extent of forging his caste to be known as an ‘Adivasi’. That he had to lose power for this corrupt practice was another story, but it showed to what level he could go down to for furthering his own interests. Nandkumar Patel belonged to OBC and he too was a popular and powerful leader. Both were eliminated in the naxal attack.

Was it a mere coincidence? Or, a well-planned conspiracy? The way Jogi shed tears and wailed as soon as he got the news of killings, appeared more like a drama than reality. He was the first to demand resignation of chief minister Dr Raman Singh and imposition of Central Rule in Chhattisgarh.

There is another angle to this entire episode. Jogi’s confident Kavasi Lakhma, Congress MLA from Konta, who accompanied Nandkumar Patel and his son Dinesh in a Scorpio, is a known sympathizer of Naxals. It is rumored that it was Lakhma who led all these people to death under a planned conspiracy. When the convoy was stopped by the Naxalites, and they began identifying the leaders by calling their names, Lakhma, when disclosed his identity, was let go by them. But they took Patel and others captives with their hands tied at the back.

Lakhma is known to have Naxalite connections. As his master Jogi was against Salwa Judum, Lakhma was also opposed to this step initiated by Mahendra Karma. He was also charged in extortion cases in the past. All the four leaders in the Congress Parivartan Yatra –Mahendra Karma, V C Shukla, Nandkumar Patel and his son were given security. But they were accompanied by followers in 22 vehicles. That was obviously a great number to pass through the tribal and naxal-dominated area of Sukma and Bastar.

Ajit Jogi fled the yatra by helicopter just before the function ended at Sukma. It was surprising that all those who were killed belonged to anti-Jogi camp in the state Congress organization. They were also known supporters of anti-Naxal campaigns. Ajit Jogi and his connection with the Christian missionary organizations is well known and well established. That the missionaries and Maoists work hand in glove in tribal areas was exposed following the brutal murder of Swami Laxmananda in Kandhmal in Odisha some years ago. There is, therefore, a need to have the inquiry done keeping this angle in mind.

The incident also exposed the bitter political rivalry within the state Congress leadership. It is now open secret that the Congress leadership had encouraged the Naxalites and allowed them to grow in tribal areas of the state. Congress always nurtured the Naxalites and never accepted that it was a grave threat to the security and integrity of the nation. The then Home Minsiter Shivraj Patil had directed the security agencies to adopt a ‘mild approach’ towards these Naxalites. The Congress strategy has been to precipitate a problem and then take credit for resolving it. The same tactics they have adopted in dealing with the Maoist menace in the country. Today the Maoists have spread their tentacles in over 200 districts of the country right from Pashupati (Nepal) to Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and yet the Central Government refuses to accept it as threat to nation’s security and integrity. The Congress leaders used to call them as ‘misguided youths’. This approach will have to be discarded forthwith to put an effective halt to such mindless massacres in future.

Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh: A

Not a good article.

Salwa Judum was not a good start, not just Jogi, but judicial system was opposed to it too. You dont fight dogs by becoming dogs.
Jogi left by helicopter, big deal for an Indian politician. Opposing politicians dont travel together anyways.

And like those naxals would ask for names, and politicians would honestly tell them!
