Bangladesh endorses one-child policy

Bangladesh is going to introduce a voluntary "one couple, one child" population planning policy by 2015 to curb its growing population.

The Director General of the Directorate of Family Planning Mohammad Abdul Qayyum told the Chinese news agency Xinhua that: "The Chinese policy influenced us in framing our policy though we are not making it mandatory." He said that the government plans to promote a "No more than two children, one is best".

"We are eager to develop relationship with Chinese population planning authorities for training our men, using modern contraceptive and other related matters," Qayyum said.

According to the government’s draft policy, one-child families will have preference in state schools and will be eligible for financial grants.

With a population of about 150 million and a birth rate of about 2.7 children per woman, Bangladesh is said to be the most densely populated country in the world. According to Mr Qayyum, "Overpopulation is a burden for the country. If we fail to achieve our target to reduce the present birth rate, it will soon be difficult to meet the basic demands of people. We may even fail to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by its targeted period of 2015."

News accounts of this initiative are sketchy, but administering it will be cumbersome: 21 ministries will be involved; religious leaders will have to be persuaded to promote the policy. It is unclear how the rights of the girl-child will be respected. According to an interview with Mr Qayyam in The Daily Star newspaper, "The policy will also encourage every fertile woman to give birth to only one girl child during her total reproduction age." ~ Xinhua, Dec 23; Daily Star, Dec 14;

Maybe thats why Indian trains go so fast... The poop and piss the Indians defect on their railways is enough to accelerate the trains

Epic post. SO open defecation is part of Indian rail technology eh. I hope Indians apply for
a patent on this, no body would want to copy such tech.

.
actually Icewolf is wrong! Stool damages railway track which is responsible for indian train accidents! Saw it in prothom alo

.
Which report, I'm a regular reader of al jazeera, didn't come across any such report.

Defecation in open is a Bangladeshi problem as well, although they do it in open fields while trying to get their lungis in order.

You sure you being one of the citizen of the world's largest open defecating state want to lie
like that.

The Hindu : Health / Policy & Issues :
A quote from the article:
Sixty per cent of the "global total" who do not have access to toilets live in India, and hence are forced to defecate in the open. In actual numbers, sixty per cent translates to 626 million. This makes India the number one country in the world where open defecation is practised.

626 million is more than 1/2 of India's population. Keep on ponting la la bong.

Well bro that also explains the phenomenal amount of rail accident in India. This open ponting that indians are so fond of is having a serious effect on India it seems.:undecided:

Sounds good. Can you give me a link?
Also, Bangladesh is one of the densest populated countries of the world.
I can't believe it had greater population than West Pakistan in 1971.
But yes population growth rate is coming down which is good for India.
Also, economy of Bangladesh is also improving which is another good news.

Link:UNdata | record view | Population growth rate (percentage)

Between 2005-2010, BD population growth was 1.12 percent a year and India was at 1.43%.

This is UN data and is much more reliable than biased CIA data:laugh:

It's 1.2% to be exact:
Population growth (annual %) | Data | Table

India is 1.4%.

I agree, we seriously need to do more to address the issue of population growth. Even 1% is a lot! lolz...

.
The power of compound interest. 1.2% annual increase for 20 years will mean another 40 million Bangladeshis by 2032. You boys got to lock that down

no thats Iztema the largest religious gathering after Hajj! people crawl to attend that let alone trains! ....... It is in my town, i cant travel home from dhaka during those days, because the road from Dhaka To Gazipur becomes full of people trying to join the gathering...anyway nice try!

And people ask that why decadel Muslim population growth of Assam is 42.62%( highest among all the state India ) since conversion of religion among assamese, bodo, or kosari is very rare( I never saw any of them converting )?

Kasay population brayga jab sab idar jump karkay aajata hai bhaishahab.

Look at all these Indians now all happy about Bangladesh's Misery and should anyone open a thread about 1971 all these disgusting Indians will come like locusts with their crocodile tears to show sympathy for Bangladeshis.

Well Mr retard, I didn't deny that large fraction of Indian people don't have proper sanitation, but only asked for the al jazira report which your jamati buddy trying to peddle.

And as I said, sanitation is a problem in Bangladesh as well.

Bangladesh is in the zone of very low coverage stage in sanitation. Bangladesh is the 9th most densely populated country in the world. According to Joint Monitoring Programme by WHO and UNICEF in 2006, 51% of urban areas had improved sanitation facilities and only 7% urban areas had sewerage connection. In addition, only 32% of the rural population was using improved sanitation in 2006.

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the most densely populated city in the world. Almost one third of the total urban population lives in Dhaka city. However, only 20% of the households in the Dhaka city are connected to conventional sewerage systems. There is only one sewage treatment plant in Dhaka city with a capacity of 120,000m3 per day. Collected wastewater with existing sewage connection is three times higher than its capacity. Therefore, the plant bypasses most of the sewage and discharges directly into the river. Moreover, sewerage connections in some areas collapse due to poor maintenance. As a result, sewerage overflows are regular scenes in Dhaka city during the rainy season. This is the best scenery of sanitation system in Bangladesh. The rest, 80% of households, use septic tanks, pit latrines, unhygienic latrines or open defecation. Many high-rise buildings also discharge their excreta into nearby water systems. Industries also discharge effluent directly to the river without any treatment. The result of the poor sanitation system in Dhaka city is the present condition of the Buriganga River, which is no longer a river at all.

Bangladesh – Sanitation deserves highest priority | Sanitation Updates

But I must laud you people that you even brave the BSF bullets to pole vault to India where people defecates open, but off course you guys are addicted to poont, so no surprise there.
