Clashes displace 100,000 people in SE Turkey: Report

A new report says tens of thousands have been displaced as a result of recent clashes between the Turkish military and PKK militants in Turkey’s volatile southeast.
The report by Turkey’s General Directorate of Security said the clashes have forced some 100,000 residents to flee their homes.
It cited Cizre and Silopi districts in Sirnak Province, Sur in Diyarbakir Province as well as Dargecit and Nusaybin in Mardin Province as mostly affected.
The report said people are migrating to other areas to avoid crossfire and adverse effects of round-the-clock curfews.

Ankara has been engaged in a large-scale campaign against the PKK in its southern border region in the recent past. The Turkish military is also conducting offensives against PKK positions in northern Iraq.
The operations began in the wake of a deadly July 20 bombing in the southern Turkish town of Suruc. More than 30 people died in that attack, which the Turkish government blamed on the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group.
PKK militants launched a series of attacks against Turkish troops after the bombing, prompting government's military operations in response.
