Chinese media wonders if Liang’s India visit will help end border dispute

Beijing: Expectations from the visit of Defence Minister Liang Guanglie to India are running high, said a daily that claimed “outsiders with ulterior motives dislike” that the Chinese military has forged closer ties with other militaries in the region.

An editorial in the China Daily Wednesday said: “General Liang’s current visit to India is the first a Chinese defence minister has made to that country in eight years.”

“It remains unclear whether his talks with Indian officials will touch on a long-standing border dispute that is partially responsible for the neighbours’ distrust of each other,” it said.

India has a dragging dispute with China over its Arunachal Pradesh state.

The editorial added: “Expectations are running high that the visit may lead to a new session of the ‘hand-in-hand’ military drills that Indian and Chinese troops have conducted together.”

India and China Tuesday decided to resume their stalled joint military exercises “at the earliest” and boost security cooperation to sustain peace and tranquility in border areas. The decision to resume joint military exercises, which was stalled in 2010 due to a diplomatic spat over visa issues, was announced after 90-minute talks between Indian Defence Minister AK Antony and his Chinese counterpart Gen Liang Guanglie.

The defence minister’s five-day India visit began Sunday, a day when Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the general staff of the People’s Liberation Army, left Beijing for Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia and Singapore.

The next day, Wu Shengli, PLA naval commander, started on a trip to Turkey and a deputy chief of staff of the PLA Navy arrived in Indonesia.

The daily said: “We have witnessed public indignation arise at home following provocations by foreign claimants and seen decision-makers come under greater pressure to get tough. But we have heard nothing that is provocative from our own defence authorities.”

It went on to say that “outsiders with ulterior motives dislike that the PLA has forged closer ties with other militaries in the region. But that is exactly what the PLA needs to do and should do more of”.

“These territorial disputes would not be threatening the entire region’s safety had there not been instigations from outsiders,” the daily noted.

“The PLA now has the difficult responsibility of explaining its non-offensive strategy and need to expand, as well as show its willingness to work more closely with other militaries in the region. A greater amount of mutual confidence among militaries in the region will prove a fundamental guarantor of peace.

“They have an obligation to show that countries in this part of the world are capable of solving their problems by themselves,” it added.

I too will be happy to see India, China, Russia to start campaign against USA. But if China wants peace,
they must first dismantle all military infrastructure at the Indian border immediatley;) Is ChinDefMin
prepared for that?

Trust me, People on both sides of the border pray it does.

A defence minister will not change anything in this regard, because he is not deciding the policy of the nation.

if india do it first

China started it, so China must stop it first too, at least that would be a smart move, because China can't afford to wast resources for a piece of land that has no importance, when the US is increasing their military capabilities in Chinas backyard with money they borought lent from China!

The biggest mistake in any political/defence conflict was always to start a second battlefield, because that makes you more vulnerable and increasing your presence alongside Indias borders is such a mistake.

are we prepared to do the same?
question ourself before we ask the other party to do some thing unilatraly.
its better that both maintain a military presence at the border but do frequent friendly excercise and improve military as well as economic ties

I am yet to come across a fellow country man who accepts that 1962 was equally our responsibility, had Nehru not pushed his forward policy there would have never been a 1962.

talking about battle field, Is INDIA prepared to fight for US? if no then there is no sane minded INDIAN is now in a mood to go and fight the CHINESE for just claiming the right on disputed lands as every one knows both are maintaining status quo and its working well for both parties

And neither might be the Chinese, because they have bigger issues than these piece of land without any strategic advantage, or to fight India at all. But increasing the power in that reagions, will only increase tensions and help the US, once because China gets weaker to stand against them, secondly because we will move more closer to them. At the same time it would be politically and strategically better for India and China to focus on a strong Asia countering western policies on a global level, than fighting eachother because of minor border issues.

when we talk and post out of thin air, I hope the Chinese Inteligence and the Indian Intelligence who hold tons of knowledge and back channels open to save potential disaster might have better solution than what we can propose over the internet.
Am i not right?

But why try to save from a potential disaster at the end, when you can shut it down at the beginning? It's up to Chinese politicians how their foreign policy works and in the last few years they did a great job to mess it up in whole Asia, I guess only the Africans are happy about them at the moment.

Who says that we are fighting the US? Ever heard of the G-2? We have the largest bilateral economic relationship in the world.

China doesn't start two-front wars, we aren't that stupid. It's the Indian Army who is constantly worrying about a two-front war.

PLA cannot fight two-front war with US bcoz you don't share a land border with them. PLA prepares for one-front with India and as an answer IA has to prepare,,,the other front (Pakistan) is a different issue and none of China's business, but however China has done a mistake by encroaching in Pakistan-administered Kashmir that is disputed territory and is the one waging wars everywhere.

PLA should dismantle infrastructure and troop concentartions in both Pak-admin Kashmir and in TAR and/or other and areas adjoining India & China. Only then is peace possible.

No thanks.

We like our border regions to have infrastructure. We like our whole country to have infrastructure.

Crazy idea, I know.

See? This is why peace hasn't been possible for over half a century.

Infrastructure is of 2 types. 1) Civilian infrastructure, 2) Military infrastructure.
The type of military infrastructure and troop concentration, underground network
on the Chinese side of the border is a cause for agressive posturing of both countries.

Secondly, Chinese are making a mistake (a very blatant one at that) by building
imilitary infrastructure and troop presence in Pak-admin Kashmir, which is not only
a disputed territory but also forms a cause of further conflict between Indian and
Pakistani political fronts. Blame US for mongering war between India & China? Well,
China is doing no different here, mongering conflict between India & Pakistan so
that Pak rushes to buy more equipment from China. This act of yours will cost you
dearly in the coming years.

China should first leave Pak-admin Kashmir permenantly.

No, that was because India hosted our largest separatist group in 1959, and then carried out the Forward Policy against us in 1962, which triggered the Sino-Indian War.

Even though China was in the middle of the worst famine in our history (Great leap forward 1959-1961).

The war was triggered by the Forward Policy, which was started by India. You were the ones looking for a fight, and we gave you what you wanted.
