Chinese language now Compulsory in Sindh Province

Come on why are Pakistanis doing such bad things for?

Pakistan should concentrate on improving its literacy rates first, it is at 58.2% which is very low, and then you people are thinking about making Madarin compulsory?

My advice is, get that literacy rate up to 80%, and then debate to make it compulsory, as maths and english is more important.

well the compulsory part seems funny. when we went to the 8 standard we had a choice of dropping the third language and studying a foreign one . i took French . cant think of a time i used it after high school though.:)

French seems to impress girls for some reason so it never hurts to know enough to get your face slapped ;)

Making Chinese compulsory in Pakistan is excelent forward planning by 2020 when Bejing takes over there will be a fluent pool of people to translate.

In that case, why do we teach English in our schools. We should teach only Dari and Pashto to our children because Pakistan has a very large Afghan refugee population.

We are teaching Chinese for our children's future because China will be the next superpower and we need to communicate well with this important ally.

The same reason why U.S. is debating to teach their children Chinese for their future.

China is becoming a very important global power.

With a Changing World Comes An Urgency to Learn Chinese

If China becomes a super power it does not mean that the world will all speak in a Chinese language (Mandarin,Cantonese etc). Russia was once a super power & how many people learnt Russian? China has a few different languages, which of them would be taught? When you talk about English, French, Spanish, Arabic etc then you know it is a specific language, but when you say Chinese it can mean Mandarin, Cantonese or couple of other languages.

When someone decides to "learn Chinese" nowadays, it almost always refers to Standard Chinese, i.e. Mandarin.

I don't think it's necessary to make Chinese a compulsory subject in Sindh province. Since at that point, Pakistani children are already learning 3 languages... their local dialect, the national language (Urdu) and English.

Adding Chinese to that, seems excessive. I think Developereo answered it best in the other thread:

Given the abject performance of the Pakistani public education system, this is just a cheap political stunt.

Like when politicians keep passing tough new anti-crime laws when existing laws aren't being enforced anyway.

.
I remember how much difficult i find Sindhi to learn, i used to acheive only just pass marks, lol. I think Chinese & Sindhi language should be optional. But i also think it will benefit students alot.

BTW Chinese brothers in Karachi would be very happy as Karachi falls in Sindh province.

One question to everyone here -

has China reciprocated? How many Chinese provinces that border Pakistan have made Urdu compulsory in schools there?

We encourage our kids to learn Spanish only because they exist in large numbers in Texas. It benefits Hispanics to learn English also.

What purpose is being served here? Reading through the thread, learning one's native language is a challenge in itself!

Check the above posts buddy, apparently it is just a "political stunt" from local politicians in Sindh province.

So it seems to be more about "local" politics, rather than any kind of national policy.

This is adding too much burden on the kids education. Learning a Language that he or she might or might not use is utter waste of effort.
How many of us remember Laplace Tranforms in Mathematics, any thing learnt that does not have application in real life is a waste of time and resource. and in this case learning almost 4 languages is definetly a burden on the kids.

.
Compulsory Mandarin? seriously? Such kissing up will make even the Chinese cringe. Pakistani politicians need a crash course on making their nation self respecting and sovereign.

.
This is a great step forward. Learning as many languages as possible should be our top priority, as it helps us understand different people. China being Pakistan's ally should also teach Urdu in their schools. Understanding each other is the key to peace, and Pakistanis want Peace. I wish this step was being taken forward in Punjab, because while english is a vital language we as Pakistanis should have shame that we don't understand our neighbor's language. The neighbor will end more fruitful than anyone else.

I think this has been posted. .. and considering we keep showering the Chinese with "you are our best friends and we yours".. its about time.

.
Better make it optional at the first move. I believe that learning 4 languages would be kind of overwhelming a burden for any child and the public education system. Though China and Pakistan are close allies for decades, there seems few reasons for the local politician to mandate Mandarin in schools except what Developereo interpreted as a stunt.

.
God forbid had this been "arbi" language.........................
Anyways, it is always a good idea to be bi/tri lingual!

.
Good development...

I also feel one day CPP (communist Party of Pakistan) comes into power too...
