In that case, why do we teach English in our schools. We should teach only Dari and Pashto to our children because Pakistan has a very large Afghan refugee population.

We are teaching Chinese for our children's future because China will be the next superpower and we need to communicate well with this important ally.

The same reason why U.S. is debating to teach their children Chinese for their future.

We learn English for the same reason many people in India and Pakistan wear buttoned shirts and trousers,sometimes with a coat.It is part of the many traits and heritages we have inherited from British colonial era.Almost same goes with Urdu,which has massive Persian,Arabic and Turkish influence.

Good move by Pakistan. But the best way for Pakistan to teach their kids Chinese is by sending them there through student exchange programs at a young age. When they live they live in China for a 2-3 years & come back to Pakistan, they will be able to speak it well. Studying it Pakistan might make them understand the basics, but not speaking it fluently.

Its actually a very stupid move. Making the Chinese language compulsory puts the child under un-necessary pressure to learn an alien language system with no familiar handles.

To learn the local language , no matter how hard; is essential in order to ensure the survival of that particular language. English is truly an international language and not just limited to the west. Not to mention the relatively simpler language structure which makes it a very easy language to learn and master. Including English in any curriculum is justified whereas introducing a very complex language system such as Chinese is nothing short of injustice done to a child of that age.

We are talking about a child already handling three languages excluding Chinese. The authorities are introducing the program in grade 6; which means the child would be approximately 11-12 years old. Do you think a child of 12 ought to be subjected to all these language courses in addition to the normal subjects such as Math, Science etc? The child ought to be playing and experimenting with the world instead of being cooped up in a stuffy room pouring books indefinitely. As a child, my parents never let me study for more than 2-3 hours straight.

The chinese language system is rather hard to grasp effectively and quite alien to the south-asian languages. The necessity of using chinese outside china is actually very limited. English is understood over a wide spectrum of world population. If you go by statistics, chinese would win by sheer numbers. However, no one bothers to check the distribution of the language over the world.

There is no harm in learning Chinese but making it a compulsory language for a six grade student is a problem.The money that will be spend to hire chinese teachers and the money needed to get this programme started can be used some where else.

Imagine the time a student has to spend on Sindhi and additional time to learn Chinese. If these two subjects are made optional how much time a student will save, he can spend that time on learning science subjects or could do some extra curricular activities.

We need students who can contribute towards building this nation, I don't see how can speaking Sindhi and Chinese would help them do taht.

Terrible move. This is just a silly political stunt.

I agree Chinese is important and I would support this move if existing subjects like Urdu, English, science, geography, math, history, etc were taught properly in Pakistani schools. But just adding another compulsory subject when schools aren't performing anyway is just silly.
