BEIJING: A Chinese gang-rape survivor has pardoned three of her five alleged rapists, including the teenaged son of a military general, after they agreed to pay her compensation of 450,000 yuan (over Rs 46 lakh).

The Beijing Evening News reported this quoting the trio's lawyer. He said the three had also apologized.

The pardon has become controversial as People's Liberation Army general Li Shuangjiang 17-year-old son, Li Tiangyi, is among the three. The teenager's mother, Meng Ge, is a singer.

The agreement has raised questions whether rich-poor gap should determine punishment for crimes.

But it is subjected to judicial approval. The trial in the case concluded in August and the verdict is awaited.

Meng insisted her son was innocent and denied the defendants had apologized.

"The boys didn't plead guilty. None of them said 'I'm guilty','' Meng said.

But the lawyer, Zhao Yunheng, maintained the boys had accepted the charge and confessed.

Earlier reports suggested three of the accused had confessed to raping the girl while two others, including Li Tiangyi, had pleaded not guilty.

The local media said the three had entered into the arrangement without clarifying the stand of the remaining two.

Li Tianyi jailed for 10 years for gang rape

Updated: 2013-09-26 10:26 ( chinadaily.com.cn)

The teenage son of a famous Chinese military singer was sentenced to 10 years for rape on Thursday.

Li Tianyi, 17, raped a woman surnamed Yang in a hotel with four others after getting drunk in a bar on Feb 20, according to Beijing Haidian District People's Court.

The other four received sentences from three years with probation to 12 years in prison.

The convict's father is Li Shuangjiang, a well–known PLA artist, while his mother, Meng Ge, was also a singer with the army.

The case has captured the public's attention since February, while Meng claimed her son was innocent.

Nothing unusual in the arrangement. It is line with current Chinese religious practise, like aform of "blood money".
Something similar to the practise of "Diyat" among Muslims.

physical, sexual violence of one subject upon another subject of the state is tantamount to violence against the body of the state itself and is as such an act of open rebellion. the rapists were already sentenced today because in china rapists couldn't buy their way out of punishments for rape because no amount of money can wash away the guilt of treason and crimes against the body politic.

it was certainly not the violation of her body that the state wanted to punish, and it was certainly not up to that woman to pardon anyone (and this pardon had no effect whatsoever on the verdict and the penalties dispensed by the chinese state today). it was quite presumptuous of this woman to say anything about this matter if she thought she was at all entitled to comments and opinions just because she got raped. and now one can reasonably suspect that it was precisely this sinister, subversive attitude of hers that deemed her body as her property and abrogated the state's ultimate prerogative in disposing of her body that made her a ho** for only a ho** thinks that way. and a ho** is no less treasonous than a rapist.

this woman should share the cell with her rapists.

Li got 10 years, which is too lenient imo, they need to make an example of these type of brats. Chinese public also seem to think the other who were with Li had backgrounds that perhaps were even more powerful than Li himself, hence why Li's name was the only one that was plastered across Chinese media.

No, it does not work that way. Once the police has taken charge, it is now a public criminal matter. The victim can only refuse to testify, but she has no power to drop the charges.

Besides, this news is fake. The suspects have all been sentenced to prison as of 2 days ago, ranging from 3 to 12 years.

Li actually got a heavier sentence, considering he is only 17 years old. It was the fact that his mother kept on denying her son did anything bad in public that screwed him over. He also didn't receive the most severe sentence, as one guy was sentenced to 12 years. Now the public opinion turned against them, he couldn't get any leniency.

If Li's mother was smart, she would make him apologize in public and receive a more lenient sentence (~5 years). Then after two years, he can be released on "good behaviour", go overseas to study for a few years and change his name again. When he returns, most people wouldn't notice him. He then can do some good deeds as publicity stunts, to show himself as an example of a bad boy turning into a model citizen. It would have been entirely possible given the political climate for Chinese princelings.
