China pledges to enhance military links with Israel

China & Israel should boost their bilateral relationship, as well as inter-military links, said Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie here Monday.

While talking with Israeli Navy Commander Admiral Eliezer Marom, Liang said Sino-Israeli ties had developed smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992.

"As the two countries' political mutual trust deepens, bilateral trade links also increase," he said.

Liang said China appreciated Israel's long-term and firm adherence to the one-China policy and attached great importance to developing friendly relations with the country.

Marom said Israel and China share the same views and values on many issues. Israel would like to work with China to enhance cooperation between the two nations and the two armed forces, he added.

Israel: Intercepted Ship Had Land-To-Sea Missiles

A top Israeli naval commander says a cargo ship intercepted at sea was carrying Chinese-made land-to-sea missiles, and there is strong evidence Iran was behind the delivery.

Israel intercepted a ship on the high seas early Tuesday, saying it was carrying weapons bound for Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Brig. Gen. Rani Ben-Yehudah told reporters on Tuesday that Iran is known to possess C704 missiles, which land-based forces can use to attack ships.

He said the shipment included instruction manuals in Farsi, and that there are other clues that "explicitly" show the weapons came from Iran.

Chinese Admiral Wu Shengli meets Israeli counterpart

Chinese Admiral Wu Shengli, member of the Central Military Commission and commander of the Navy of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), met with Vice Admiral Aluf Eli Marom, the visiting commander-in-chief of the Israeli Navy, in Beijing on the afternoon of December 13.

Wu Shengli said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China & Israel, the bilateral relations had developed swiftly, as evidenced by that the inter-visits between high-level leaders of the two countries were frequent and the political mutual-trust kept deepening.

China & Israel have also carried out sound exchanges and cooperation in the military field and the two militaries have carried out effective cooperation in such fields as personnel training and equipment technology.

Wu Shengli noted that the Chinese PLA Navy is willing to further deepen the understanding, strengthen the friendship, constantly increase the inter-visits of the high-level leaders of the two navies, boost the inter-visits of naval ships of the two countries and actively carry out pragmatic exchanges in equipment technology cooperation and inter-visits of academy personnel.

Aluf Eli Marom expressed his thanks to Wu Shengli for the warm reception. He said that the Israeli side attached great importance to the relations with China.

He hoped that the two navies could deepen understanding and strengthen cooperation, so as to promote the constant development of the relations between the two navies. Aluf Eli Marom formally invited Admiral Wu to visit Israel in 2011.

After visiting Beijing, Aluf Eli Marom and his party will pay a visit to Qingdao, a costal city in east China’s Shandong Province.

China to import more high-tech products over the next five years

China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced that the country would deepen high-tech trade exchanges with developed nations and called for the easing of restrictions in exporting high-tech products and advanced equipment to China over the next five years.

China would gradually raise the percentages of high-tech products, key components and equipment in the country's imports portfolio during the 12th Five-Year-Plan Period (2011-2015), according to a statement posted on the ministry's website Thursday.

During the period, China would meet the import demand from strategically important emerging industries at home, such as information technology, energy savings, environmental protection, new energies, and high-end equipment manufacturing.

The country would also set up mechanisms for bilateral high-tech trade cooperation with 20 countries including the United States, Japan, Finland & Israel. China also aims to jointly promote trade with other countries.

The importation of such high-tech products are expected to effectively bring down the pace of China's trade surplus growth with its trade partners, the statement said.

China's trade surplus shrank year on year by more than half to 6.45 billion U.S. dollars in January this year. Meanwhile, in February the country recorded a trade deficit of 7.3 billion U.S. dollars as the Lunar New Year holiday season hindered export growth.
