Fresh evidence published jointly by The New York Times and ProPublica confirms that Beijing has been trying to keep COVID-19 information from the rest of the world since the very start of the pandemic.

On Feb. 7, Li Wenliang, the doctor who blew the whistle on COVID-19, died of the disease he’d warned the world about. While working at Wuhan Central Hospital in China’s Hubei Province, he saw a new version of the severe acute respiratory syndrome known as SARS, which also originated in China in 2002.

As news of the 34-year-old doctor’s untimely death spread and grief went viral on social media such as Weibo and WeChat — Beijing set out to bury the truth.

They ordered news websites not to issue push notifications alerting readers to [Li’s] death. They told social platforms to gradually remove his name from trending topics pages. And they activated legions of fake online commenters to flood social sites with distracting chatter,” the Times-ProPublica team reports. In all, the Hangzhou offices of Beijing’s Internet regulator, the Cyberspace Administration of China, issued more than 3,200 directives and 1,800 memos in its COVID-censorship drive — all leaked by the hacker group C.C.P. [Chinese Communist Party] Unmasked.

“At a time when digital media is deepening social divides in Western democracies,” the investigative team warns, “China is manipulating online discourse to enforce the Communist Party’s consensus.”

In January, before the coronavirus had even been definitively identified, the CCP began working overtime to mislead the world about the truth to protect the party’s image as infections began soaring — even making the disease look less severe. As a result, the world lost its best chance of preventing the global pandemic.

This is a damning expose from two left-leaning news organization. Now it’s up to left, right and center to unite in holding the CCP to account for its obscene effort to protect its own image at the huge and deadly expense to the entire world.

I keep thinking about if the world will ever end up holding China accountable for this devastation. But looking at history, even the Spanish flu which originated mostly from the US if I'm not mistaken and every pandemic since and none of the originating culprit nations were punished in any way, shape or form.

In this case, though, with how we've been so affected by this virus on such a global scale more so really than even the most recent swine flu pandemic, the losses have been nothing close to what COVID-19 has caused and I'm not even talking about anything on the mental level. Just from a purely death-count and economic cost to this virus that it is a shame they didn't come out early and warn the entire world and do the right thing instead of going the opposite direction. It just seems like from everything we read about the history of this since last February is that's what happened and not the other way around. I don't know if it would've made any favorably measurable difference? I doubt it, but a chance is all one asks. A chance for the world to prepare would've been better than getting hit in the face like we did.

The issue is not that the virus originated in China. That's acceptable- it's an act of nature you can do little to control. The issue is that they lied about it and hid it from the world for no reason other than 'image' and 'domestic politics'. We had a n outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus three years ago. We immediately declared it, shut the place down and brought it under control.

There is no such thing as COVID. It's make belief to make Trump lose election. Hell, even common cold is more severe than this figment of imagination.

That's exactly what China said to the WHO and now there's 1.75M dead across the world. You can't say it's Trump's fault they all died. As if Trump had anything to do with some victim in Botswana.

Only a very small percentage of those dead are caused by virus. CDC report only a few thousand deaths in the US were caused by virus. The deaths count is vastly exaggerated. By the same methodology, common cold kills millions in the US per year because millions die in the US after catching cold.

Wasn't Pakistan the country that didn't want to close its airport travel with China because they believed China's smokescreen story about the Coronavirus threat not being real? :agree:

The deaths include all causes. Those who died only from virus is only in the hundreds, lower than common cold.

Lol.. Nipah virus are well documented and every countries are known how to deal with it. Compare to covid-19 which don't even has its name in Jan -March 2020 is simply a joke. Did anybody tell China what is this virus and how to deal with it? In fact, it's China who teaches the world what is this virus and how to deal with it. What kind of measures shall implement to tackle it.

The very fact this covid-19 is very similar to SARS even create more confusion for Chinese in the first place. At least we are better than American who passed off covid-19 in Oct 2019 as super flu and hide all information from the west of the world until now.
