The Greeks named the region India falls under India during Alexander's time after the the river Indus. The Brits did not dream of the name.
Your history is backward...the Europeans tried to reach India thro the Atlantic and discovered Native Indians who they mistook for the Indians they wanted to find not the other way around.
There is a giant leap from Indus to India. How told you how to spell btw?
Greeks can call you what they want and it's not my business. It's Britain who made it official by inking the name you are using today.
It doesn't matter who came the first, "Indians" or "American Indians".
It does matter though that my version sounds much more attractive, doesn't it?
Again, recite it after me:
"Indians" ---> the ocean next to "Indians"---> India
