China is working to build more warship destroyers in 2015, the Want China Times reported, citing Fujian-based Quanzhou Evening News. A massive number of Type 052 destroyers, China will particularly build a Type 052C ship and seven more Type 052D ships. The Type 052C, a guided-missile destroyer, resembles the US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

China launched on Dec 22 the Jinan, one of six Type 052C destroyers meant to accompany the Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier. Apart from the Type 052C, China also has five other Type 052D destroyers, according to the PLA Navy. Known as the "Chinese Aegis," these destroyers are equipped with an "active electronically scanned array multi-function phased array radar system," Want China Times said.

The development of more Type 052 destroyers comes after China military said it will field four Type-094s and two next-generation Type-096 submarines by the year 2020. The advanced nuclear-powered attack and ballistic missile submarines, according to Focus Taiwan News, citing Russian Military Observer, can carry 80 sea-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and 250 to 300 nuclear-armed missiles.

The Type-096 submarines, the Russian Military Observer reported, can carry 24 sea-based ballistic missiles. Its estimated range reportedly extends to 11,000 kilometres.

The United States forces in Central Asia are closely monitoring China's nuclear forces, which reportedly number under 2,000 warheads. While admitting China's military technology and invention remain a far cry from that of the U.S., Want China Times said the new Type 096 Tang-class ballistic missile submarine "may become a serious threat" to the latter in the Western Pacific because of its increased capacity to carry up to 24 missile from previous 12 of the Type 094. "The new Type 096 Tang-class submarines may prove very useful against U.S. forces in the future... With an attack range of at least 11,000 km, it could conceivably attack the United States under the escort of China's surface combat fleet."

The Russian Military Observer said the ballistic missiles carried by the Type 094 submarines cannot reach the continental United States "unless fired from the Central Pacific." But these would be easily detected and countered by U.S. forces long before they attempt to surge in the waters surrounding Hawaii.

Not sure whether the Type 096 can carry 24 or 16 missiles, but the JL-3 will surely become the most powerful SLBM ever developed in the world.

China's new Type 096 Tang-class ballistic missile submarine, thought to be in development, may become a serious threat to the United States in the Western Pacific as it is estimated to be able to carry 24 missiles, according to the Russian Military Analyst based in Moscow.

The article China's Nuclear Potential published on Dec. 30 said that it will still take decades for China to establish sufficient second-strike capability. However, China has taken much less time to develop its nuclear arsenal than most Western observers had previously expected, though the People's Liberation Army Air Force still relies on H-6K bombers and Q-5 attackers for nuclear strike capability.

While Q-5 attackers have been slowly replaced by the more advanced JH-7A, China is unlikely to develop a new stealth bomber to take the H-6K's place in the near future, the article said. However, the H-6K's range had been extended from 1,800 kilometers to 3,000 km and it can now carry six CJ-10A strategic cruise missiles, which would allow the PLA Air Force to hit critical US targets in the Central Pacific.

The article also estimated that the number of China's nuclear warheads is under 2,000. However, only between 250 and 300 nuclear warheads can be transferred on road-mobile systems. At the same time, it also said that China's has less than 459 tactical nuclear warheads. China's nuclear forces are currently under close surveillance by US forces in Central Asia. Even though they do not pose a threat to the US mainland, they may still be a threat to Russia's national security.

The article further said that submarines are strategically important for the PLA. The JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missiles carried by Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines cannot reach the continental United States unless fired from the Central Pacific while Jin-class submarines would be detected and countered out by US forces if they attempted to move into the waters around Hawaii.

Until China improves the ability of its subs to withstand US anti-submarine weaponry, the PLA is unlikely to succeed in a conflict against the US. The new Type 096 Tang-class submarines may prove very useful against US forces in the future, however. The number of its ballistic missiles has increased to 24 from the Type 094's 12. With an attack range of at least 11,000 km, it could conceivably attack the United States under the escort of China's surface combat fleet.

WantChinaTimes has serious credibility issues. This is the same paper that said China only has 10 DF-31s in its last article. In the very article you posted, it said that China still relies on Q-5s for nuclear strike capability? I mean, really?

I would take everything they write with a huge truckload of salt. They are literally the worst newspaper in existence when it comes to reporting Chinese military matters.

Thomas M. Skypek, a national security analyst, stated in a 2010 paper that China over the next 10 years could build several types of strategic missile forces, ranging from a modest force of four Type 094 submarines, to a force with two Type 094s and up to eight Type 096s, each armed with 24 JL-3 missiles fitted with multiple warheads.

Strategically, it is sending its nuclear deterrent to sea aboard its new Jin-class (or Type 094) fleet ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), which will carry 12 of the new JL-2 intercontinental-range sea-launched ballistic missiles. China's follow-on SSBN, the Type 096, is estimated to carry 24 JL-2s.

Foreign media hype China in developing new nuclear submarine
2015-January-6

BEIJING, January 5 (ChinaMil) -- China is allegedly developing the new-generation 096 Tang-class strategic nuclear submarine, which is able to carry 24 submarine-launched ballistic missiles with a range no less than 11,000km, according to a report in the website of Lianhe Zaobao (United Morning Post), a Singaporean newspaper.
The report said that the nuclear submarine in service in the Chinese Navy is the second-generation 094 Jin-class nuclear submarine. Compared with the first-generation 092 Xia-class nuclear submarine, the Jin-class nuclear submarine has made huge improvement in the noise reduction system, electronic communication system, propulsion system, and weapon system, etc.

According to some foreign media, China now has at least four 094 nuclear submarines, they can carry at least 48 J L-2 missiles and about 200 nuclear warheads.. A Russian website focusing on reporting international military information said in an article released days ago that China is developing more powerful 096 Tang-class strategic nuclear submarine which can, under the escort of the fleet, effectively strike the targets in the deep rear of the enemy.

According to some Russian media, with the growth of China's economy, it may be estimated that by 2020, the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLAN) will possess at least six 094 and 096 nuclear-powered submarines. They will be able to carry 80 submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles or 250 to 300 warheads, reaching Russia's current level.

The Russian media report also said that the Chinese authorities have always kept confidential the development of strategic nuclear submarines, and have never confirmed the R&D progress of the 096 nuclear submarine.

Some American intelligence experts pointed out that the 096 nuclear submarine may also be capable of launching missiles from under ice layers in polar regions.

Some Chinese media also reported that China is actively improving its strategic nuclear forces, which are expected to stop the United States (U.S.) from attempting to resort to force to settle its disputes with China in the future.

Some military experts believe, however, that compared with the U.S. and Russia, China is still negligible in terms of its strategic nuclear strength. For example, the U.S. has developed its nuclear strength into an integration of the land-based, sea-based and air-based nuclear forces, while China currently only has the land-based and sea-based nuclear capabilities.
