China & New Zealand agree to strengthen military ties

China and New Zealand on Tuesday agreed to strengthen military ties and promote the two militaries' relations to a higher level.

The pledge came out of the meeting between Guo Boxiong, Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission and Richard Rhys Jones, head of New Zealand's Defense Force.

"China takes a consistently strategic and long-term view to developing its relationship with New Zealand, and regards New Zealand as a good partner and friend to carry out mutually-beneficial cooperation with in the Asia-Pacific region," Guo said.

"China is willing to work with New Zealand to further promote bilateral relations under the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," he added.

Guo noted the positive momentum of development between the two militaries with frequent high-level visits and broadened areas of cooperation in recent years.

He said China was satisfied with current military-to-military relations.

Jones said he hoped to further promote high-level visits between the two militaries, increase personnel exchanges, broaden areas of cooperation and continue to advance the two militaries' relationship.

Yup but as soon as we get a military we promise to strengthen ties.

I like New Zealanders. The US has abandoned you. Remember, "they're our friends, but not our allies"? Its time to find a new, free and independent foreign policy direction for New Zealand. China can help!

There is no strategic importance in having close military tie with New Zealand since they have disbanded they military forces. But then who is going to attack New Zealand? Only one that is capable but unlikely to attack the Kiwis are the Aussies.

Actually NZ did start the argument.
In 1987 Labour passed the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act. In a largely symbolic act, the United States Congress retaliated with the Broomfield Act, downgrading New Zealand's status from ally to friend.

Surprised NZ went this low, for one of the most peaceful nations in the World.

Maybe they did it, to protect themselves in the future from China?

I find your comments amusing.

NZ and the U.S haven't been allies for about 40 years now. NZ has a free and independent foreign policy direction.

The funniest part is where you said "China can help!" Their foreign policy wouldn't be free and independent if China was controlling it now would it? No, it wouldn't.

australia and newzealand they know what is good for them

Lol please. You are mistaking being friendly with neighbors and having good military ties as "eating out of a countries hand"

Maybe we could turn it around and say "China knows what is good for them"
