China must stop its poor-country pretence

World Bank ranks China as a medium income country....

The people in World Bank should take a trip to the impoverished parts of China and take a look at the conditions of living there. Even in some relative well off provinces in Guangdong and Suzhou, there are villages which are struggling for a better living. Yes we are able to pull out hundreds of millions out of dire poverty but there are also people who are lagging behind - and they are the next lot of people that we want to provide assistance to. And their size is a staggering 0.13 billion!

This is clearly a IMF propaganda, and it seems Premier Wen is buying it. We've seen how "open to competition" on the key sectors worked for Africa and South American countries. As a matter of fact, China's market open index is way higher than that of Japan, a well developed country. China is more open than other major emerging powers like India who still debates whether to allow international retailers like Walmart set foot in India.

IMF really should takes it poison to somewhere else.

Don't know wehter China a poor-country,but really a shabby('po' not 'shabi' in mandarin) country China is.

China today is rich compared to the developing countries but is poor compared to the developed countries.
In western regions and rural areas, mountainous areas, they are poor. In contrast, urban areas are very rich.
They have to feed more than 1.3 billion people.
They will have more than 200 million elderly people in 2015.
But as I said above, China is a rich country and also is a poor country, so they should behave like both. The obligation is always coupled with benefits.

Viets has a millionaire, so it's partly rich and poor?

Well, India is richer than China because it has more billionaires and multi-millionaires. :coffee:

Very reasonable comment on the rich/poor part. As to the obligations, China sure will follow it. But what the article suggests has nothing to do with that. It simply asks China to open important sectors to western capitals. No sane country is doing that, Huaiwei is not able to buy even a small company (3Com) in US.

Foreigners usually make the mistake of only visiting the big cities like Shanghai and Beijing.

The vast majority of Chinese do not live in these top-tier cities, in overall terms we are still a poor country.

People live in small town maybe poor, but the living condition there may not be bad and even better than big cities.
