China is killing it on this chart of the world's biggest metro systems

That's why they are nearly impossible in China.
The only solution may be(already done in Shanghai) is to operate some fast train on metro lines. And in suburban areas, prolong the interval and speed up.


I heard CSR has already exported metro cars to India and won a bid for Mumbai's subway trains. But do you have any plan of founding your own manufacturing? CSR&CNR have already build our own metro trains and also exported to Boston, Singapore, etc. It's a high value-added industry which stimulates a lot of relevant sectors and technological innovation.

To be honest what we really need is Chinese money & that can come in any form also the pvt company that built the Mumbai metro chose the cheapest possible coaches (not your fault) so try not to partner with those suckers

Building metro lines cannot make much profit, but cars and maintenance do.
I don't think Chinese companies will invest too much in subway construction projects in India, their way is efficiency.

Our local city government urges CSR & CNR to open local branches to manufacture our own trains, or no order from them at all. It's our strategy, call it regionalism or not, it's good for locals.

That's your choice but if the French,Koreans & Japanese can make money in all this then I can't see why you can't make some bucks

Chinese construction companies are already in India. But there are some differences between Chinese and others since China offers the biggest market of metro and intercity HSR. So their pivotal market is in China. Of course in the meantime they are in India, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

That's partly merged into the existing metro system. Due to the high-density in downtown, high density of stations are built there (station to station mostly around 1~2 km intervals), and 100% rails are built underground, it's a very dense matrix. Once it gets out of downtown, called Line Extensions (延伸线), density of stations drop, longer station intervals, and rails could be built above ground (like S-Bahn or any above-ground light rail). So it will speed up suburban commuting to the downtown metro matrix. Note that Shanghai urban planning is quite unique (resemblance to Tokyo, Hong Kong), a ultra-high-density downtown, and low-density suburbs grouped into many townships and municipal functional centers (Pudong airport, Jinshan Sea Port, Chongming preservation zone).

Then some lines are purposely built to link downtown matrix to satellite centers like airports, very few stops, high speed.

Also, HSR is playing supplementary role. HSR have both express trains that only stop at provincial capitals, and those make frequent stop-by at smaller suburban centers between the big capitals.

The problem with very big cities such as Shanghai or Beijing, the denser part of the city is as big as several cities in Germany. It takes often an hour or longer to get from the edge of the city proper to the centre, that's why we have the S-Bahn that only have stops at big junctions and travers the city within 30 minutes instead of two hours. Beijing or Shanghai only need 5 or 6 S-Bahn lines to connect all the suburbs with the city centre. At the big junctions, passengers can tranfer to the metro to get to their final destination.

All the effort and money are for Beijing and Shanghai.

The graphic is just a prove of the discrimination happened in mainland toward another regions.

The mini Guangzhou metro is the heartbreaking thing, if we see how important the city is.

You do realize, of course, that Beijing and Shanghai are provincial level entities right? Guangzhou is third behind Beijing and Shanghai, not bad for a city that is much smaller and less than half of the population.

It's not surprising. With more than 16 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, Delhi deserves one of the biggest metro systems around the world. They have ambition and they will do it.

Introduce my city, 9 million inhabitants, now we have only three lines, but we have more than five lines under construction and one new line open annually.

It will only be the seventh largest if others stop growing. But that won't be the case, would it?

No this is not the case, in 2016 we will complete phase 3 of delhi metro then total length will be more then 310 KM and in phase 4 which has deadline of 2021 Delhi metro will add another 150 KM.

So delhi metro will maintain its status for long time.

Since we have to start from somewhere, Beijing and Shanghai are the obviously choices. We have to admit though, we cannot compete with Taiwan in this aspect. Taiwan is a democracy, they make everybody happy over there, on every decision they make, 365 days a year :toast_sign:

this really has nothing to do with democracy, it's just economics. industry and population tend to conglomerate in major cities, which reduces cost and increases efficiency (economies of scale). this makes it more useful and profitable to build large metro systems in those major cities.

talking about guangzhou (and many other regional major cities), I suspect there are already plans for longer metro lines. it'll just be a matter of time.

btw, why are we discussing this stupid which-should-be-the-first topic provoked by a member from a province where the second lagest city has only 2 lines?

There are more than 37 cities are operating or planning metros. Many medium cities are constructing metro systems too! Like Xuzhou, Changzhou, Luoyang, Wuhu....

In my opinion, the future metro systems will spread from urban to rural areas, to upgrade the transportation network and help to foster integration of poor rural areas and urban areas. Good way to increase the urbanization rate.

Zhengzhou Metro has 1 lines in operating, 5 lines in construction or planning. Totally there will be 17 lines in the future, connection Zhengzhou downtown to far counties.

Rapid metro system is really become life line for big cities.
