China Getting Ready to Dominate the Indian Ocean?

Carrier Strike Group (Izumo + 2 Akizuki DDG + 1 Shirane DDG + 2 Oyashio +1 Soryu + Transports) can sail through Suez. From Eastern Mediterranean, they can launch a strike team (Japan Special Forces Group; or if they want to go brutal mode -- can send in Rikusentai Forces) into the area where the hostages are at, neutralize enemy units, retrieve the hostages.

IF we do this -- this will be a paradigm shift in Japanese Foreign Policy in the region. There's no question in ability. The question is -- Is Japan ready to deal with the consequences with an active Military Policy in this region? That's the issue that is being discussed in The Diet.

China to deploy range of naval ships in Indian Ocean | Zee News

Beijing: Riled by reports of the US sharing intelligence with India over movements of Chinese submarines in the Indian Ocean, China on Thursday said it would deploy "different kinds of naval ships" depending on requirements of operations and other nations "need not read too much into it".

Asked about reports that US is providing intelligence to India about movement of Chinese submarines in the Indian Ocean, Chinese military spokesman Col Yang Yujin told a media briefing here that China is deploying its naval fleet on escort missions in anti-piracy operations in Gulf of Aden and Somalia under UN resolution of 2008.

The reports of sharing submarine intelligence coincided with the recent visit of US President Barack Obama to India.

"I read the report you have mentioned. We have notified relevant countries about the escort missions of the Chinese PLA Navy ships including submarines," he said without specifying countries to whom Beijing provided information.

"In future, Chinese military will send different kinds of naval ships to take part in the naval escort in accordance with change of situation and the requirement of the task. These are quite normal activities and there is no need to read too much into them," he said without elaborating.

China is currently conducting the sea trials of its first aircraft carrier Liaoning amid reports that it plans to build three more.

It is not clear whether China plans to deploy the aircraft carrier too for anti-piracy operations.

To another question as to why China has to deploy submarines for anti-piracy operations in Indian Ocean aimed at targeting pirates, Yang said different vessels play a different role in such missions.

The deployment of Chinese submarines had raised concerns in India.

"It is true that China has sent naval ships to far-seas and conducted many operations including the naval escort and anti pirate missions," he said.

They also provide humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and search and rescue in international waters.

"By doing so Chinese navy is providing more international service helping with peace and stability in the open seas," he said.

The Chinese submarines caused a major diplomatic row between India and Sri Lanka last year after a nuclear submarine for the first time docked at Colombo port in November when former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was in power.

It docked at Colombo port being built with USD 1.5 billion assistance again while returning from its mission.

China defended the move saying that it is nothing unusual and it is a common practice for submarines to stop for refuelling in overseas ports.

The controversial port city project being fully funded by China has come under criticism from the present government of newly-elected President Maithripala Sirisena which said it is reviewing its environmental impact.

It is not clear whether the new Sri Lankan government would permit the docking of Chinese naval vessels at its ports in future considering its efforts to improve the island nation's relations with India.

well, you can't actually do that. (Well, you can actually) If you do that, the moment the first SF swarm open the site, they will execute the hostage, the dynamic is, they want money and they see troop, a very obvious sign that money is not coming.

If you want to rescue hostage that way then you will need some diversion

We should all view this responsibly. The PLAN has a military presence in Sudan, and will soon be an active, permanent presence in Namibia. A warm port in the Seychelles also allows refueling for them to conduct their business. The PLAN's presence in the greater IOR , Arab Gulf / Persian Gulf is a necessity to curb the threats in this region. Japan, too, has a naval base in Djibouti, Africa and the JMSDF Escort Fleet has a permanent presence in the region as well. I think that active cooperation between the Indian Navy , JMSDF, PLAN and the Pakistan Navy can lead to a more stable wider IOR.

Seize the opportunity to cooperate.

Noted. The moment they execute our second prisoner, then, they will seal Japan's foreign policy objective in this region. It wouldn't be long when JASDF, JMSDF will be launching strikes in all heavy military targets. Back home, Kyodo already conducted a poll and already over 60% of Japanese public supports an 'active' Policy by Government to handle this issue. 33% voted against, while the rest were neutral.

If the National Diet votes on deployment , this will practically remove all limits on the JSDF. This is a game changer because this will have effects on JSDF mobilization--- anywhere, everywhere.

Either way, if ISIS executes Goto, they've succeeding in doing what even pro-military politicians could not. That is the Mobilization of the Japanese Military, and have wide public support.

well, yeah and that, but tbh I didn't think that far....

was just saying this kind of operation need some kind of diversion or distraction so they won't seems strange if troop running around in the AO.

But I think the Japanese SF knew about this anyway :)

Never gonna happen.... the port in Sri lanka would be in Ashes if that happens

Come on man. Be realistic. India did not even intervene when Tamil community in Sri Lanka were targeted during the SL Civil War. Now you're saying India would launch a pre-emptive strike on Sri Lanka (and thus directly the PLAN) ? I don't think so. That would be an example of failure of strategic depth. That would result in an all out war, something that India does not need or cannot afford.

If China develops military presence in Sri Lanka, then conduct a tit for tat. Develop austere relations with some countries in ASEAN.

Tamil Community in Sri lanka are not Indians. Not preemptive strike, i was talking about incase of conflict... the port which china uses (if they choose to go Naval base) are well within different types of Indian Missiles and reach of both IN and IAF's fighters and Bombers. Like Karachi was burning for days the port which is used by chinese to act against India from Sri Lanka would be set on Flame, and tht's well justified. I hope Lankans are not that fool to give it to them

We've developed good relations with the Viets, Infact they've been asking to use one of their naval base to be operated by IN where Sri lanka would think thrice to let PLAN to use their port as naval base. But if Si Lanka chose to do so, then she'll pay a high price.... see just because Lankan ex-pm ignored our concerns, we took him off of his chair in months and now he's running here and there because of the allegations against him

Well said, reinforcement for PLA in Africa (maybe ME) is one reason why China is building up IOR facilities.

And other than strengthening anti-piracy capabilities, this ISIS hostage incident has heightened the urgency of boosting naval security in this region where China has no less interests than Japan or any other countries, e.g. maritime trading routes, energy investments. Different from other oceans, the some hardware should be tailor made for this water, e.g. SSGN, surface combatants with cruise missiles, amphib, etc., and these have high demand for facilities.

You are kidding right
1st we started the civil war when the SL govt was blackmailing us that they will allow US to have a footprint in SL & also becuz Tamils were getting killed there
2nd when we finally realized that this was heading nowhere we finally decided to put a stop to it & sent a peace keeping force there which was the primary reason for the end of Civil war

Relax bro, if tension heightens PLAN would have evacuated from the port before war breaks out to get into battle formation. On the other hand, a Pearl-harbor type pre-emptive strike is not just strategically pointless, tactically it will be impossible cos no PLAN ships will not aggregate in large amount at any single point of time.

A failure in strategic depth, mon ami. The point is, its best not to involve in national affairs of neighbors.

India should learn from its policies in the past.

LOL, of course not. Talks of "burning" certain ports.
