While their leader seems like a despot, the following piece from An Australian channel makes it seem like the world should take notice because of their rapidly growing oil discoveries (non-opec, non-Muslim as the guy in the video puts it), this country should get special attention.
Venezuela would definitely make the most logical sense of a major base if the Chinese were building one.
But back onto Equatorial Guinea; a non-Muslim majority country. That part of Africa, is probably where the new Cold War will play out. Resources and influence and infrastructure projects. A lot of these countries in the southern half of Africa, in the early 20th century embraced Christianity partial from colonial powers, but a large part due to American missionaries, so the influence runs deep, and China will have to put in a lot of work if it hopes to have greater influence then the west.
